I don't know if it's possible to get work experience on board or in ATC, but why not go down to your local flying school and apply for a placement. You might get some hours in the air out of it.
When I did work experience I went to an engineers office. Apart from the free cakes and biscuits, those are two weeks of my life I'll never get back!

Like your style mate, getting in young and looking for it yourself is all a good sign of enthusiasm and the big boys like that. Try all the flying schools at Barton aerodrome (it aint that far from you) eg, ravenair, lancashire aero club and pester them for any job for a few week. even if its cleaning the mud off the tyres from that grass runway it may earn you a trip up if they've nothing on.
Whatever it is hope its better than my work experience , shovelling sh*t at the local dog kennel
Good luck anyhow

I did my work experience at Gatwick in 1996, refuelling a/c. It was one of the best experience's I've had at an airport (must be the smell of fuel hehe!).
It was so good, I was allowed to go back about 3 separate times later after the inital work experience week (including some night work!).
Seeing fuel cap's frozen to the apron and unable to loosen, by the use of a cro-bar just added to the experience! (expect the unexpected!).
Hope you have a good one what ever you choose to do. I would personally prefer to be more "involved" with THE a/c than going into an ATC Centre, but everyone has different tastes.

Hey I am 15 and doing mine next year I applied to 6 differnt irish airlines looking for anything I only got 1 reply saying due to security reasons they couldnt take me.I have also asked my flying school and they say they would see if they could take me. Flying schools are the best option I think.

If you fancy something fast and pointy then the RAF used to (possibly still do) a work experience programme involving accommodation. I spent my work experience around Tornados.
If you're a member of the ATC then your local ACLO will be able to help via your sqn boss.

As far as i know there's not much round the congleton area so its Barton or theres a few at Mcr airport ( JD aviation for instance) . If you aint bothered bout travelling on the train Blackpool or liverpool are on the lines from manchester.
If i was you i'd sign up for the RAF now, i regret not doing and i bet a few other prowlers on this website do too. After all carrying 200lbs of missles must be better than carrying 200 scoucers to tenerife
good luck man

help needed,manchester or leeds bradford
hi,
I am an aspiring pilot. Due to the holidays i was hoping that i could do a voluntary role at a local airport. (either manchester or leeds/ bradford airport) as this would give me a further insight to the industry and will be beneficial to me, Quite possibly with air traffic control or operations. Can anyone please give me some information on how to go about this.
thanks

Criminal Record Checks (CRCs) are carried out by Disclosure Scotland when you apply for an airside post with an airport company, and are required for the issue of an airside pass. You do the applying at your employer's request. You can get your own CRC done for about £13, but it is only valid for a limited time, and is probably not worthwhile. It takes a couple of weeks to come through.

i realise this is slightly hi-jacking a school work experience thread, but i'm considering moving into an airline related job for a while before applying to CTC etc to try and get some experience of the industry, bit of broader knowledge etc. i currrently work in admin at a university but am up for getting my hands dirty if i'm offered the chance. however, i would need to earn a liveable wage.
i've been looking on airline websites for current opportunities but am not actually sure what goes on 'behind the scenes' at airports so don't know what positions would be open to me, or which would provide the most valuable experience. can anyone offer me any pointers?
and, while i'm at it, do people think this type of move is a sensible idea, or would i be better off gaining as many 'transferrable skills' in the job i'm in at the moment and getting a reasonable paypacket to save up for my training?
many thanks

hey girlfriday
you seem to be going about it the right way if your looking to get into ctc, they love that enthusiasm and going a step further than the others so it will definantly stand you in good stead. But if your thinking of the modular route into this wicked industry that were all trying to jump into i'd say opt for a better payed job and learn whilsyt ya earn . once licensed get a job with the airlines and get a hold of contacts such as training pilots if poss , if not anyone who could drop you a recommendment will help .
I aint no expert but hope that helps
Good luck BP

Friday,
A couple of mates came into as handling agents as well. They seem unanimous in their support of that route as a good way of making contacts and getting an understanding of what happens airside.

thanks guys!
guess it's definitely worth looking into. i guess if i go for an airline job, apply for CTC and don't make it then i can always fall back on the type of work i'm doing now. at least i'll have had a taste of what i'm looking to get into!
SmilingKnifed - any ideas who your friends worked as handling agents for, or where?
thanks again for the advice

Work experience
This has brought back a few good memories
In 1996 I did my first stint of work experience with an Air Taxi operation based at Newtownards in Northern Ireland. There was absolutely no flying done, I think I ended up washing their Aztec, replacing Aerad plates and reading through their AOC!! I think that it got to point where I ended up bringing my school notes in to revise for my GCSEs!
I did a second stint in 1997 at BHD with Flybe (then Jersey European) and must admitt, enjoyed it thorougly! I was out on the ramp, in ops, went on flight decks with their dispatcher, got up in the tower. Had a ball!
