Hi all, I'm new to this forum.

My name is Kaan I'm 17 years old from Melbourne and I just had some questions regarding flight attendant jobs.

I'm just wondering if someone like me has any chance at all of being successful for the job. I haven't completed VCE and I don't have any certificates, I only have 6 months customer service experience at a supermarket.

I would like to apply in 6 months when I'm 18 for airlines such as Tiger, Virgin and Jetstar but I'm really unsure what to expect. From what I read here it sounds really hard to get in.

Thanks, hopefully I can get some advice.

Hi Kaan!

Everyone has a chance. It's all about how you present yourself not only on the day - but well in advance. Like in terms of your applicaiton.
You should have a really good CV and covering letter. Answer the questions on any application form making the most of your customer service experiences at the supermarket. Before applying, have a good think (usually takes me 3-4 days) about what experiences you have had in your current work environment. Think about positive ones where you have gone over and above and really made a customers day, to ones where a customer has complained about something and you have resolved the situation.

I never completed my VCE either but this isn't a requirement usually and most people I know have actually become better all-rounded people without finishing High School. (This is not to say I would not recommend finishing high school!)

Start getting used to helping people. I know today, an elderly lady came up to me asking me how to use the coin trolley system. I helped her by showing her how the trolleys are accessed from the back of the line and how she is to put the coin into the trolley and she was very thankful for this. It also made me feel good. Get used to this - it will help you.

In addition, you will need your Responsible Service of Alcohol Certificate (can be done online usually $80-$100) and your Senior First Aid (2 day course about $150)
The Senior First Aid course lasts for 3 years with your CPR component - 12 months so you will need to update this if you are actively applying.
(Airlines like Emirates /Etihad I do not think this is a requirement but a definate requirement for Aussie/NZ airlines)

If you are lucky to be successful for an interview, remember to be confident and always be positive about your experiences. Try and think of situations that you have turned into positives (whether personal or work related) and don't babble too much

Good luck!

Jetstar SEQ have about 120 casuals now so I doubt they'll be interviewing again soon. I would go on your holiday. Will you have internet access? They send you an email.

I think I applied in about Feb, received invite to the AD in late March, attended the AD in April, got notified I was successful (but on hold) in May, and then commenced my GS in late June.

Wink Just applied for Jetstar Flight Attendant

Wow I love this forum. I have learnt some things from this forum regarding recruitment processes, successful applicants etc.
Well I would like to share my experience and whether I would get a chance of getting this job.

Well I finished year 12 last year and I'm wanting to move away from my current job to a more stable workplace where I could grow with a company such as Jetstar. I have been in hospitality for three years as a waiter for weddings, engagements etc. I have been involved in leadership roles in year 12 and have done first aid (although I will need a senior aid certificate apparently, certificate will be useless in this case). On the good note Jetstar and altara have accepted my first application and will invite me to the group assessment day in Melbourne (god knows when). You know I feel very nervous but I am optimistic and want to focus to make the most of this particular day. The only thing I am worried about is my teeth, well my bottom teeth are fine but on the top I got a slight gap between my 2 teeth, this might put the interviewers off
On another note I am having a conflict with University studies starting in March. Since it will be casual work, will they understand my situation or will they just think "oh he got university studies so he won't be able to fill most of our jobs"?
If this is the case I might defer my University studies for a year.

Any comments will be extremely appreciated regarding some of my enquiries.

Hi Ivan

Room to grow with Altara is quite limited - you are permanantly casual and will have to resign/reapply for a permanent position if one is advertised. I personally wouldn't mention Uni Studies at any stage of your assessment day - it is irrelevant and wouldn't be beneficial anyway. Your teeth won't be a problem, but make sure your grooming/hair/clothes/face blemishes are immaculate. If you are successful, I believe you get 10days off per month plus approx 10 on-call days - which are virtually unpaid. Please don't expect to earn fulltime wages. I see so many people desperate to get in as Cabin Crew, that they settle for these conditions which are inadequate longterm.

On another note, have you thought about applying for Christchurch Base? Recruitment days are 28th/29th Feb..... and it's a fantastic base with huge growth/opportunities, plus two-night Fiji layovers

Any questions please PM me.

Thank you so much for your feedback

Thanks buddy. I will be in a suit, groomed and all, face will be clear as I use proactiv. Hmmmm christchurch, thats so interesting. The problem is....... how does it all work? I am from Melbourne and very close to the airport so the base in New Zealand isn't recommended? That means I ought to pay for travel to attend the day (looks like it to me haha)? Plus is that the base they are expecting for me to go every day? I saw it on the Jetstar website but I don't think it will be applicable to me.
On the good note I found government subsidised courses for senior first aid and responsible serving of alcohol which I will start ASAP.

I will whim you a private message

holy macarroni. Got an email from Jetstar today to attend cabin crew assessment day this Tuesday (in Melbourne) :/
I am SOOOOO nervous. I really need to start with responsible serving of alcohol and first aid training. Can someone please link me to institutes where they offer this in Melbourne?

Hopefully casual position is flexible because I have full time University studies

flexible

It didnt used to be very flexible but it has changed you can now give away shifts which is very helpful. You will still have to nominate your 15 days but if you need more than that off for the month you can just nominate random days and give them away once you have your roster. And i guess if you have uni mon tues wed you can always not nominate those days etc.

Thats great news Ivan_Krazy. When did you get your first email from them? I still havent heard when the assessment day is so presume Im not invited to this next one. Use google to find places to do your courses. I did my RSA through a coffee and bar college and only paid $50.

Oh I'll be seeing you there
My friend is also coming haha. We got a small group hey?
I got something really good to add to my interview which has probably already sold myself to them. I was featured on Australia day this year as one of the top 150 photos of the jetstar jump competition (I'll bring in the newspaper itself to prove it and make the interview more interesting). Oh boy I hope this stands out xD

Tips for flight assessment

1. Be yourself
2. Calm down and the interviewers are very friendly
3. Answer all questions honestly, they will catch the people who are caught lying.
4. Contribute to activities, the assessors will be monitoring how you contribute to your team.
5. Arrive early.
6. Talk to people. Hint: Try to talk to a variety of people instead of just a few people.

I finished my assessment today and from the stage 1 (initial interview -- really short, activities and general knowledge test) there were 48 applicants. On the break they would call those who have successfully got through the assessment of stage 1 and an invitation to the final interview. I got a call and attended interview, the interview was cut down to 20 people (and they were looking at a max of 25 people to recruit, I was the only one of the two males that got chosen :/ ). Just remember to answer everything, put a smile on your face and just be yourself. Now I am waiting for a response within a week or two.

All the best to future applicants!

Thanks,
Ivan

UPDATE:
Got one of those distressing messages. I got so close that I wasn't accepted
"We were extremely fortunate to receive a large number of suitably qualified applicants. Following a review of your application, I regret to advise that on this occasion you have been unsuccessful."
I was so passionate with Jetstar and my dreams have been lost
They told me not to apply again until at least 12 months after interview date. Wonderful!

Aw Ivan thats a shame, just never know what they are thinking or looking for. If you are from Melbourne I hope you have applied for VB ASAP. You have a bit of an idea what to expect now at the interview and the questions asked. You will be much better off contract wise as well so give that a crack. Good luck
