San Julián Air Base, Cuba.

Open House if correct.

nvubu 10th Mar 2012 16:40

San Julián Air Base, Cuba
That's the one - olympus has it.

I knew the picture would give it away. You didn't need the overhead on 15th October 1962, or the image of Castro at the airbase in 1959.

If you look around on GE, there seem to be aircraft abandoned all over the place, and a line-up of 10 aircraft with seemingly no access to the runway, and they have been there since 2005, when the gate guard turned around and then was removed - there on 1/5, gone by 30/5.

Open House has been declared

Good challenge there nvubu
How about this ?

Kindley Air Force Base, Bermuda - Tower/Rapcon/Center in 1960.

descol 11th Mar 2012 13:29

Yep - Bermuda it is - After posting it I realised evansb posted the terminal building - way back in 2008 -I don't think the tower was posted - anyway, its over to you nvubu.

Oldpilot55 11th Mar 2012 13:44

Wouldn't it be great if the Google car had driven down the runways and taxiways! In my hunt for the correct airfield I discovered the airfields of Puerto Rico and Jamaica. I had an interesting afternoon achieving nothing.

nvubu 11th Mar 2012 13:59

op55 - coudn't agree more, although this time a simple image search worked wonders, try - "Control Tower" pink 1950s

This one is a bit more recent:

The aerodrome can be seen behind the fence on the left :ok:

SilentHandover 11th Mar 2012 17:05

Is it Rechlin-Larz airfield?

nvubu 11th Mar 2012 17:45

Yes, it's the Larz part of the two.

SilentHandover - you have control

SilentHandover 11th Mar 2012 18:47

Thank you nvubu let's see if I can work this again?

SilentHandover - check your PMs

Hen Ddraig 11th Mar 2012 19:00

Thats the long abandoned Piardoba airfield in India and the aircraft is "Rush Order"

Open House if correct

SilentHandover 11th Mar 2012 19:18

Hen Ddraig is quite correct, so as requested Open House.

It may not have lasted long and my technical ineptitude may have helped make it easier but at least I have now learnt how to post a pic. :ok:

olympus 11th Mar 2012 20:36

There is a lot of info on the web about this aircraft (42-63393) named, as Hen Ddraig states, 'Rush Order'. Apparently so named because it flew its first operational mission only 15 days after leaving the factory.

It even has its own website here

As a matter of interest, some sources on the web quote Chiung-Lai (A-5), China or Chengtu, China as the location of the picture.

Noyade 12th Mar 2012 12:12

Not much of a challenge and not really an airport...

Carry on, once confirmed.

Saigon during the 'peace with honour' withdrawl?
US Embassy Saigon. Your control Chevron. :ok:

chevvron 13th Mar 2012 03:04

Open House!!!!!!!!!
I think it was embassy staff plus a few rich locals who bribed their way out rather than just CIA. I Remember the film of them landing on an aircraft carrier, then the pilot took off and jumped out leaving the helicopter to its own devices.
