Pretty sure that neither Hadrian's nor the Antonine Wall is one of the limits of empire you refer to, so that rules out Newcastle, Carlisle or Glasgow
I'm thinking Alexander the Great might have reached his limit here. Somewhere in , say, Iran? Or even Afghanistan (the British one found it difficult to keep that place subdued)?
