Seconds
I was listening to the radio yesterday and one of the hosts tald a story about flying coast to coast here in the US. He was in first class, hadn't had breakfast and so was very hungry. The first class cabin was half full and after meal service, he asked if he could have another meal, or seconds The flight attendant got quite prissy and said "But you've already eaten", he explained he was still hungry and if there were any spare meals could he have one. The attendant stormed off and brought him the meal.
Which leads to my question(s).
1. Are unserved meals just thrown away at the end of the flight - or what?
2. If someone asks for seconds and there are spare meals are there any SOPs that disallows serving them to those that ask?
3. What would/should the attitude of the FA have been?
many thanks
Ozzy

This Again depends on air line proceedures.however usualy if there are meals still left after all pax have been served,of course the seconds and the thirds may be offered if requested.
A flight attendant could also go that extra mile by offering first class and buisness class meals (according to air line proceedures) presented with minimum first/buisness equipment involved,to avoid "difference" in the cabin where pax is seated.
And the attitude of a F/A should not be,to say to the pax.."you have already eaten"...but to offer alternatives! if all mentioned above failes, you could still find fruit, cheese, crackers plentiful onboard a proper service oriented air craft/air line.

I'd agree with the US airlines being stingy (and just plain rude)!!! On a flight from Boston to Denver (via Milwaukee so you can probably guess the Mom and Pop airline) we were given the choice of zucchini bread or a ham, egg and cheese croissant. I go for the latter and my friend asks 'What does the zucchini bread look like?'. Answer 'Like zucchini bread'. So my friend opts for that (regardless of lask of info!) and it's this teeny tiny little thing whereas I'm sitting there with the biggest breakfast sandwich in history. So before the attendant hands it over my friend asks if she can change her mind. 'No Maam, once I've handed it out I can't take it back'. We split my breakfast in the end. Ho hum. On the plus side it WAS $100 cheaper than the competition AND they gave us warm cookies.

All are spare meals get thrown out at the end of the flight or the rampies get some extra meals.
I always offer any leftover meals to pax and any peanuts cheese and bickies or timtams that are left over offer them to the pax that are having coffee tea or any type of drink.
Seems like such a waste to have them just sitting in the galley or throwing them out.

seconds/catering
Perhaps someone from flight catering might be able to explain some things....
1) In Australia ALL food is completely disposed of and is airline property until the waste removal trucks come and take it away then it becomes their property.
The only exception is the unopened bottles of alcohol which get used again.
2) First class should be very well stocked so there should be plenty of food for seconds.
3) Alot of pax dont eat their meals so there is alot of food onboard. Airlines try to make sure of this!

Leftovers
[COLOR=blue]I used to give seconds (if asked nicely) but stoped after that huge argument happened once: We had a few meals left, so someone asked me if I could give an extra meal to him and his friends. Being a nice hostie I did. Going back with only one left over meal back to galley I was asked for more from woman who witnessed me giving extra meals to those guys. She wanted three meals for her family. I said I had only one left. You can imagine what happened next, can't you? "How come those guys got their extra meal and we didn't??? ", and so on...
Nobody gets any extra meals from me now!
A few of you have said you give out peanuts? Do you still have them on board? I haven't seen peanuts on board of any aircraft for last *God knows how many* years! Peanut allergy is a very big risk.
And about taking stuff off the AC or giving it to anybody like baggage handlers or ground staff - forget about it - in our airline you could get into serious trouble for doing it! We are not allowed to take anything, not a pax left magazine, not a left over chocolate bar - NOTHING.

Is it any wonder that US based airlines are going bust! That certainly isnt the way to treat your First Class passengers.
Not sure how much truth there is in this, but i was told that Aer Lingus sends their left over meals to the Dublin Zoo!
Mutt.

About five years ago I operated a freighter from JFK to Chicago and then had to pax back to JFK, in uniform, on UA.
The aircraft was a B757 with 14 first class seats and my company had paid full fare, about US$975. I was sat in the last row next to the window. The choice was chicken or beef, when they arrived at me the very 'senior' FA leaned over and said, "And you, sir, will have the beef", no said I, on a rather strict diet at the time, I would like the chicken please. "Sorry we don't have any more".
I declined the beef and settled for a coffee. I mentioned to my seat neighbour, who had expressed dismay at the lack of meal choice, that given that the cabin on that day, being full, had grossed over US$13,000, one would have thought they might have managed to find a chicken meal somewhere, from EY, for example. My seat neighbour then went to the loo and when he returned said that he had heard the cabin crew contemplating whether to report me or not!!! Some first class service UA offered!

Agree with you SWEETY
Many of my pax are tour groups and we are constantly asked for seconds, especially by the tour leader who is trying to satisfy his/her group. So many times I have been asked for 10 or more extra meals. I think hey honey, do you think I have a larder full of ingredients out back and can just whip up a buffet?? Right!!
I have been in the same situation as "Sweety" and the accusation of favouritism always comes back to me. Personally if there are meals left over then it's first in first served. If I am operating galley I like to keep a couple of extras for the crew but besides that I dont mind giving out seconds. I feel for the tour leaders really because if the airline doesn't feed their passengers well or something goes wrong, it's the tour leaders who face the brunt of it. Thats why people travel in tour groups, they have an identifiable "leader" to take responsibility. Over time you see the same tour leaders over and over and I like to make sure their group is well looked after otherwise this poor chap or lady is going to have a hard time for "their" tour of duty.
One thing I WONT do though, is serve something that has been stewing in the oven for more than an hour. Thats just not humane. For some reason airline food doesn't take to "resting". I've seen pasta that comes off in one whole piece instead of strands. Not nice!!
