Neither, I haven't found another photo, but surmise that it's a side-by-side two-seater! Interesting wing too, very simplistic!
One Spanish engine!

That's what our Colonial cousins would call it, Although I of course, would call it an Hispano-Suiza, regarding Hisso in much the same way as you do the use of airplane!!
As used in the early Spad VII's
A previous aircraft built by the designer, with help from his students, used an Anzani

A Polikarpov thing, as he worked at Dux who manufactured some 100 Spad S.VII under license. H-S engines available....
Buggers, I have seen (not long ago), a picture of a professor and a handful of proud students, and an airplane with Anzani ring exhaust Kalinin? he was a professor.....

Not a Polikarpov Reg,
In fact, I would say that this designers ranking it the realms of Russian designers is a bit over generous as he was really just an aircraft builder, who became a flying instructor after the Revolution and built this aircraft and its predecessor with the aid of his students.. More to follow in a while as I've something to attend to now!
I said earlier that the wing was simplistic and I dunno what LM would think of this guy; he used his "designer's-eye" (my quotes) rather than any calculation, so the wing was just a flat plate with a rounded front and a sharpened rear edge!!
When he applied for a permit to fly, only permission to taxi it was granted. Nevertheless, after some taxiing tests, he took off and carried out a flight of some distance. One further flight followed including aerobatics before he was found out. It never flew again, but he was considered as a designer for a new aircraft, funded by the Management of the Military AirFleet, but eventually he lost out to Polikarpov!!

I am just loitering in the web, with no hurry to solve this, but to learn about Russian designers and early designs. I definitely remember this flying table from some "funny aircraft" site, but, as usual, cannot locate it .

That's fine by me Reg; I don't think you're in any great danger of getting injured in the stampede to solve this!!
Don't think "table"; but some other piece of furniture with legs, however, I guess that may depend on what language you search in !

His first aircraft, like the challenge, was built where the designer worked as a flying instructor, a City that has twice come under seige, nearly ninety years apart!

So, the predecessor was VOP-1 by V.O.Pisarenko, so would it be prudent to deduct that yours is VOP-2?
Here comes the towel: Yes, it is Pisarenko T and have seen the picture .
A two-seat trainer design was not eventually built.
Fantastic shot Reg...........
Parasol single-seater with 150hp Hispano-Suiza. Aircraft had quite a weird wing: It was just a flat 'desk' with rounded leading edge and sharpened trailing edge. Fuselage also had very simple straight shape.
Aircraft, intended for training duties, was built at Serpukhov School of Gunnery and Bombardment StrelBom by designer and his students (like the VOP-1). V.O.Pisarenko asked for permit to fly it, but since no calculations were presented (none existed!) the permit was not issued. Taxi trials only were allowed. After receiving this limited permit, V.O.Pisarenko boarded the aircraft, performed some taxi... than took off and flew to Moscow Central Airfield (Khodynka). There he managed to perform another flight (before officials were alerted), demonstrating some pilotage figures. He landed successfully second time, but never tried to fly the machine again. Neither with a permit or without one...

It went to evansb . Same minute, but his is was there first (he lives closer to the server) .
Edit to say: I had read the description when I posted Khodynka it the Aerodrome thread, and that's why it sounded familiar. But I found the T (and threw the towel) only after seeing evansb's post.
