JENKINS 22nd Sep 2020 15:27

Interesting, found a colour photograph of the hangar at last. RAF Wadi Seidna.

nvubu 22nd Sep 2020 16:04

That'll be the Getty image you've found, and yes it is RAF Wadi Seidna

I fairly sure that the barracks are still present - minus some of the structures in front of them in my images - which are looking south

Over to you.

JENKINS 22nd Sep 2020 17:49

Thanks. I fear my only response has to be Google Earth. Try this; not former Royal Air Force. Have visited several times in my travels.

nvubu 23rd Sep 2020 06:45

very straight road - Roman?
river
East/West runway?
not RAF, but former Navy?

chevvron 23rd Sep 2020 08:25

Long term car park at left so civil nowadays?

Self loading bear 23rd Sep 2020 11:32

What about the round glass roof building?
north in the photo

sycamore 23rd Sep 2020 12:40

Somewhere in France...?

JENKINS 23rd Sep 2020 13:52

East-West-ish, with no Roman influence. Not in France, nor was it naval, and even though on my esrly visits I should not have been there I found it very civil. As for the round building, I might have to ask the ......

nvubu 24th Sep 2020 07:02

Are we in the UK?

JENKINS 24th Sep 2020 09:12

Not United Kingdom.

India Four Two 24th Sep 2020 15:17

Stone walls, not in the UK. How about Ireland?

JENKINS 24th Sep 2020 15:41

Railway was mentioned; yes, a line exists. The airfield is advertised as International, and does indeed have scheduled international flights. An assassination nearby, nearly 100 years ago, may have had a profound effect on the course since taken by the country wherein lies the airport.

JENKINS 24th Sep 2020 15:43

We crossed, 42. Indeed that country is indicated.

Haven't a clue 24th Sep 2020 15:58

Kerry. OH if correct.

JENKINS 24th Sep 2020 16:23

Yes, that's it. Farranfore, very small village. Michael Collins, 'The Big Fella,' he who was assassinated, or perhaps ambushed might be appropriate? No politics here! My flights were in the days of busy twin piston air taxi work, always a decent bed and beers at the end.

OH declared.

Self loading bear 24th Sep 2020 17:32

Kerry
of course!
With it’s Centre of excellence!

Praslin, Seychelles.

Asturias56 3rd Oct 2020 16:44

Warm yes, Seychelles no - a very long way away

grizzled 3rd Oct 2020 17:09

Are we in Indonesia?

Allan Lupton 3rd Oct 2020 17:25

Or the Philippines?

Asturias56 3rd Oct 2020 17:36

Neither Philippines or Indonesia - still a long way away......... but just as warm!

I'm off out to eat before they close down for Covid........

Self loading bear 3rd Oct 2020 22:24

Those turbo props are Air Santa Domingo Let L-410s
I stumbled over the aircraft type because of the large black exhaust areas.

so are we in the Dominican Republic or one of the neighboring islands?

Asturias56 4th Oct 2020 07:36

Always a mistake to include any actual aeroplanes on these challenges............................

yes it is indeed in the Dominican Republic

Could not match with google maps but based on this photo:
Samana Portillo?

Asturias56 4th Oct 2020 12:23

Yup - Bear has it - the little hut is VERY distinctive - El Portillo Aeropuerto , El Limon, Samana on the N coast of the DR - sadly its been closed for a few years and looks like it's well on it's way to oblivion.

Nice challenge Asturias!
Also because you use your own photos.
The determination of the twin props took me an hour already.
It is sad these little airstrips are closed but if you look at the close surroundings on google maps it is also clear that this could not hold up with current safety requirements.

Now this one
( not my own photograph, but at least not a Google earth image.)

Is there a bonus point for the registration of the SEP at 3 o'clock

Asturias56 4th Oct 2020 13:41

Bear - I try and use my own pics when I can but in this case I had to use others - I remember the strip tho from a while back

That plane in the field in your pic looks like it has pancaked in.................. and left a trail behind it......

Always better than rip the photos from Internet
(as I mostly do, apologies for that)

There are no bonus points for the pancaked Single Engine Plane.
But it is basically the only clue.

nvubu 4th Oct 2020 16:11

Italy... ?

Is that a velodrome?

It certainly looks like that.
On this copy-paste from a 360deg view I see the angled sections being built-up.

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/pprune....5bfdc487f.jpeg

But not Italy.

nvubu 5th Oct 2020 07:41

Hmmm... so we've just got to find a velodrome at the end of a runway with a swimming pool or tennis court in the middle of it. How hard can that be :ok:

It is a tennis court. But tennis court nor velodrome are mentioned in Google maps.
Concentrate on the pancake, the photo is quite recent (weeks).

chevvron 5th Oct 2020 11:43

Runway markings not UK style; greenhouses are Spanish in style or at least Canaries but it looks too green to be Canaries.

Self loading bear 5th Oct 2020 18:27

Indeed Spanish influence. But not Spanish territory

Too green for Morocco, so central America perhaps?

I've been away from this thread for a bit (my appearance at court subsequently took me away for a while) but I see that dook has been banished; which is such a pity, because there was a wealth of old Aerodrome information there.
I wish dook well.
