nvubu 11th Feb 2012 08:47

As it is Open House.

This has been done before, but with a modern photo, these are a little more historical. Almost all the buildings shown here still exist.

The title on the source of the photo below is "A modern airport at ?"

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...PRuNe/015B.jpg

Both photos taken in 1943

Krakatoa 11th Feb 2012 08:54

I will kick it off with Karachi

nvubu 11th Feb 2012 08:57

Not Karachi - wrong continent

edit:- just going out, be back late afternoon.

Lordflasheart 11th Feb 2012 23:32

Accra ? looking south. current runway 21 would be on left of pic. OH if possibly correct - but I'm working on somefink. LFH

nvubu 12th Feb 2012 08:35

LFH - you are correct, Accra, Gold Coast - as it was then.

I guess too much is the same for you to have been mislead with the the stars and stripes and the vehicles driving on the correct side of the road in the modern airport image:ok:

For those interested, here is the unedited source image of the 1st photo.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...PRuNe/015D.jpg

The following interesting image is described as "Near Accra air base a familiar pattern for approaching pilots is formed by these huts for native troops across from the British hospital barracks. The four small huts behind the buildings are shower stalls"

Duckbutt 13th Feb 2012 08:30

Duckbutt 13th Feb 2012 12:27

Not Goxhill, sorry.

olympus 13th Feb 2012 13:13

Staaken, Berlin?

OH if correct.

Duckbutt 13th Feb 2012 13:31

It is, Olympus. OH then.

nvubu 14th Feb 2012 18:32

To keep it moving, try this easy one.

It has been done before, but with a very modern photo.

albatross 14th Feb 2012 21:40

Ascension Island?
Open house if correct.

nvubu 14th Feb 2012 22:01

Correct - Wideawake on Ascension Island. Thought it wouldn't last long.

Not sure if I would like to be in the aircraft behind the one taking off or landing.

Open House once again

I'IGN HD-34 at Reggane Airport Algeria ?

Lordflasheart 15th Feb 2012 08:39

HD-34 (of the IGN ?) suggests it's French North African territory somewheres - after that ........ Is that a row of parked aircraft in the top left distance with the Atlas mountains behind. Distinct lack of activity at lunchtime ! And not a Tricouleur in sight.

Hippo - Re Accra - it wasn't the Stars & Stripes that gave it away (not enough screen resolution here) it was the Pith Helmets. LFH

Noyade 15th Feb 2012 09:03

Reggane Airport Algeria
That's the place sabredog. Your control.

sabredog 15th Feb 2012 10:36

Thank you,Noyade.
Open House

evansb 16th Feb 2012 14:38

RAF Baghdad, Iraq ?

olympus 16th Feb 2012 15:11

RAF Baghdad aka RAF Hinaidi aka RAF Hinaida

descol 16th Feb 2012 17:12

It sure is RAF Hinaida - near Baghdad - vacated by the RAF in 1941 - renamed Rashid Airfield in honour of Iraqui PM and then used against the RAF
over to Olympus

olympus 16th Feb 2012 19:46

evansb got it first so I'll defer to him.

evansb 16th Feb 2012 23:08

Thank you. Here is the next mystery aerodrome:

Russell Gulch 16th Feb 2012 23:14

PNW?

..and a few words

Gordy 16th Feb 2012 23:15

Stanley airfield, Nova Scotia...I think. Has been many years since I was out that way...

OH if correct.

evansb 17th Feb 2012 11:53

Gordy is correct. Stanley, Nova Scotia was a BCATP aerodrome of yore.
The airfield hosts Canada's largest annual fly-in.

As requested, it is OPEN HOUSE.

nvubu 17th Feb 2012 18:39

Lets see how you do with this aerodrome

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...PRuNe/017A.jpg

Let me know if you want or need a photo outside :ok:

TheiC 17th Feb 2012 20:57

I'll take a stab at Woodvale (or somewhere very like it!).

nvubu 17th Feb 2012 21:09

Not RAF Woodvale, and not in the UK

TheiC 17th Feb 2012 21:15

Well, I did say a stab... So, those aren't sand dunes of the type we're familiar with here, then...

Cue the experts, who will work it out from the type of 'Aldis' lamp (using name generically, before someone points out that it's not one!).

nvubu 17th Feb 2012 21:33

No sand dunes anywhere I can see, although those might well be some sort of palm trees out of the left hand window on the far side of the runway.

Russell Gulch 17th Feb 2012 22:08

Judjing by the tea chest architecture: Nanyuki (or Nyeri) 1951?

nvubu 17th Feb 2012 22:17

Not Kenya, or Africa.

1943 - same year it was completed

nvubu 17th Feb 2012 22:33

Here's another view

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...PRuNe/017B.jpg

nvubu 18th Feb 2012 10:54

Timezone is UTC-5. Time of the first photo is shown here.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...uNe/017A-2.jpg

The 2nd photo (10 days after the 1st one) looks to be around the same time - or an hour or so earlier.

Photos taken in December 1943, 2nd one looking east.

Russell Gulch 18th Feb 2012 21:58

B-25's in the photo?

evansb 18th Feb 2012 23:36

Atterbury-Bakalar airfield, Indiana ?

nvubu 19th Feb 2012 08:44

Not in the USA, but it is in country that was allied to the USA, and the airfield was named after the President of that Country - but it isn't named that now.

Used for Anti-submarine patrols and as a training airfield for B29s. At the end of the war the US withdrew and handed the facility over the host government.

I was wrong in one of my previous posts - it was built in 1942 not 1943.

sabredog 19th Feb 2012 10:11

San Antonio de los Baņos Airfield,Cuba.
