Hey Cassie...no...i got the email after my references telling me that i was unsuccessful. Like I said, my references were impeccable from 5 Star venues. One of my managers has even a wife flying for Qantas and if MAM would have checked, she would have spoken on my behalf. Even that wasn't enough. Anyway, though I'm on the wrong side of age, perhaps that was against me but am trying with another airline.
I was asked to apply to another airline by a friend who knows the CEO very well. Do you think friends in high places (pardon the pun) is an advantage in getting a gig as CC?

I dont think having friends in high places does anything at all for CC positions, or any job for that matter.
This is my personal opinion, as ive seen people who know this person and that person and have this experience and that, and it gets them nowhere.
Its all about the person applying and how they fit to what they look for, solely on them and past experience/personality and the list goes on etc.
I personally would never use knowing anyone as means to maybe get an advantage of a job or think it would work, but thats just me. I go in Cold turkey, and be myself all the time, and use my own hard work and experience as the only thing. I wouldnt actually like using someone else as a 'i know' to get a job, or even get a look at for a job, but thats me
They have a criteria when they check references, and im sure they know what they look for, and if refs working for the company already doesnt necessarily mean anything to the ref checkers.
You CAN ask for reference transcripts, I think they legally have to give them to you if you ask, so you can see for yourself what was said and vice versa. Hope that helps!

Look...who knows what they are on about. If my chance hinges on some manager or ex managers communication skills, then perhaps it's a disadvantage to ask a 3rd party. I think it's unfair to have to speak to someone for about 15 minutes, like one of my managers told me and expect them to take that time. Some managers are a little too busy. Whilst I appreciate the effort and believe they said everything possible to get me that job, sometimes the process is a little unfair. unfair to them and especially unfair to me.

I think if Richard Branson were to say 'hire this person', I would say to him that they need to go through the SAME process as everyone else applying for the job, to determine if they are suitable and actually meet the specific criteria they lay out for potential employees. That is my opinion.
Not saying the recruitment process is 100% fail safe, as I have met airline staff who do not belong in that job and have NO people skills.
But in saying that, for equality and fairness, i think the process they go by for everyone seems to work, and it suits the company.
Reference checks for most jobs these days are standard, run of the mill, mini interviews, some going for 20 mins half hour.
They have a list and match questions to your answers and obviously have their ways. That is what I have found in my experience.
I have been told I have the job with said company, pending medical early next week.

hey good one Sydneysider...but you're location says Perth...Is that right? I lived in Perth one time. Anyway, keep updating your situation. Would be interested to know how you go, and as for said company, that company is where I applied last week online. Not sure how long this will take before they reply with an answer. Cheers!!!

Taroom - hi there. I'm 188cm and put that on my forms from the beginning. The first thing they did was take my height. When they did one assesor said to the other "looks like everyone can't measure their height today". I was cut after the group activity. Not saying this is the reason but they did specifically comment which did catch my notice. But still go for it.

Dude 190cm WOW heaps tall, your like 7cm too tall though. Cut off is 183cm. (i think that the height restriction is shorter for qantas due to 734 tv screens which would be a head strike safety issue) maybe when they get rid of them they will allow taller people.
Its mostly domestic, but you can go to Singapore and Auckland currently (doubtful though, as most of the senior crew bid for those flights)

Hey does anyone know where do MAM casuals mainly fly out of the Perth base? I heard Brisbane Sydney and Melbourne heaps do we ever do like Singapore or Jakarta or even hong kong? It isn't too much travel time distance difference between from Perth to eastern states...??

one of of my references called me the other day and informed me he had just submitted my reference check for me. does anyone have a rough idea on how long i will be waiting to hear on my progress? i have been waiting 4 weeks since my ad and the wait is killing me!

Hey Dicko...I had problems accessing numbers from my past work 10+ years ago and when I finally did, I passed it on to them via phone. They told me that my file had gone through with one reference from 2. The next day I got the 'sorry' email. All in all, it took 2 weeks from the time they sent me the email about checking the reference and 1 day to read the word unsuccessful. Hope you have better luck.

It was at least a month between my medical and my golden call- another girl from my AD had her medical and 3 days later got her golden call so I think its very dependant on your ASIC security check and how long it takes

Thanks for the info babyrose. I got my call this morning YAY!! No more waiting! I start on 2nd April. For those interested in my time line. Panel on 9th Feb in Brisbane, email 1 week later to say references being checked. That took 3 weeks. Then email to have medical done 5th March, as well as MAM phoning to say they would send the security check on for me that day to hurry things up. Did medical next day. Then final call today, so 5 weeks all up. I am 39 years old, and now very relieved and very happy! Good luck to all of you still waiting. I found reading these forums helped, if for nothing else, but to keep my mind occupied for a while!!

Thanks for the info guys, i hope i get a positive response soon! anyways in regards to the asic security clearance. I have recently started work as ground crew for another airline, if i have this clearance already will that speed up my selection with MAM???

Do you think still being on a Learner Driver License at the time of handing over ID at the Recruitment Day will be a limitation to the progression of your application? Or will they accept your guarantee that you will use public transport to get to the airport on time (and suffer the consequences if not)?

hi, i fly domestic out of perth, we mainly do the boring regional stuff, newman, karratha, port headlands, broomes, kalgoorlies etc. however once a week i generally overnight in Sydney or Brissy, (rarely any where else as the seniors usually get these trips) Unless you are called out that is. The longest flight time is brissy which is about 5 hours. Unfortunately Perth crew do not get any internationals as long haul crew do PER-SIN at the moment.
