Measuring the runway on GE, Chu Lai is currently longer than the runway at the challenge - although I think the challenge has been extended a fair bit since these images.

I can see why you suggest that, but we're not in Texas.

The challenge no longer exists as an airfield.

I'm sure it is one of the flight training fields set up by the US Air Service in 1917. The tower is a fairly common feature.
