Work Experience/placement?

hello everyone...

im at university at the moment studying an aviation related degree (more towards the commercial aspect of aviation rather than engineering). I really want to work in the aviation field after I graduate hopefully, but for the moment, I want to get some work experience preferably over the summer holidays.

Can someone please help me?!!

and does anyone know where I can find out the job vacancies for emirates in london? I was told they advertise in skyport magazine, but on the internet it does not seem to have anything?!!

I did my work experience at British Airways Eng at Linate international, Milan. And worked at Airbus Filton for 1 week in Feb 2006.

This is useful

Brings back memories for sure!

I went to Air UK in 1994 at 15 for my work experience, was great fun, went on some jump seat rides, worked airside, in ops etc, fantastic.

In 2002 at 23 went back as an F/O on the F50, well worth writing some letters to airlines to ask!

My work experience

Hey guys, I had posted last year about an idea of having work experience at my local airport so I thought I might tell everyone about how I got on.
Well...I have just finished my four day work experience at George Best Belfast City Airport and I can definitely say it was a great experience.
Everyone was very friendly who I met and spent time with.
I was round most of the departments/areas in the airport and enjoyed them all.
Personally however I enjoyed despatch the best myself, the workers there were very helpful and friendly and were very enthusiastic to help me with my problems and questions.
When at despatch I was able to board a few planes and ask the pilots there some of my many questions. Those 20mins in my four days there was more than I ever thought I would get.
I would definitely recommend work experience at an airport to anyone who has an idea that aviation would be there chosen career as it has defiantly given me more of an insight into the work of an airport and the jobs each department faces on a day to day basis.
Having looked at my timetable for the four days, that was made up for me, despatch didn’t seem that interesting at all, but it proved to be my most enjoying and interesting, as I had thought atc would of been more myself.
I am now considering this as a back up option if I never make it as a pilot.
If anyone has any questions or would like to know what all I was "timetabled" for my stay free to ask.
The four days was definetly worth it.
Back to school.............

Hi, I am 15 years old and currently looking for 1 weeks work experience. I am extremely intrested in aviation and have ambitions of being a pilot. The work experience will be in a few months time, and having read this topic, I feel i may be too late to apply for the work experience i want.
Idealy, I would like to either be working amongst the pilots or the ATC, but i realise recent security issues may be preventing this from being possible. An airside job would still be of interest to me, but as more of a 'fall back' option.
I did here that FlyBE are (or were) doing work experience in Exeter, this is some distance from my location (6 hour drive), but as this is a matter of future career importance, I would be willing to stay somewhere in Devon for the duration of the week. Does anyone know anyomre about this?

Regards,

Dan.

Having spent a magnificent week's work experience last summer at RAF St Mawgan with ATC, I highly recommend to anyone looking for aviation-related work experience that thay give the RAF a thought.

Over the course of the week, I got to help (or hinder, I suppose) the assistant controllers, to sit in a Tuccano trainer, to fly the Sea King simulator they've got there, and to stand on a rather flimsy platform whilst leaning over the cockpit of a Typhoon (whose squadron just so happened to be based there for the week). These and countless other events culminated in one of the best weeks I've ever had.

When I compare watching Europe's most advanced fighter (I'm not French) rocket up into the sky from the vantage point of the control tower, to the coffee making and spreadsheet filling of my classmates, it brings a very BIG smile to my face.

Maybe I was just amazingly lucky. Definitly in fact.

But I would say give it a try.

Question Summer Work Placements

Hi, I'm a nineteen year old first year Avionic Systems Engineering student at Bristol University. I'm looking for some work placement over the summer. Can anyone recommend anywhere? Preferably local as I will be securing accomodation here from the first of July. Anyone have any experiences with any companies that may be relevant?

Thanks, Huw

Lots of aerospace industry in and around Bristol. Not sure if you're talking specifically flying work as the closest experience you could hope to get would be some operations type work at a flying school, say Aeros at Filton etc.

Engineering wise, you've got Rolls-Royce in Filton - I recently spent 6 months there, and it looks very good on the CV. Not sure if they take summer only placements though. Your Uni should have a person to contact about such things. Also you have Airbus and Cameron Balloons. There's also probably a lot of smaller aerospace companies supporting the big ones.

Good luck!

I did my work experience at Airbus, Filton: I spent the first couple of days photocopying papers and making cups of tea-really interesting stuff(!) But it was great going on lunch breaks, being very close to different types of airbus aircraft. I spent a few days drilling holes in A330/340 wings, which was quite good fun. I would recommend Airbus for work experience-I now fly from Filton for my PPL, so it's nice to have seen it from both perspectives!

I have E-mailed about 30 airlines and airports around the country, and the best reply i got said "We will arrange a week for you based in flight operations, but also spending time in other departments".

May I ask, what does flight ops do?
I don't want to stay on the other side of the country just to answer phones and make coffee.

Smile Summer Work/Placement

Hi,

I'm a student at Loughborough University currently studying Aeronautical Engineering. I am in my second year, and have recently been considering finding a summer placement/job/work experience in the aerospace field for this Summer (2007). I am aware that Rolls Royce Plc offer summer placements, but does anyone have any information regarding any kind of aviation work, preferably in my region (East Midlands) for a period of 1-3months?

Thanks in advance,

Keeley

Ok, I've given up on looking for this sort of work experience, the deadline is in a weeks time and I've been offered a placement by my (rich) uncle's workplace in the city. It's the best option I've got, but I will give you all the information I know so that you guys don't suffer the same fate as me.

Flybe: Offer Work Experience, I sent a letter to personell, took over a week to reply, but they were fully booked on the week conserned.

MyTravel: Sent an E-Mail to them, took about a week to reply, sent another week confirming dates and info only to find out they were fully booked aswell. (That was a harsh blow).

London City Airport: Offered me a place if I was 16 or over. Unfotunately I'm 15 and still will be during my Work Experience week.

East Midlands Airport: Offer Work Experience but were fully booked.

I also e-mailed around 30 other airlines and airports, with almost all of them not replying (It angers me to think they don't care). BAA said on their website that they offered Work EXperience, but did not reply to my e-mail, EasyJet's enquiry form didn't work, so you get the picture. My advice is to contact as many airports and airlines as possible (including the ones mentioned above) and don't be downheartened if you don't get many replies. Also remember to contact them at least 6 moths in advance.

Hope this helps,

Dan.

I think the biggest problem you have had here is how you have contacted airlines & ground companies. Sending emails and letters is good, but sometimes a good old fashioned phone call will be better, airlines are sent hundreds of emails every day to common addresses, and I have seen the HR folks simply deleting emails they don't recognise. Pick up the phone, you may be in for a surprise!

Work Experience

I wouldnt worry too much about getting work experience, i mean its real easy to get and most places will let you if you beg enough. Getting a real job is sooo much harder LOL.

If its usefull, i did Aero related work experience with the following:

Agusta Westland
Finnair
British Airways
Air Botnia (now Fin 1)

none of them were crappy 'make the coffee' or customer service crap. All nitty gritty directly related to aircraft - even getting to touch them and play with them

So if u are unsure of who to go for, the above definately take students!!

Keeley, you are a girl, its easy for you to get anything!! bae systems and Quinetiq also do summer placements i think!! Are you on MEng or BEng cos it might be worth getting some ideas for placements for next year.

BTW, i know u u used to be in my class till last year :P As for me, i got a crazy plan of getting an internship after i graduate! (good luck to me :S) and applying to CTC. I hard quite a few lboro students get into it, so im banking on that :P

Internship

Hey all, I just wanted to know if an internship not linked to aviation such as management, with a major airline, would help you in the future to get a job with them as a pilot.
Thank you!

try Aurigny air services, Servisair or Aviation Beauport. All of those have either ramp or check in jobs in the summer. Also the flying club may have work behind the ops desk.

Go and get contacts yourself!! This spoon-feeding nonsense has got to stop! Phone up BAA, ask for the airfield operations manager and take it from there. You're not going to find a job in the future by asking others to share their own..!

Please tell me that "Nadhirah" is a troll - if that's the future of the aviation industry, may god help us all.

I agree, do the donkey work yourself, we all had to. And try to spell Heathrow correctly when you apply, it usually helps.

You're too kind.

I'd say: 'Try to spell when you apply, it usually helps.'
