looks like the round the world shopping spree is coming to a end
Is it possible for the cc to offer the company a better offer to protect what youve got (destinations).. ie.. similar conditions to what they are offering london based cc?

I don't see why we should offer concesions to the company when they are making record profits and the directors are paying themselves huge bonuses.
We've already had our pay frozen for the past few years and agreed to less crew on board, meaning working harder. Unfortuntely the cost of living hasn't been frozen!

I've already written to Mr. Latham and he has expressed concerns about the London base as upto 1000 Australian jobs will be going overseas.
I just hope he gets into power in the next election. We need a change, the Howard government has put this country back years.

Brisbane Base?
Apart from the London base what's the news on the Brisbane base?
"The airline will also establish a base for another 250 international flight attendants in Brisbane from early 2005."
Are there enough QF FAs to staff it/willing to transfer? And if they don't have enough won't QF offer the positions to the fixed termers? Saves having to do another recruitment drive for this base.

vdd, I would imagine they would get the BNE base numbers from existing crew. There are easily enough commuters to fill the 250 slots.
I would imagine once the numbers are finalised they will action the base transfers for existing crew then fill the positions left in Sydney, Melbourne, Perth with fixed term crew.
IF the London base opens they will have too many crew in Australia so QF will then say bye to the fixed term crew and then offer VR packages to permanent crew.
As a current long haul f/a I will be going on strike to protect my job and those of other Australian's. Fingers x'ed the London base will not go ahead and the fixed term and casual crews will be made permanent.

keep an eye on the above date as qf is going to record a record profit. also look out for the increase in bonuses and directors fees. as the faaa pointed out contact your local member of parliament and point pout the current stiuation .i suggest we all contact EVERY MEMBER of federal and state parliament with details of the current situation. go to each governments website and you can download all email addressess. imagine 2000 f/a's spend one day of thier time emailing all memebers of federal and state parliament. surely would have the tongues going. now lets get of our butts and lets do it after august 20th.

Industrial relations and workers rights have gone backwards. Under Howard, Costello, Abbott etc 40% of all new jobs created are casual or temporary. No other country in the world has allowed this to happen. This is not enough for Qantas, now more jobs have to go offshore.

As much as I hate to say it - generally politicians regardless of political persuasion don't give a monkey's.
Unless you get a good majority of the general public's support they won't do a whole lot to help (and only then because it could become a political issue and therefore of use to them).
Qantas is a public company and Government's try to stay out of their affairs unless a particular action (or potential action) contravenes legislation.
However, I do think its a worthwhile exercise to let your local member know what is happening.

BNE BASE
Don't be surprised if the BNE basing doesn't go ahead.Apparently numbers on the BNE/LAX sector are looking decidedly rubbery.Probably why applications for the base are not yet available.Cost savings are also not as substantial as the bean counters would like.Don't sell the house in Sydney yet!

BNE Base
according to the "senior managment" they are happy with the bne-lax figures and looking into going daily sometime next year. if we had some aircrafts we could do it earlier. the second flight through syd -akl-lax-akl-syd qf 155/156 is always very light. only used it to keep a landing slot.

BNE BASE
Bunkmaster,
I guess it all depends on which "senior management"you talk to.Why then aren't applications for the BNE base available now?Applications were supposed to be available a month ago.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Thought you might like to advise the crew that it does
work to write to their local member of parliament. I
received this response today, and with this, we can all
only hope for the best.
So glad to be apart of your social club too, thank you.
Response from a member of parliament:
Dear Ms R....(name omitted to protect privacy of writer),
Thank you for your letter regarding Labor's position on Qantas's plans to relocate jobs to London.
I have spoken to the office of the Shadow Minister for Transport, Martin Ferguson, as well as Labor backbencher Tanya Plibersek, who raised this issue in Parliament in July.
Whilst Qantas has undertaken that no Australian crew will be made redundant as a result of establishing the London base, Labor does not support the export of Australian jobs nor the casualisation of eth Australian workforce in any way. Qantas is one of Australia's largest employers, an Australian icon built by Australian taxpayers and a key ambassador for Australia to the world.
Mr Ferguson's office is in direct contact with Qantas regarding the concerns of Qantas' work force, and the Labor party will continue to raise these concerns. We are concerned about any action which brings Qantas' performance as a corporate citizen into question.
Thank you for bringing your concerns to my attention.
Yours sincerely,
Lindsay Tanner MP
Federal Member for Melbourne
Shadow Minister for Communications
Shadow Minister for Community Relationships

Apart from adding to the FAAA pro-forma letter (see FAAA website) your own concerns about Australian jobs going off shore it is wisely suggested by a member that you also send copies to the Minister for Transport John Anderson (Liberal) and the Shadow Minister for Transport Martin Ferguson (Labor) as they are the ones who are involved in the policy development of the major parties.
Here are the addresses:

Martin Ferguson
Shadow Minister for Transport and Regional Services

Great we are stuck with Dixon until 2007.
Dixon also announced all staff would get a $1000 bonus for all out hard work over the past few years. Thanks Dixon, that will almost make up for the pay free we accepted over the past 3 years but won't cover the $20,000 of so I am going to lose through loss of flying if the London base opens.
Mark Hassell puts out yet another of his insulting memo's today saying reports of salary loses of $20 - $30k are exagarated. No Mark, all you need to do is sit down with a calculator and you will clearly see the losses crew will have to bare through management greed.

10 Million Dollar MAN
agree with your assessment re- wagecuts, leemo. the increase in geoff's wages plus incentive bonuses (financial commentator ross greenwood puts it at 10 million over 3 years) certainly going to come from somewhere. screw the staff get fat bonuses. and on the bandwageon is lesley grant and mark hassell. you would think after only 20% of all customerservice staff filled in the staffsurvey they would get the message how pissed off everyone is, not just cabin crew. any other company they would get the sack.
