In reponse to post 5443, my post 5444 indicates that it was not British.

The unique tailplane design looks like the Soviet IP-3 project, but the wings don't match. Any connection?

Evening to you David!

I cleverly filled in the detail...

Fed it into my super-dooper "Aircraft Identikit Finder" programme and it spat out this...

The computer says it's a Brewster P33. Amazing. I got it for Christmas but you can pop over any time and borrow it.

Well, here's my junk-mail trolley which I made the other day, painted black, "silhouette" style (Five hundred houses is worth about $A60).

New challenge...

Evening guys!

this is a US machine
Certainly is. Very large wingspan which enabled it capture an altitude record of 38,704 ft. More clues if you need.

G'day Martin. It was developed from the TP-1 fighter but received a different designation. Obviously you found the manufacturers name? Aerofiles mate!

The pilot who flew the record flight was Macready.

My super-duper hacked programme tells me this is the La Pere biplane, but Mechta seems to have found a different designation.

No, mate.... In fact I found a very good article on it in "Wings". Sadly I quoted you the wrong designation!
