Duckbutt - I'll have a go - West Africa ?

Duckbutt 7th Mar 2012 13:37

Not on the African continent.

A disused former Cold War airfield ?

Duckbutt 7th Mar 2012 14:10

Not former cold war.

I have to choose my words carefully here - this airport was built at a very high cost (by more than one definition) to cater for a planned business venture but circumstances changed pretty dramatically around the time of its completion and it has seen very few aircraft movements since.

I understand that it does still see the occasional visit though. In researching this challenge I have only been able to find a picture of one aircraft here on one occasion.

Not possibly but definitely. Built by the Kmer Rouge with the Chinese with the stated intention of exporting rice to China, but quite likely intended for military use as well. No-one will ever know the numbers for sure but at least 10,000, maybe as many as 50,000 of the construction workers are buried in the immediate area, not all of them were dead when the mass graves were filled in.

The KR were driven from the site by invading Vietnamise about 30 years ago and the airfield was never used. It was said that the smell of decay could be detected 10 years later.

You have it Sycamore.

Borinquen, Puerto Rico (near Aguadilla)
Not Puerto Rico - but you are in the right region of the globe.

seacue 9th Mar 2012 11:26

I would have chosen Lamentin on Martinique, but I thought that the USA didn't have access to the French islands during most of WW2.

descol 9th Mar 2012 12:30

How about Wallerfield - Tinidad ?

chevvron 9th Mar 2012 13:21

Has some features similar to present day Banjul/Yundum but I think that airport was built comparatively recentlly.

nvubu 9th Mar 2012 18:36

It's none of the above, but it is in the Caribbean

descol 10th Mar 2012 10:21

nvubu - we should have had this one by now - I'll guess agin - is it Piarco - Trinidad ?

nvubu 10th Mar 2012 10:31

descol It isn't on Trinadad.

I'm suprised there haven't been more "guess the island".

I haven't wanted to post any more photos as i think they would give it away.

Clue: Further west than any suggestion so far and the the "runway" in the picture runs NE/SW, more like a taxiway today, with the runways running more E/W and N/S (although not exactly on these headings).

On GE looks very run down now.

nvubu 10th Mar 2012 12:21

Is this of any use?
