I must confess to an element of surprise - I thought it would have gone by now.

Mainland Europe

A currently active airport which has not been relocated since the photo was taken on 31st January 1998. It's not a transparency, rather a scan of the original print which is in my possession - I was the photographer.

And for the avoidance of doubt the photo was taken from the flight deck observers' seat. There were no 'security' implications. And yes, I was authorised to be there.

Over to you,Ladies and Gentlemen.

Flap40 30th Dec 2008 16:15

Google Earth has it as Tito Menniti at the toe of Italy although another source gives it as Reggio Calabria.

Soddit 30th Dec 2008 16:43

Flap40 has it. Reggio di Calabria Airport,Calabria,Italy ( REG). If memory serves Tito Menniti was an Italian aviator of some distinction hence the airport being named for him.And the site is indeed constrained - the time the photo was taken it was a Cat C airport.

All yours Flap 40.

Flap40 30th Dec 2008 17:01

Thanks. I've lost the photo that I was going to use so OPEN HOUSE.

Phileas Fogg 30th Dec 2008 19:12

This one should prove more difficult than my previous attempt:

S'land 30th Dec 2008 22:12

Blackbush?

Phileas Fogg 30th Dec 2008 23:01

Not Blackbushe

dixi188 30th Dec 2008 23:28

Big building in the distance!
Is it the VAB at Kennedy Space Centre?
Can't find any strip around that part of Florida that matches though.

Phileas Fogg 30th Dec 2008 23:34

It is not in USA

I'm not sure there is some sort of structure in the background, might be a blemish on the photo, so don't think for sure that there is that structure in the vicinity.

mr ripley 31st Dec 2008 07:58

How about Worksop

Soddit 31st Dec 2008 08:10

Long shot - is it that strip near Yealmpton that Peter Cadbury had for his King Air circa 1981?

Phileas Fogg 31st Dec 2008 08:18

Neither Worksop nor Yealmpton

TheChitterneFlyer 31st Dec 2008 10:08

Could it be Otterburn in Northumberland?

TheChitterneFlyer 31st Dec 2008 10:10

Or Keevil in Wiltshire?

Flap40 31st Dec 2008 10:30

Lec refrigeration airfield at Bognor Regis?

Phileas Fogg 31st Dec 2008 10:42

Flap40,

Yes, Bognor Regis 'Airport' :) is correct.

Flap40 31st Dec 2008 10:50

How about Broadford on the Isle of Skye?

Flap40 31st Dec 2008 12:21

Got it in one!

The floor is yours.

Moondance 31st Dec 2008 12:51

Sunshine and tents confused at first, a more typical view of Skye..

Coll, Ballard - EGEL. Before redevelopment, looking towards Mull?

Moondance 31st Dec 2008 14:03

Correct, over to you....years since I've been to Coll, what's changed?

BAMRA wake up 31st Dec 2008 14:13

Moondance, some recent photos here:

Coll/Ballard Airfield

New runway, terminal building, and a scheduled air service from Oban operated by Highland Airways using the BN-2B Islander.

Open house.

l.garey 1st Jan 2009 10:06

If it's open house, let's try this one. I know at the start of this thread that someone warned about yet another grass field, but maybe the background terrain will help. No prizes for the country though.

Geneva, Switzerland?

l.garey 1st Jan 2009 13:49

Sorry AAO. Geneva looks more like Heathrow than a grass field (but in smaller size)!
Laurence

AfgAirOps 1st Jan 2009 15:41

I think Heathrow does actually have some (admittedly small) grass areas & of course its a bit difficult to tell whats behind the camera.... thats my excuse anyway... :}

Another guess, for La Cote, Switzerland (LSGP)?

HB-UUL, picture taken May 07?

l.garey 1st Jan 2009 16:23

Brilliant. Yes, La Côte, also known as Prangins or Gland. The aerials at the back mark the site of NDB GLA.
How did you get the details of the photo? Did I leave an identity on it?
Open house as I have to fly off to LTN tomorrow via EZY.

Thought someone would have had a go by now.....

A clue: The land at the other side of the river is in a different country to the airfield.

The country this airfield is in was a protectorate of a European country & gained independance in the period from the late 1940s to mid 1950s.
