Is the road the one from the film "Vanishing Point"? Highway 6 or 50.

sabredog 4th Sep 2011 11:39

Dixie188.
No, the Highway is PCH1, or Highway 1.

spook 4th Sep 2011 11:44

Thanks Sabredog, Here's the next one.

RAF Shepherds Grove is located on the outskirts of the sleepy Suffolk village of Stanton.

sidtheesexist 5th Sep 2011 16:17

Reg, Schipol?

RegDep 5th Sep 2011 17:11

Not Schipol, StressFree.

evansb 5th Sep 2011 17:18

Okay, isn't this supposed to be Aviation History and Nostalgia?..and shouldn't the challenge photo show a runway or airside area? Or is this "Name that Concession Kiosk"? Early on it was feared that this thread would degenerate into a "Name that isolated airstrip" or worse to "Name that Control Tower"...but this?? Seriously, gentlemen.

RegDep 5th Sep 2011 17:23

Brian. Trust me, just this once.

This has everything to do with Aviation History and Nostalgia. I am sure you will agree when we learn which airport it is. And if you do, please say so then.

Brian, I tip my hat to you and your knowledge, I honestly do.

(All information that you need is in the picture.)

Corsairoz 5th Sep 2011 18:19

Fornebu, Oslo?

Based purely on a vague old memory of the old terminal building many years ago.

C

RegDep 5th Sep 2011 18:29

Corsairoz, it is not Oslo Fornebu. I am not sure if Fornebu is still in use, but my picture was taken last Friday.

And there is something very specific in the picture that will tell you which airport it is. No vague memories needed :). At least not really.

skwinty 5th Sep 2011 18:33

The only special thing I see in the picture is an open observation deck in close proximity to a bar. That must be pretty rare.:hmm:

RegDep 5th Sep 2011 18:35

Think out of the box, skwinty (figuratively speaking).

Edit: Or, look what has been boxed in……..

sycamore 5th Sep 2011 19:01

Who is the chap crawling across the floor,or did he fall off his stool ...?

sabredog 5th Sep 2011 19:05

Flughafen Schönefeld,Tegel or Templehof.

RegDep 5th Sep 2011 19:13

Who is the chap crawling across the floor,or did he fall off his stool ...?
Sycamore, you tell me!

Well, Sabredog, take your pick. Would be interested in your reasoning for your final pick, though :).

sycamore 5th Sep 2011 19:19

Tegel, and Uncle Otto, after his first crash...

sabredog 5th Sep 2011 19:19

Last day of Templehof operations, or possible a Music Festival.

RegDep 5th Sep 2011 19:36

As much I appreciate your approach Sabredog, this has to go to Sycamore.

It is Otto Lilienthal, flat on his face, in Berlin Tegel (Otto Lilienthal) Airport (TXL). Picture taken on Friday on my flight out of there, and especially taken to be posted on this thread.

Otto Lilienthal is lying there, covered by pigeon sh_it, apparently commemorating his death crash in Berlin. Posted below here is a closeup of him.

I had visited Otto Lilienthal Museum in Anklam, a small town up Northern Germany (not far from Peenemeünde), the previous Tuesday. A very well kept small museum, people who love their work and are very proud of what they have built up after the status it was left by the East Germans.

(The story goes that when Yuri Gagarin, after his space flight, visited DDR /East Germany and wanted to pay a visit in Otto Lilienthal Museum, there as a major havoc around because the museum was not part of Socialist History, and had been left to rot).

Now this statue of Lilienthal, outside one of the two entrances to the Main hall, was still some 12 years ago free and visible, although people tended to stumble at it. Hence, it was fenced, and a year or so ago got the bar stands around it, and apparently was let to be covered by litter from the bar and the already mentioned pigeon sh_it.

If this is a disgrace or a piece of Aviation History and Nostalgia, I'll leave to you, Gentlemen of the Jury, to decide.

Over to you Sycamore.

sycamore 5th Sep 2011 19:38

" To invent an airplane is nothing. To build one is something. To fly one is everything".Otto Lilienthal 1848-96; died after crashing and breaking his back .."Sacrifices must be made"... Open House...

EDIT..Bit of a disgrace really.and my earlier comment..

skwinty 5th Sep 2011 19:44

Good grief,

Time for new glasses.

I saw a suitcase and leather jacket in the first picture.

Now of course, it's as clear as daylight.

Good one, RegDep:ok:

KeMac 5th Sep 2011 21:30

I have not been able to get anything on here for ages but may I congratulate you RegDep on a magnificent challenge!

StressFree 6th Sep 2011 09:06

As sycamore kindly declared open house, may I invite offers for where this airfield is?

http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/...6/PB190032.jpg

sycamore 6th Sep 2011 10:41

Middle East or India/Pakistan ?

StressFree 6th Sep 2011 10:56

sycamore, greetings from west Essex!

No its not Middle East or Pakistan.

RegDep 6th Sep 2011 11:03

Snow on the ground, StressFree?

skwinty 6th Sep 2011 11:07

The car that I can see is driving on the left side of the road, so I guess it is either Africa, Australia or Afghanistan.:hmm:

RegDep 6th Sep 2011 11:22

Where would it be rain enough to justify the roofs and arid enough to justify the rest, unless the gray matter is snow and not dust?

Houses are a bit too orderly for Russia or its neighbours, the airfield is not Russian/ex-Soviet, methinks.

Key question at this point is the snow.

StressFree 6th Sep 2011 11:36

Its a very heavy frost (-15c)......... photo was taken in November.

StressFree 6th Sep 2011 11:51

Skwinty, no, none of those places.....

RegDep 6th Sep 2011 12:08

Tough. Could be almost anywhere between 50° and 70°N, even more South in higher areas :suspect:. How about a hint about the altitude?

Not that many parallel runways so far apart on the Eastern hemisphere in areas like that (although there is a lot of long lens effect in the picture). So must be in North America.
