mooney,

you seem to have a lot of knowledge on this scheme. reading back over your posts on this thread i'm guessing you got most of the way thru? or are you waiting to go out or what??

ka_pai,

Yeah I passed the selection a while ago. Im waiting to go out, hopefully in September. To be honest I think they will use the 737 sim as much as they can from now on. It was actually very good for this purpose of selecting candidates. Also everything you need is all on one big glass screen, I thought it was an excellent plane, although 45 degree turns while keeping the height right on takes a bit of getting used to. By the end of the trip though you are used to the plane and so the ILS approach and landing is the best fun. Again its all done by looking at this one glass screen, no visual reference. This was all quite strange to me considering I have only ever done UAS flying, which strictly forbids flying on instruments unless your at that stage of training!

You also get a printout at the end which shows your ILS and localiser deviation, good keepsake.

Also I was having a read over this thread and a few people were quite dubious over the finances of this scheme. But what you have to realise is that you get a type rating in this scheme as well. A self funding person will have to pay around £85k I think to get up to that level. That kind of loan from the HSBC would cost itself about £25 500. So you'll end up paying back £110 500. Plus you may have a few years waiting time to actually get a job in the first place. You will also be paying it back at a lesser rate than with CTCs bond, so you may in debt for over 15 years, this will increase the amount you have to pay back because of interest, so you will be looking at perhaps £150,000 out of your salary. That is certainly not an option for me. You may be in £110 500 worth of debt without even getting a job, nightmare! A position I know a few people to be in. Only 1/3 of people who get fATPLs in the UK get a job every year. The CTC scheme is the most cost effective and least risky way of getting an airline job. Fact.

The King air sim is no longer at Marchwood so I reckon most stage 4's for the forseeable future will be on the 737.

Rod : It is all IFR in the sense that you're using the instruments as reference rather than visual (but you're certainly not doing NDB holds or anything).

Rod,

Thanks for the reply,

Looking forward to the challenge.
Confirmed what I thought the sim check would be.

I think this and the getting job thing is the biggest worry for me, especially if the candidate is not matched to an airline during training, at present only something like 42 out of the 72 candidates per year are matched. Although they will be put in a pool of trained pilots on the ATP scheme at the end of training, to go into that amount of debt with no clear route to a job despite CTC promising they'll do everything they can to get a job is still slightly worrying. It will be interesting to see how the non matched pilots fare when it comes to getting a job at the end of training.

There is clearly a risk but it is exactly the same risk taken by self funded Oxford, BAE Student.

When you add the interest, debt is very similar.

Difference is CTC gives you a high chance of a job and also covers the type rating within that similar self funded cost.

That's the way I see it.

So, where else is everyone regarding selection? I faxed back my 4 questions a week ago today and am still waiting to hear if I was succesful. The last few posts have all been from people talking bout the later stages. Anyone else where I am? How long should I wait until I post/re-fax my questions?

Unz

btw, It's been really useful reading up on what people've been doing. Keep up the posts and let us all know how your doing!

big g,

the ATP scheme has been running for ages (10yrs i think) and they've never failed to place someone. theres a chance you might have to wait a few months - not a big deal.

you may find it "slightly worrying" but it's the best u can get. no sponsorship has ever promised a job

that's interesting to hear, does anyone know what airlines use the ATP? or better still is there someone who's been through the ATP scheme?

Still i think i'd be a bit more reassured if i was placed with easyjet/thomas cook before training starts.

Unzie_2000,

I recently marginally failed at stage 3, but have been invited to resit stage 3 in 6 months, so hopefully with a bit of luck in the resit and stage 4 i'll be going to NZ next year

Well I had my stage 3 yesterday (1st July) and join the list of many that were unfortunate enough to not meet CTC's high standards. I would like to say to all potential candidates that they are an extremely kind and professional bunch and really do try to calm you down and make you feel welcome, but unfortunately I feel my nerves still got the better of me!

It is a shame however that they feel they cannot give us feedback on our pitfalls as this could be extremely useful in personal development and if such a situation should arise again.

I would like to wish both the guys that got through (sorry your names have slipped my mind!!!) the best of luck in the future and if you read this, let us know how the simulator went. Also James, I noticed you were taken off individually, I do hope it was all good news and you will be joining the other two!!

To the rest of you, all the best in whatever you do, I wouldn’t have minded learning to fly with any of you. Remember, it’s not the end of the road yet!!!!

Regards

Mark

It was a day after, not sure if this has changed. Think you are now notified by e-mail.

Anyone here have Stage 2 selection on the 20th July?

Hey, newie here!

I've got stage 2 coming up soon.

Has anyone got any info on what the tests are like - there are some suggestions in earlier posts that it is just basic mental arithmetic - is that true or will be there be more mechanics based stuff?

The group exercise seems pretty basic - just a presentation and discussion... are their set topics to choose from or do you get to choose? Do you choose in a group or as an individual?

Any hints appreciated guys!!

Regards

Thumbs down

Peter 340....

I hope you're on the wind-up mate, I really really do....

(At least it looks like you wont be inconveniencing yourself with having to arrange transport and accomodation for Stages 3 and 4)

PS - NZ's lovely. You might get here on holiday one day....

Peter 340

i think you're probably a little under-qualified.

my advice to you is get yourself down to night-school for at least 3 more grade A 'A' levels - i'm sure a man of your ability can polish those off by the 20th.

as for the sim, a day in a 737?? i recommend a full week in a full motion 744 sim. i'm sure daddy could organise that for you.

Best of luck
