jensdad - you were closer with that first answer.

No-one else want a punt?

Self loading bear 22nd Mar 2020 19:25

Belgium then???
I stab at Liege

Auxtank 22nd Mar 2020 19:44

No no no Bear - South...
jensdad had it with France...

My flight planning software says 160° - (see Airbus A320 ND above) or thereabouts...from Lerwick.

Good hunting Bear.

Self loading bear 22nd Mar 2020 20:58

Colmar has some hills in the background.
But seems to be to far away?

Auxtank 22nd Mar 2020 21:02

They are - as you say - too far away.
But your compass might need a dip - round to the right a bit.

Asturias56 23rd Mar 2020 09:04

S France - Pyrenees???

Auxtank 23rd Mar 2020 09:24

Right country - wrong mountains Asters,

If you're down there see if you can tune to the Toulouse VOR (TOU 117.70) - go TO then fly the O/Bound Rad of about 50ºM. You'll lose the VOR at 130NM or so but you'll need to keep flying a fair bit after that until you get there.

dook 23rd Mar 2020 12:20

Not many navigations skills in evidence here.

Auxtank has told you where it is and how to get there !

It is not so much the skills as the hardware available.
I like this way of clues but I
have no (free) app for air navigation on my phone.
anything you can recommend?

dook 23rd Mar 2020 14:36

Yes - Google Earth.

Make sure you set the distance measuring scale to nautical miles.

I'm sure you have that, but there's one simple thing to do before it. :)

Flap40 23rd Mar 2020 14:56

I think it might be Bellegarde - Vouvray.

Don't mind if I do.

Bravo Flap40. It is indeed Bellegarde-Vouvray Airport; ICAO: LFHN; IATA: Type: Small Airport.

You win the prize...

https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....dc2d3affca.jpg

- though note This Vouvray is not THE Vouvray - Loire Valley, where said celebrated wines come from.

Bear - a good free air nav map is Skyvector https://skyvector.com
SkyDemon is very good but you need a subscription.

Flap40 you have control.

Self loading bear 23rd Mar 2020 15:31

Google earth
A right I used Google maps up to now .
GE gives distance but not heading?

dook 23rd Mar 2020 15:36

GE gives bearing and distance. Bearing is degrees true.

Flap40 23rd Mar 2020 15:44

Ta. Open house.

sycamore 23rd Mar 2020 16:07

So,the DME was to LTP then....?

The A320 ND was solely to give a HDG clue from Lerwick - with instructions to Ignore DME.
Though you're correct in that LTP is indeed on that course.

By that token if you'd followed the nav clue I gave Asturas56 From VOR TOU outbound 50ºM you would have flown slightly N of LTP and closer to VOR LSE at Lyon.

If I do another - Navigate to the aerodrome - challenge I shall ensure that all given nav clues fit together and can be cross-referenced.
It was coincedence that the bearing did in this case - so well spotted.

OH has been called by winner Flap40

nvubu 23rd Mar 2020 18:10

I, for one, have no idea what any of that means - apart from the OH.

Asturias56 23rd Mar 2020 18:14

I follow the railways..............

Auxtank 23rd Mar 2020 19:03

Sorry - navigation's my bag, as it were.

Asters - railways are good - especially as they glint nicely in the moonlight.

Anyone got anything? where's the dook?

dook 23rd Mar 2020 19:09

dook is here, but I have a challenge up on the silhouette thread.

I think 56 might mean IFR.

Auxtank 23rd Mar 2020 19:22

Thought so.
See you over on the silhouette thread.

Self loading bear 23rd Mar 2020 20:46

Should not be difficult as BOAC was only a small operator compared to today’s Airlines?

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....903607d5b.jpeg

OUAQUKGF Ops 23rd Mar 2020 21:19

Hong Kong?

jensdad 24th Mar 2020 00:29

Sorry for disappearing mid-challenge there. I'll be interested to find out where this is, if only because it looks very much like my local. It isn't, by the way. I'll take a stab at Gander.

Auxtank 24th Mar 2020 16:24

Tokyo Haneda

Self loading bear 24th Mar 2020 17:15

Jensdad,
You will have to stay tuned a little longer it is not
Honk Kong
Tokio
nor Gander

dook 24th Mar 2020 17:54

USA or South America ?

Auxtank 24th Mar 2020 17:56

Are we in the Far East?

nvubu 24th Mar 2020 18:00

Is that a KLM tail top right? If so hazard a guess at Schiphol?

JENKINS 24th Mar 2020 18:16

Military Airlift Command.

sycamore 24th Mar 2020 18:16

Think it might be Bangkok....tropical weather, lightweight clothing,USAF C54,couple of Beech 18s,possibly couple of other mils ,left upper...dolly with umbrella...

Self loading bear 24th Mar 2020 19:12

ID of the MATS C-54 is probably correct.
(thanks for this find, I can now present my son with a whole lot of his “own” aircraft!)
The twin engine to be a KLM is highly unlikely.
Weather assessed correct.
Not in the Far East

Nice to see such a great crowd on the search.

Auxtank 24th Mar 2020 19:24

Palisadoes, Jamaica.

dook 24th Mar 2020 19:33

I think you missed my previous post.

I have not missed it all.
If I don’t answer it, it should say enough.

But not Jamaica.

Yes, In the neighborhood as being
USA or South America
(and tropical weather)

dook 24th Mar 2020 21:35

"I have not missed it all.

I seem to have missed something here. If you do not answer then I understand you mean correct. This should be interesting.

Must be Central America then. If that's correct then I assume you will remain quiet.
