A fairly unique view of a runway!

oldpax 8th May 2014 00:10

Himalayas

The one where you land uphill and take off downhill!!Ladak?

Mark 1 8th May 2014 12:39

It is a one way uphill runway, but not Ladak. Sorry for the delay, just off an 11 hour flight.

Airclues 8th May 2014 13:20

Is it in Nepal?

Mark 1 8th May 2014 15:11

Yes. That should narrow it down!

Airclues 8th May 2014 16:11

Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla, LUA, VNLK?

Open House if correct.

Dave

I don't know the solution myself.
Perhaps someone has an idea.
What year?
What aircraft?
Who are the persons?
Grateful for any help.

DH Heron flying a Royal Standard and RAF uniforms.

Allan Lupton 12th May 2014 08:16

Yes, it is a de Havilland Heron and either from the Queen's Flight or on loan to them. I can't recognise the person alighting, but I wonder if the location is in Burma or Thailand when Princess Alexandra visited in the 1960s. That might make it Don Muang or Hua Hin. . .

Phileas Fogg 12th May 2014 08:38

Well the RAF Officer standing by the wing, he's at least a Wing Commander, possibly a Group Captain (I can't recall who or what get ''scrambled egg'' on the peak of their cap) so that might suggest that he is the Station Commander and you don't find them on every street corner which suggests this is an RAF Base.

Also, the RAF uniforms are blue and not tropical khaki and the guys in overalls ain't wearing shorts which suggests this is a cooler location.

95i 12th May 2014 09:10

But - who is the main person?
Is it the Queen herself?

My guess was: Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal (Mary).
Some time around 1960.

Is it a Heron C3 (XM296) or C4 (XR391)?

sycamore 12th May 2014 09:11

It `appears` as though the VVIP wears high heels and stockings, but is still quite tall

Terry Dactil 12th May 2014 10:53

Looks like a spray gear thingy under #4 engine, so obviously it is one of the early chemtrail aircraft, possibly one of the first. :ok:

Phileas Fogg 12th May 2014 10:54

Whether it be HM herself or another that gets the Royal Standard flown it appears she is wearing RAF uniform with RAF personnel to meet and greet so she's seemingly on RAF business, to open a new station or medical centre or children's playgroup or whatever, so this should be an RAF base in Europe.
