Open House

Just some of the aircraft attending a very special event. The line was very much longer.

Somebody's getting close. The event holds the key to the location.

The event was in December 1981 when the world's oldest pilot (bald or otherwise) took to the air on his 90th birthday in an aircraft he had built himself using the engine from his wife's Beetle. The Airworthiness Authority revalidated his licence for yet another year. It was reported world wide, featured by the BBC amongst others. The Parachute Regiment dropped a team in and the Air Force did a Fly Past when they finally found the field.

I'm sure I've jogged a few memories by now but where the devil was it?

Found this in Flight safety archive.

"Ninety years old—and still flying. Air Cdre
"Daddy" Probyn, who must be the world's
oldest licensed pilot, steps out of his Jodel at a
special gathering in Kenya last month to
celebrate his 65 flying years. He learned to fly
in 1916, and ended his service career as Commandant
of the RAF College, Cranwell, before
moving to Kenya post-war. Today he still
regularly flies his single-seat VW-powered Jodel"

Still going with Wilson, he's short final for runway 07 with what look like the Ngong hills in the background. The plane is hanging in the roof of the hangar next to the aeroclub. (at least it was last time i was there!)

Daddy Probyn's 90th at Nyeri.

Thanks Mr Grubby I thought I was going to get stuck with this one.
Below is the "great old man" cutting the cake and some links to him.
I was priveliged to be there.

H M Probyn_P
The reference to the flight from near Kilimanjaro to Nairobi on his 90th is pure BS. He flew the Jodel in the morning and spent the afternoon and early evening at the Aberdare Country Club for the celebrations. Baden-Powell was also a resident of Nyeri. It is also the location of The Outspan Hotel which is home to "Treetops" where the Queen first learned of her father's death.
