Pretty sure that neither Hadrian's nor the Antonine Wall is one of the limits of empire you refer to, so that rules out Newcastle, Carlisle or Glasgow
I'm thinking Alexander the Great might have reached his limit here. Somewhere in , say, Iran? Or even Afghanistan (the British one found it difficult to keep that place subdued)?

The Soviet Empire found its limit in Afghanistan too, but the buildings look a bit too advanced? So yes, could be further East, in the Himalayas. See what Jenkins comes back with in the morning...
Dook:
Are you saying that "Noumea" was La Tontouta? Could you have meant Koumac?
Cheers.

Tontouta Airfield is located in the municipality of Païta roughly 52 km northwest of Nouméa on New Caledonia. Pronounced "La Ton-Two-Ta". Today known as La Tontouta International Airport or Nouméa - La Tontouta International Airport or in French Aéroport de Nouméa - La Tontouta

You certainly have my Empires. Kipling? By inference if little else. Local population reputed to show strains of Macedonian. A game is reputed to have originated at this place, and perhaps the greatest game so far was played out, if indeed it is played out, in the expanded area. Unlike Newcastle, shirts are de rigueur in the area.
Sorry Dook, I know it's done and dusted now but - for what it's worth - I'm still not convinced.
As Jenkins states, it's hard to imagine room for a cross runway at La Tontouta, particular considering the steeply rising terrain a mere1.5 nm from the field (why build a cross runway facing this?). I flew into there often in the 1980's, when the surrounding area was not as developed. Also, the terrain off the runway end doesn't seem to match.
A bit more research, a likely candidate, a much more active US base with cross runaways and terrain that matches is Plaine Des Gaiacs. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United...h_Pacific_Area

I can't post the screen shots for some reason but if you roll the Google earth date back to 2004 at La Tontouta there does appear to be a disused runway on the SW side alongside the Route de la Base Aero Navale.
If you then take an oblique view of this disused runway looking SW the terrain beyond the 'runway' does seem to match Dook's photo.

That will do, old bean. My spot is Chitral Airport, and Singoor is a name very closely associated with Chitral. Polo, The Great Game, the limit of Alexander, and apparently reasonable weather. I rather doubt the latter.
No surge in response to PM, lovely little engine.
OH declared.
