Speedpig 15th Mar 2008 05:51

bottom rung 15th Mar 2008 07:57

Henlow? Looks like Henlow. Is this long enough?

Tiger_mate 15th Mar 2008 08:57

Odiham has one of those

sabredog 15th Mar 2008 09:29

diginagain 15th Mar 2008 09:42

ZH875 15th Mar 2008 11:41

sabredog 15th Mar 2008 11:51

R.A.F. Harwell? Apologies for mis-identing the Hinds.

Not Harwell, but they are Hinds.

sabredog 15th Mar 2008 12:29

R.A.F Bircham Newton?

ZH875 15th Mar 2008 12:32

Bircham Newton it isn't.

This tower does not survive, but you may sometimes see some light aircraft and a helicopter flying here.

mystic_meg 15th Mar 2008 13:43

South Cerney?

sabredog 15th Mar 2008 15:07

R.A.F. Cranfield?

RAF Debden?
..............

chevvron 15th Mar 2008 17:59

RAF Newton then.

ZH875 15th Mar 2008 19:10

It is not Little Rissington, Cranwell, Henlow, Odiham, Bicester, Driffield, Harwell, Bircham Newton, South Cerney, Cranfield, Debden, or Newton.

Although one of those guesses is quite close.

Speedpig 15th Mar 2008 19:35

Although one of those guesses is quite close.
That's reassuring!

chevvron 15th Mar 2008 19:50

Well Rissy was close to Windrush, and Leconfield is close to Driffield; Abingdon is close to Harwell;

sabredog 15th Mar 2008 19:59

R.A.F. Wyton?

ZH875 15th Mar 2008 20:25

Not any of those.

This airfield sees many overseas visitors.

Upyer RRR 15th Mar 2008 20:42

How about Biggin Hill?

sabredog 15th Mar 2008 20:56

R.A.F Cosford?

ZH875 15th Mar 2008 21:22

Neither Cosford nor Biggin Hill

The gate guard and main road to this station share something in common.

Arfur Feck-Sake 15th Mar 2008 21:42

RAF Upwood?

ZH875 15th Mar 2008 21:54

Not Upwood, although one of the squadrons which served at Upwood was disbanded on this base.

D120A 15th Mar 2008 23:25

RAF Bassingbourn?

MReyn24050 15th Mar 2008 23:30

RAF Northolt?

ZH875 16th Mar 2008 00:03

Not Bassingbourn or Northolt.

It is near to a Gash bus garage.

norwich 16th Mar 2008 00:32

RAF Mildenhall ???? Is close to some ????

Speedpig 16th Mar 2008 03:10

RAF Waddington, it being nearish to Newark and the Bowbridge Road depot?

sabredog 16th Mar 2008 07:41

R.A.F.Scampton or Upper Heyford?

ZH875 16th Mar 2008 10:56

Speedpig has it, but not for the right reasons.

This was the second watch office at Waddington, replacing one that was on top of the Mere Road hangar complex. This tower was demolished when the runways were built and the taxiways widened.

There have been a total of 5 control buildings at Waddington, 3 still exist

Answers to the clues:
There is a flying club and the Lincs Air ambulance helicopter based here.
Cranwell is close to Waddington
Many overseas aircraft visit the Airshow every year
The Main road to the camp is the A607, and the gate guard is XM607.
50 Sqn was at Upwood with Canberra aircraft and disbanded at Waddington in 1984.
The Gash bus company (its actual name) used to run busses in Lincoln, and their garage is just down the A607 from the camp, it burned down last year, taking a few old busses with it.

Over to Speedpig.

Speedpig 16th Mar 2008 14:14

Great challenge thanks.
And there was me thinking the road was A36, and started looking for aircraft type rather than reg.
The Gash bus company gave me the best clue, so was a bit lucky as I only found the Bowbridge Road depot and then used Google Earth to find the nearest airfield.
Is the Vulcan still there?

I regret to announce it's open house as I'm not at home.

Help yourselves guys.

ZH875 16th Mar 2008 14:31

Yes, Speedpig, XM607 is still there, now parked over by the A15, opposite the spotters enclosure.

She was cleaned and repainted last year, and externally looks quite good.

As Speedpig has declared open house, we all await the next picture.

So first one in gets the call.
