Brize Norton?
|
That's not Stansted, is it?
|
Not Brize Norton or Stansted
|
To save your bacon, I'll 'flitch' to suggest another airfield very near Stansted; it's a 'Great' place.
(What the hell is he talking about?; google 'Dunmow Flitch') OH if correct. |
Yes, well done - you have it with Dunmow, and I didn't have to use that clue, which I was going to around lunchtime today. jensdad - I was contemplating saying "close" but thought that was a bit too much of a give away.
Open House has been called. |

Don't want to sound 'picky' but my copy of 'Airfields of the Ninth' which I used for reference (my Airfields of the Eighth being somewhere in the bowels of my loft) says the official name was 'Great Dunmow' after (presumably) the nearest post office..
|
I've flown over that one a time or two but would not have recognised it. Under threat from the nearby gravel workings I think. There is in fact a Little Dunmow by the way. Has it's own
Michelin Starred restaurant, the 'Flitch of Bacon'. |

March, march, march, along the highway. |
Craig AFB near Selma?
|
Is it too obviously March AFB in Riverside county, California?
|
Neither Craig nor March.
But it is April now and the tulips are flowering and their pickers engaging in an unusual "sport". Not many tulips in this city but they adopted the sport in the 1970's as part of their annual festival, which also celebrates blossoms. |
Anson trainers? Canada?
|
Commonwealth country but not Canada. Empire Training School activities at the airport during the war but not pilots. Looking at some history for a clue today I see there were some US AAF Units stationed in WW II.
No longer a military establishment That ceased in the 1960's. When i was there to participate in the "sport' in 1980 we flew in in a C47. About a 2 hour flight from the base where I was stationed at the time. MJG |
Ballarat, begonias?
|
Yes, Ballarat, in Vicroria. Long distance marching was the "sport".
Well done. Jenkins can lead the next march. |
Thanks, try this, never been there. Never visited Ballarat either.

P-53 tail nr lead to
Packard-Lèpere L USA C.II then Wikipedia lists this photo as McCook Ohio. |
That's it. Seems to have been a very boring, and short-lived, airfield.
All yours Bear. |
|
Goedemorgen SLB! The sports facilities suggest that this is a military airfield. My gut feeling is that it is on the east side of the Atlantic?
|
Well it is apparently a gliding airfield, not so many military ones of those around east of the Atlantic, it could be that the Sports facilities are an adjacent property and nothing to do with the airfield whatsover, looks like both clay and a grass tennis courts, what is that next door, what sport would be played on such a prim and proper grass, maybe bowls, and what is that behind the tennis courts, could that be a 400m sports circuit? ... It actually looks like a banked cycling circuit.
|
I had to look into some of the questions
indeed East of Atlantic indeed military premises to the north of the airfield but no longer related to airfield Not a Bowls court. No 400m track or banked cycling bowl either. Not purely glider field. |
I understand a further clue might be required.
Although The military complex is not related to the Air Force it did play a role in the MH-17 aftermath. |
Well I've been to Ukraine many a time and NEVER seen anything as prim and proper as that ... So would this airfield be in The Netherlands?
|
Indeed the Netherlands
|
Ah my home field. I won't participate in this search (too easy) and leave it to others.
The MH-17 part is a surreal personal experience. I had one of my first flying lessons on the day the motorcade with the bodies arrived at the base. I passed them on my way to the airfield. No better way to get you back to reality. |
Hilversum! Open huis, tot ziens. 'ZG
|
‘ZG has it with Hilversum.
Archer, thanks for sharing your personal experience All human remains from the MH-17 crash were brought to the Dutch army medical service base for autopsy and identification. The first (and main) transport arrived in an Australian C17 on Eindhoven Air base. A motorcade of 50 hearses transported them to Hilversum. Along the route (100km) people formed a honorary hedge. To give an indication of the impact of this disaster onto the Dutch people: By percentage we had more victims than the Americans at 9/11. Archer, may I invite you to take up the Open House? |
This next challenge has a link with the picture from self loading bear. However it is not the same airport.

But let never get a good challenge get in the way of a nice picture. Did you enjoy the concert? |
Actually I didn't go for the concert. Just to fly to Prague myself. The concert was a surprise during the landing.

SLB sussed my 'tradecraft', Pilzner Urquell and JIP (a Czech cash-and-carry chain) trucks were strong pointers, but I have been to Letnany for a (very lame) GA tradeshow once. How was your landing there, strewn with potholes, I recall? |
