Mel has it. William B Stout in his twin Packard engined Stout ST-1 all metal torpedo-bomber of 1922. The source picture is just as shown but here is one from Aerofiles.....
When a Navy pilot crashed it, the USN lost interest which forced Stout to seek new finance which came from a group of Detroit auto companies, including Ford which eventually took over the company, with Stout as Chief Designer, leading to the Trimotor.

A very interesting challenge. The beauty of this thread is one is always learning. I never knew of the existence of that aircraft or the Curtiss CT until today.

Something keeps dragging me back to the UK. If that's a fuel tank on the upper wing, then that was a DH trademark, but you have ruled out the DH34, so is it another DH design?
