I have to work bloody hard for the few dollars that I get....and there aint a huge amount of em let me tell you....so I strongly resent having taxes being spent on failed business ventures that have little or nothing to do with me. Ansett didnt kick in for my CPL and wouldnt employ me unless I had spent considerable funds and time on training ect, so why should I have to kick in for their stuff ups.
I bet the government wont kick in if my business goes toes up......or any others either unless they get some political miles out of it. Now dont get me wrong I feel simpathy for all involved, but shouldnt staff taken out some sort of insurance against this sort of thing happening?, and isnt the employer obligated to let on to employees that they may be having to look for some other employment shortly, thus enabling them to have a plan if things go turtle?
why is it that if a big dollar corperation goes turtle, that I, one that recieved no benefit whatsoever from said corperation should have to spend my hard earned bucks to rectify mistakes made by idiots that made huge sums of dollars?, more than I would have made in my life time.

Levy... this has to be the new catch word for the government.

I would much prefer the government to start using the word Tax, as this is exactly what it is. Come on Mr Howard, tell the Australian Public that you would consider adding a Tax to airfares, see just how well that would go down.

Just mulling it over in my mind, I counted the number of different taxes that are paid to the government within each and every airfare that we buy.

Off the top of my head I counted no fewer than twelve government taxes.

Now they want to add another. How can the industry survive under the weight of that much burochracy?

I thought the government wanted to streamline tax, not make it worse.

To make things worse, just putting a tax on air tickets makes a vast minority of people pay for Ansett. It is uncontionable to select a group of society to exude taxes from and exempt others. If the government wants to bail out unfortunate workers, and then have people who had nothing to do with it pay for it, then they should have everyone pay for it equally, rather than discriminating against air travellers.

prunehead,

I did read you post before I replied. Your comments angered me because even though you DID mention the ANZ board, you choose to belittle our country’s leader rather than those at fault.

If anyone is to be dealt with by Woomera, I think it should be you for writing such rubbish. I think 6 worthwhile post counts for more than 350+ of rubbish.

-80,

You are a slow learner my friend. If you cannot have an enlightened debalte without resorting to personal taunts then this isn't the place for you.

Answering your question, you quite obviously DID NOT read the post. It is John Howard who is suggesting that a ten dollar tax per ticket is applied to air travellers. I do not suggest that anyone else is responsible for that ludicrous suggestion.

I further went on to lay the blame for Ansett on everybody BUT John Howard, and indeed I listed the governments LAST on my heirachy of blame in my original post.

Do they have schools where you come from? Learn to read, and there after learn to comprehend.

I have to admit that I don't share your almost religious respect for politicians, but I do not expect you to try to force your sheap like ideals upon me.

Regards,

PrUnIe

I would just like to ask all who are ranting about the 'levy' or 'tax' or whatever it may or may not be called - are anyone of you facing loss of your home from being a now ex- employee of Ansett? Are any of you out of a job with no news as to whether one will get even the last 2 weeks pay? At least the government is trying to help. And yes I am an AN employee (or was I suppose) and I am grateful for anything that means at least some money coming my way to delay the inevitable. If they can pay millions to keep illegal immigrants why not to help Australians who had no choice to be out of work whereas the ' immigrant's ' chose to leave their homes. Whereas I am not sure whether a levy on future airfares is the way to do it, I will be grateful. At least the taxpayers money is going to help fellow australians.

What's $10 these days - a packet of cigarettes? A couple of beers?

Fox Fire,

I sympathise with you at this very, very bad time, but when I was looking down the same barrel as you in April, the government never came to my assistence, and I didn't see why they should have, with the exception that the company that I worked for was wholly Australian owned. Let me tell you, I need that ten dollars just as badly as you do. Hang on, what next, will people be suggesting that we pay 100 percent of our income to the government? We already pay well in excess of sixty percent. (working on top marginal rate + medicare levy + GST +++). When is enough enough?

Quick question dude, your quotation about the fleas from a thousand cammels, does it come from a Commodore 64 game Revenge of the mutant cammels written by Geoff Minter??

Question

Well this is my second post so I will make it brief. I worked for ZL, so the $10.00 would help me, but what everyone is forgetting is that this shutdown is not only hurting the 16000 AN employees , there are thousands of other people that are loosing their jobs as a result of this situation. What the government needs to do is to legislate that these so called directors are and will be made accountable for their stuff ups. Take for example Toomey, he resigned from the AN boards on the 24th August. He knew that the company was going down, and he tried to sidestep his responibility. If the government could introduce water tight legislation we wouldnt have these problems in the first place.

Pprunehead - quote not from the Commodore game - dunno where I got it from but it works for me

And Struggler - I couldn't agree more that people must be made accountable but here we have NZ board members giving themselves fat bonuses and patting themselves on the back for casting AN adrift to save themselves - doesn't look like they are worried about accountability.

I still go along with what I said earlier on but I also agree with those that say that Air NZ has to pay.
Fare enough they payed too much money for a stripped airline but they stripped it even further and offloaded as much debt as they could on it to a stage where it had no chance of braking even let alone a profit.
This I am certain was an attempt to save themselves.
But I also have to add that the NZ government is giving some funds to Air NZ. What is our government doing.
I agree with Ovation that we will have to pay but I hope we are wrong and ANZ payes.
Also just one further comment: This is an aviation forum not a political one so let's try and keep our personal political views out.As to the above I will try also. :o :o

Guys,

Nobody disagrees that ANZ was incredibly naive and inept when it shafted SQ to get the second 50% of AN, but do you really believe that everything fell over in the last 12 months.

AN has been on life support for a verrrry long time. Blame Murdoch, Abeles, Hawke and Kelty. Study history, talk to old employees about Sir Reg and get a feel for what the modern day MBA has done for aviation.

Stop being RACIST. This is about individuals who ****ed up, not about countries.

Sure, Australia is disadvantaged by 60,000 unemployed aviation workers, but hopefully many will get a job soon.

And i don't think it's worth the other 19,004,000 Australians to go to war over.

Learn from what happened, and get upset with the morons that allowed it to happen. Maybe some of the 16,000 AN employees knew that their company wasn't managed well. Why petition the government now, after the airline is closed.

It seems to me John Howard could win himself a sh-one-tee load of votes come December if he impounded a couple of ANZ aircraft next time they alight on Oz shores and held them until all staff benefits were paid. (Please, Mr Howard, don’t impose another bloody tax and have the hapless Oz taxpayer bail these ‘foreign devils’ out of their obligations.)

And if the Kiwis retaliate and ban Oz aircraft from NZ skies? Seems to me the only person who’d find that a problem would be the lady who signs the dole cheques at the Bondi CES – her job might be at risk if there were no more Kiwis coming our way.

If Australia – and that means John Howard in this case – allows ANZ to get away with what appears to have been blatant debt transfer and asset stripping of AN over the last few months, (I know, only following the grand tradition of its previous owners since 1979), we’ve lost all credibility. That’s if we’ve had any since 1972 when Goof debased Australian citizenship by giving it away to anyone five minutes after they arrived in the country who looked like they might vote Labor.

Couldn't go to proper war balthazar - we would have to bomb Bondi.

I do however believe cutting Trans Tasman links until the NZ Government take ownership of this mess will have a positive effect.

ANZAC Now stands for Air New Zealand Acting Criminally.

The effects of shutting Trans Tasman air corridors would put those in the land of the Wrong White Crowd in the same position as tens of thousands of Australian air travellers and employees/suppliers of AN now find themselves.

If that is Kiwi bashing - bite me!

Before we dump Johny,
consider the last two weeks.
1) What do I do with these boat people on the TAMPA?

2) Will I commit Australian troops if required to WAR? Whilst under considerable stress. Only a short distance from the attack itself.

3) Will I use tax payers money to prop up a foriegn company that is destined to sink anyway.

I believe he has made three very good decisions.

Just take a moment to consider that fat blubbering idiot Beasley, and what he may have done, and who we should relect at the end of the year.

Yes airbrake

I have just watched a considerably moved and exhausted John Howard on 60 Minutes.

He has gained a considerable amount of respect from me for:

A/: Stopping us from being the worlds dumping ground.

B/: Enacting ANZUS in its written context.

C/: Refusing to bail out a New Zealand compainies total ineptitude.

On the latter - he did say if you do it for one - where do you stop.

Australia will become the second Fiji if we are not careful - and at the mercy of an ethnic majority.

We have all seen what great things that has done for Fiji.
