Alconbury it is. Apologies it is on the list but I posted it in error for another location. OH it is.

Duckbutt 19th Jan 2012 11:14

If its OH then here's another:

Old Photo.Fanatic 19th Jan 2012 11:24

Greybull Wyoming?
If correct, then Open house.

OPF

Duckbutt 19th Jan 2012 11:45

Greybull Wyoming it is. OH declared.

oldpax 20th Jan 2012 06:36

This is easy, just south of the Equator!

Lordflasheart 20th Jan 2012 22:04

RAF Eastleigh ? Can't make out if it's a serviceable "frontline" Venom FB1 or 4 or a relic of a bygone era. Guess it's frontline - don't think they were much into the bye-gone lot after 1963. OH if correct. LFH

oldpax 20th Jan 2012 23:20

Eastliegh

Correct ,took this in 1961 while in transit!

nvubu 21st Jan 2012 12:38

As it is Open House, try this aerodrome:

Sultan Ismail 21st Jan 2012 13:32

It's in Western Russia, some way South of St. Petersburg.

The surroundings are collective farms which are clearly visible from 41,000ft.

Sorry can't pick out the specific airfield.

chevvron 21st Jan 2012 13:38

I think I can see two airfields in the photo.

nvubu 21st Jan 2012 15:52

Sultan Ismail - It's not Western Russia

chevvron - I think you are seeing airfield like fields :)

Lordflasheart 21st Jan 2012 16:11

boom boom.

Wouldn't want to be down there, and not sure I'd want to be up here either. Looks decidedly hostile, not that I have any experience. LFH

olympus 21st Jan 2012 17:52

In view of the apparent 'action' taking place, can I narrow the search to Germany?

nvubu 21st Jan 2012 18:10

Yes, it is in Germany.

The airfield is being bombed because of the presence of a specific aircraft type.

sabredog 21st Jan 2012 19:11

Marx airfield? Open House if correct .

nvubu 21st Jan 2012 19:31

sabredog is correct it is Einsatzhaven Marx - 53 25 09 N 7 54 06 E

The aircraft type was the Arado Ar234 "Blitz" flown by Kampfgeschwader 76, the date 21 Mar 1945. The attacking planes were from the 486th Bomb Group - Flimsy 170, 21 MAR 1945

Once more it is Open House

Noyade 21st Jan 2012 20:20

Couldn't see this on Mel's list...

Noyade 21st Jan 2012 21:13

Sort of a clue/query. Do you think that's a Mitsubishi Nell carcass at far left? That large glass spherical-shaped dorsal gunners position and twin tail?

Makes perfect sense if it is...

evansb 21st Jan 2012 21:56

Clark Field, Philippines ?

Noyade 21st Jan 2012 22:40

Sorry mate, but we're victorious and landed in Japan.

chevvron 22nd Jan 2012 01:11

With all those C54s (which entered service c'45/'46) it looks like Berlin during the airlift but which airport? Templehof maybe?

evansb 22nd Jan 2012 01:43

Atsugi, Japan ?

Noyade 22nd Jan 2012 02:23

Atsugi, Japan ?
Well done Brian. :ok: Your control.

evansb 22nd Jan 2012 03:22

Thanks. Here is the next mystery aerodrome: (photo taken in 1950)
http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r.../WAD120121.jpg

evansb 23rd Jan 2012 15:19

It is Yokota Air Base, Japan.

OPEN HOUSE.

olympus 23rd Jan 2012 18:00

Try this one:-

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...Airfield20.jpg

olympus 23rd Jan 2012 18:23

Not a bad guess but not correct. You are however in the right general area (East Anglia).

Kieron Kirk 23rd Jan 2012 18:27

Great Massingham.

Ciarain.

nvubu 23rd Jan 2012 21:09

I'll have a bash at Chedburgh

chevvron 23rd Jan 2012 22:37

Looks like Membury but you said it's East Anglia which Membury ain't.

olympus 23rd Jan 2012 22:50

Not Great Massingham, Chedburgh or Membury

Sultan Ismail 24th Jan 2012 03:17

Those trees remind me of Waterbeach

nvubu 24th Jan 2012 07:39

How about Hardwick?

olympus 24th Jan 2012 13:10

Sorry I've been off-line for a while; been worrying about a sick dog all morning.

Time for a clue; this memorial is in the village churchyard and will probably give it away...

http://i247.photobucket.com/albums/g...irfield20a.jpg

sabredog 24th Jan 2012 13:46

Trust that all is well with your dog.
Horham Airfield.
95th Bomb Group.
If correct; Open House.

nvubu 24th Jan 2012 13:53

Thanks for the clue - Horham.

edit - beaten to it.... damn :)

olympus 24th Jan 2012 15:06

Horham it is. Open House declared.

(Dog being picked-up from vet at 1830)

nvubu 24th Jan 2012 17:37

olympus - That was an enjoyable, if frustrating, search.

As it is Open House (and I was close), here is another type of aerodrome.

http://i1191.photobucket.com/albums/...PRuNe/011A.jpg

The date is late 1921 or 1922 - although I'm not sure if that will be of any assistance.

descol 25th Jan 2012 14:59

I 'll take a guess - royal navy airstation Newhaven ?

nvubu 25th Jan 2012 17:40

Sorry descol, it isn't Newhaven, or anywhere else in the UK.
