It is military. In the current GM image the bushes aren't so high and there are three helicopters in view. On checking on GE it looks like those buildings to the north are a non military area - which I didn't know about when I stopped
The following might not make sense until you discover where it is,
The "country" to the north of the airfield isn't a "country", but isn't in the same country as where the photo was taken from.

Maybe Czech or Slovakia..?

sycamore: too far north.
dook:
I only found out about the "country" to the north earlier this year, and decided that I must visit it during my recent holiday as it is a fairly (totally?) unique situation in Europe. Had a nice lunch there.

I know what you are thinking, but it is further west.
The "country" is not a republic.
edit to add: and the airfield is in a republic.

That took a while
Here's the gate photo.
Does my "Chinese" make sense now
Llivia has a very interesting history and has been part of Spain within France since 1659 and the Treaty of the Pyrenees. The location where this treaty was signed is 6 months French and 6 months Spanish. Very nice lunch as well.
I wrote earlier "it is a fairly (totally?) unique situation in Europe" - OK it isn't "totally" unique as I've discovered. There are a number of other enclaves in Europe where a bit of another country is totally surrounded by another European country. The daftest has to be BAARLE - Belgium in Netherlands - check this site and the images of the town.
Did anyone here know about these anomalies? I didn't know about any of them.
Over to you dook
