Tanzanite - Tanzania ?

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 16:11

Not sure about Tanzanite but it is in Tanzania. The Zanzibar connection is that it was in Tanganika when the photo was taken and Tanzania was formed from the merger of the two countries.

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 16:14

Just checked... no connection to Tanzanite.

dook 3rd Jun 2019 16:15

I was following up on an article about Jake Thompson-Bennett.

If it's Tanzania I think it is the Williamson diamond mine.

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 16:17

Close enough. The mine is at Mwadui. What was the access road to the pictured airfield is now the current airstrip.

At least I didn't get jumped that time. :uhoh:

BTW Flap, Tanzanite is a gem, mostly blue, only found in Tanzania.

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 16:58

Thanks. I did find it and it only comes from a tiny area hence my no connection comment.

Re your foto, how about Frejus?

dook 3rd Jun 2019 17:17

And how about how some of mine last for no time.

Back to you.

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 17:23

Sorry, If you've flown into Nice regularly you can easily recognise Frejus.

I can't believe you have put up such an easy one !

Templehof - first line of the search.

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 17:28

It is easy but an unusual angle. I thought the railway might fool some.

dook 3rd Jun 2019 17:32

I Goggled "disused airfield railway tracks" and up it came from the same angle.

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 18:21

That looks familiar but i can't remember why.

Flap40 3rd Jun 2019 18:38

Is the road the A1?

dook 3rd Jun 2019 18:41

If it looks familiar you're bloody old !

Not the A1. The nearest A road is not in the pic.

When I lived in Uganda, my wife to be bought 100,000UGX worth of "diamonds" that had been "smuggled" out of the mine.

I did tell her that it was likely to be a scam, but she went ahead anyway, even going to the bank to get the money out.

Nice bits of glass anyway. And it was only £30, but as she only earned 300,000UGX a month before tax, so it was a fair hit for her.

dook 3rd Jun 2019 19:56

I bet she wouldn't be scammed again, even though it's rife.

It still makes me smile when people think my wifes' gold Rolex is from Bangkok (it's real).

Might OR-AFL have been a make shift variation on CR-AFL?
CR-A stood for Mozambique.

edit added:
bit strange that the camera plane -KPN changes from low wing with tip tank into high wing with strut.

Flap40 4th Jun 2019 10:45

I'll try Ludford Magna.
