North American XB70 ?
|
Boeing XB-70 Valkyrie.
Henry beat me to it! |
How about an Antonov 225?
edit - err, the special 'Valkyrie' model? |
Correct, henry!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...lastflight.jpg Seen here on its last flight - only 10 years after the last flight of the B-36! |
|
Is it a Catalina?
|
No, not a Cat.
Hmm, did I break any protocol as I did not win the last one? Sorry if so. |
Grumman HU-16 Albatross!
|
Spot on BEags, leave all that mucky engine handling stuff to the Chief Stoker, eh?
|
I guessed it was an amphibian, as it probably had overhead throttles. A quick Google and that was it!
OK - http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a341/nw969/c2.jpg |
US built, tandem seat, twin engined fighter, late 50's early 60' vintage - but I think we'll need more than that
|
...not very wide, lot of dials...hmm :8
|
Not American,
Not tandem seating, ....but otherwise not far off the mark! |
Sea Vixen maybe?
Clint |
Javelin - no tandem seating??
|
One of you is correct. But more confidence or proof is needed!
|
BEags.
I have consulted my 'Boys Bumper Book of Twin Engined Jet Planes circa 1950/60' and am confident to claim a Sea Vixen ! Clint. |
I'll concede - DE HAVILLAND SEA VIXEN:ok:
If I'd taken more notice of the Attitude Indicator in the first place I'd have said Brit rather than US. Definitely a Smiths job. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...72sideview.gif |
Yes - 'tis indeed the mighty 'Vixen!
Over to you, Mr_G! |
When I first started this thread it was because a friend and I were bouncing pictures back and forth to each other trying to outdo each other. I got stuck with the C 46, hence the post on PPRuNe.
I had no idea it would capture all our imaginations like this. Let’s keep it going, Over to someone else for the next pic. Clint. |
|
6 engines, tandem cockpit, B-47 Stratojet :D
And is the photo reversed, looking at the dials/throttles? |
As far as I know it is not reversed, and that is another throttle lever just inboard of the other 6.
|
It is a Stratojet co-pilot panel

It's Tiger's call, but here's one to fill in the time or in case he doesn't post:

:ooh: I've made model aeroplanes with more instruments than that.
Is that a gunsight? V1 flying bomb - the test version of course. or Japanese flying bomb - the final version :ugh: |
It is indeed a sight. Make a choice. BTW, max speed 525mph.
You'd have your toes curled around that rudder bar at 525mph I reckon. |
Yokosuka MXY7 Ohka.
|
Correct. That speed was observed in the dive to the target. :ooh:
|
|
................B-58 Hustler.
|
A B-45 with an 800 knot ASI?
Nope - 'tis indeed a B-58A Hustler. |
Check out this site:
http://www.megspace.com/politics/greenham/index.htm and click on the B58 arrives in the UK link, for an interesting bit from Pathe news. |
No time MJ. I'm off to the 'local' Sunday Night Brains Trust. You have control.
|
John Eacott and Tiger_mate were right.
That particular B47 was a test bed for the Iroquois engine that was to power the Avro Arrow, hence the 7th throttle. |

I wondered if it was anything to do with RATO, or is RATO light the fires and all hell is let loose for a few seconds of uncontrolled thrust? |
Jet Provost??
|
|
Vampire Trainer
http://www.kiwiaircraftimages.com/im...ry/ANNVAM7.JPG I would so like to fly in one of those. Sat in the airframe at Langford Lodge, and it is an office I could get very familiar with, along with a permanent smile :O Thanks Henry, strange looking beasty |
If anybody else would like to set the bait fill your boots, otherwise I'll dig out something in the morning. Must be your turn John E
