I also NB something interesting.

It appears to have a ventral twin-gun pack fitted. Trying to work out where missiles would have been mounted - unless of course it was for ground attack (helmet-mounted sight wouldn't be used for air to air).

I'll punt ground attack/interdiction.

It had a very specific, aggressive role and is certainly the direction that unmanned aircraft are now taking!

Edited to say that you're on the right track, but in this proposal it was missiles and not guns in the ventral pack!

The various proposals did have a four-letter acronym, but it wasn't COIN

BTW the ventral pack was quite unusual and the missiles were pretty quick off the blocks!

They are mate, believe me!

I can see only two ports in the pack. The missiles (probably rockets is a better term) would have been small, so are we looking at a feeder system within the pack?

Maybe it was not meant to fly low for targets on the ground but to launch the missiles in a rapid burst onto something that came down hot?

The name implies that they were supposed to show the Firestreak/Red-Top generation of missiles a clean pair of heals and were intended to be used air to ground (or very low-level)!

Prolly "hitiles" would be better still 'coz they're not meant to miss !! I agree with rockets, but they are called "something" missiles in the description!

It must have had an auto loader, but that's not the interesting feature I had in mind!

Your "interesting feature" must be the nose then. I don't think it's the RWR at the top of the fin.

Time to punt - French?

Not French mate and get back to the ventral pack!

Reg, I believe from the second letter of its acronym, that it was intended to get "down and dirty" and to mix it with whatever was over the third letter!

I am I am!

It is the same width as the fuselage but why would that be novel?

....unless it's retractable.......

Ahh - it seems circular, so I think it rotated.

I was more inclined towards STIR for Separate Target Illumination Radar. As one can see, am deep in the muddy waters.
