Only a guess but Rockcliffe - now the home of the Canadian Aviation Museum.

evansb 8th Mar 2008 05:10

Sorry, not Rockliffe. Not in Canada.

India Four Two 8th Mar 2008 13:01

Somewhere Tropical?

evansb 8th Mar 2008 14:08

Yes, it is in a tropical climate.

larssnowpharter 9th Mar 2008 11:40

One is guessing here: Puttalam?

evansb 9th Mar 2008 14:24

Sorry, not Puttalam. It is on an island, and it is historic.

India Four Two 9th Mar 2008 16:20

Well, Singapore's an island so how about Seletar? It looks quite different now, with the reservoir to the west and the reclaimed land to the north, but the shape of the coast looks similar.

evansb 9th Mar 2008 16:43

Not Singapore, Malaysia, nor Indonesia.

MReyn24050 9th Mar 2008 16:51

evansb's challenge

Could it be Labuan?
Mel

sabredog 9th Mar 2008 17:17

The SSK 10th Mar 2008 16:17

A double-decker bus and DC6s, what a fascinating combination.

Turnhouse?

evansb 10th Mar 2008 17:10

Sorry, not Turnhouse.

sidtheesexist 10th Mar 2008 17:36

Would it be a colonial location, Africa by any chance?

evansb 10th Mar 2008 22:42

Sorry, Sid, not on the continent of Africa.

Russell Gulch 10th Mar 2008 23:04

Bermuda?

.

evansb 11th Mar 2008 00:45

Not Bermuda. Not on an island.

Tempsford 11th Mar 2008 12:40

Not an Island? Well that rules out Australia then!:}

evansb 11th Mar 2008 12:58

Not Australia. Not in the southern hemisphere. The airport has been the site of a few historical flights.

sidtheesexist 11th Mar 2008 13:08

Very, very long shot..............Croydon?

Maufe 11th Mar 2008 13:45

Not on an island
Presumably then not anywhere in the UK?

evansb 11th Mar 2008 14:58

Not in the U.K. The airport was notable during WW.II . The airport is still active, but I think the terminal building and control tower pictured have been demolished.

evansb 11th Mar 2008 18:14

Sorry, tis not Ireland. It is a sunny locale, but it is not known for its double-decker buses. The airport had something in common with Shannon a while ago.

evansb 11th Mar 2008 20:57

Going back much earlier than 9/11. They also share a few things that are timeless. The mystery airport is not located in North America.

norwich 11th Mar 2008 21:13

Keflavik International Airport ? Or as was called at that time ???? Keith.

evansb 11th Mar 2008 21:51

Not Keflavik. Not Iceland.

norwich 11th Mar 2008 22:19

Ok, Lets go south and try Lisbon ???? Keith.

evansb 11th Mar 2008 23:11

norwich is correct. Aeroporto Lisboa, Portela Airport, (ELIS), Portugal, You have control.

Speedpig 11th Mar 2008 23:14

Pray tell what did Lisbon & Shannon have in common?

Speedpig 11th Mar 2008 23:16

Flying boats?:O

norwich 11th Mar 2008 23:36

Wow, thank you, I just jumped in here with no knowledge at all ! Have no idea of any links with Shannon, But worst of all have nothing to post, "but I'll be back" So it's "OPEN HOUSE" Keith.

evansb 12th Mar 2008 00:36

Both Lisbon and Shannon were trans-atlantic terminuses, and during World War II, both Ireland and Portugal were neutral. The aerodromes quickly became transfer points and gateways for many a spy, diplomat, refugee and celebrity. Secrets and personnel were often traded.

They are on a similar meridian of longitude (approx. 9 deg. W.) and are by the Atlantic Ocean. Pan Am's Flying Clippers made many trips between Foynes and Lisbon. In 1945 one of Pan Am's last Boeing 314 Flying Boat scheduled flights was made between Foynes and Lisbon.

The SSK 12th Mar 2008 07:31

What bus?

In 1947 Carris purchased two double-deck Leyland Titan PD1A buses (#201-202). Next came 84 AEC Regent Mark III double deckers and 28 Mark Vs. These were followed by 232 front-entrance Mark V models. The Mark Vs were finally withdrawn in 1991.
Did they drive on the left then? Unless I'm having a senior moment the cab is set up for driving on the left - which was one of the reasons I thought it was UK. The DC6s I thought might be French rugby charters, hence Turnhouse. Funny how your mind works.

Dan Winterland 12th Mar 2008 09:35

Jumping in with Norwich's offer of open house.

http://i210.photobucket.com/albums/b...chippy/251.jpg

Not actaully as difficult as it would first seem. Only a little lateral thinking required.

Mr_Grubby 12th Mar 2008 09:44

A Valiant at Goose Bay ?

C.
