Ampclamp

A post from back in 2004 which I came across....

I do not believe that the Australian Government made any attempt to impede the deal with SQ to take News Corp's 50% of Ansett. That honour went to Selwyn Cushing.

At the time of Ansett's demise there were a lot of interesting bedfellows. At one stage QF themselves were having a tilt at AirNZ.

As to the relevance to today, there is none.

Sadly QF's "problems" are all of its own management's making.

I hate to ruin a good stoush so will go no further back in time than the late 90's.

Personally, I think our friend the Night Owl gives conspiratorial credit where it is not totally due.

Indeed Singapore plays a central role in this pantomine but for somewhat different reasons. By 2000 it had long become the HQ of one Brierley Investments, the major shareholder in AirNZ and therefore indirectly a major figure in the 50% of Ansett not owned by News Corp.

Air NZ had pre-emptive rights on the balance 50% of Ansett should it come up for sale.

News Corp wanted and needed to exit. They found a buyer in SQ and spent a lot of time stitching together a deal for AUD 500m that would ensure the recapitalisation and fleet renewal of Ansett and provide a footprint for the Star Alliance in Oceania.

Whilst I agree that AirNZ tried to blindside and outsmart SQ, this was only cobbled together in response to immense pressure from Selwyn Cushing and his fellow travellers who shared the same conflict of interest...namely being directors of both Brierley and AirNZ.

Air NZ,given the price they paid for the first 50% of Ansett, and through them Brierley, would have to make substantial write-downs on their investments (AirNZ in Ansett and Brierley in AirNZ) if the direct deal between Ansett and SQ went through.

Selwyn Cushing used his immense influence (and Brierley voting block) as Chairman of AirNZ to force AirNZ to bet the whole company.

Sure they banked on the NZ Govt to come to their rescue, and there was a certain amount of naive arrogance in thinking that SQ would pour good money after bad, but that all came after Selwyn Cushing (as Chairman of AirNZ and Brierley) decided to put HIS national carrier at risk to protect Brierley Investments balance sheet (which could ill afford to take a write down of that magnitude).

In my view the Hall of Shame is missing one potrait...and one that is very much alive and indeed very wealthy at the expense of
many.

Well he may be knighted but I suggest he be better stuffed and mounted in the above Hall of Shame.

Looks like plan A failed. Gummint support looks like his last roll of the dice.

Sunfish 3rd Dec 2013 02:55

Alan was deliberately put in place to fail so that Dixon, Singleton et al could pick it up for a song. That much is obvious frommSingletons outburst over the Emirates tie up.

My guess is that Emirates is lobbying the Government right now about being allowed to acquire a major interest and thus solve the "bail out" problem.

I told you that QF would end up as an Emirates business name.

neville_nobody 3rd Dec 2013 03:26

My guess is that Emirates is lobbying the Government right now about being allowed to acquire a major interest and thus solve the "bail out" problem.
That would take a change of strategy by EK they're usually not in the business of buying airlines. However it may be an opportunity too good to pass up.

You are now into IT why stay here and give people the sh**s???

DJ737 3rd Dec 2013 06:49

Alan has probably already told Canberra he will shut down QF if QF do not get government money.

The government may just be stupid enough to give Alan the money.
or
The government may just be stupid enough to call Alan's bluff.

Either way this is going to end badly :suspect:

SOPS 3rd Dec 2013 07:22

Reading comments in Crickey, it appears that Tony Abbott has no idea what AJ is on about or what he wants. Once again, Joyce seems to be running off on mant tangents at the same time, and achieving nothing, except making a bigger and bigger mess of everything.

I'm starting to think he is hiding some really big, bad news and he is desperatly trying to find away out of whatever it is, but he can't say what it is, without inducing total panic, so he is just going into an ever steeper spiral dive.

It will take a lot of turd polish to get QF shining again.
SOPS, very astute my friend. What is AJ hiding? Hmmmm, the current situation behind the scenes can be likened to a terrorist strike. Lots of 'chatter'. Well there is lots of QF chatter at the moment, whispers in the corridors, private phone calls and off site meetings taking place.
AND LOTS OF KEY PEOPLE AND MANAGERS BEING MOVED AROUND THE NETWORK AT STRATEGIC LOCATIONS! :=

Sand dune Sam 3rd Dec 2013 08:05

AJs bad news... QF to lose half a billion dollars this FY...the guy is the master of deflection.. None of this has anything to do with Virgin, had QF been a properly managed airline, there would be none of the current issues.... All we are seeing is the end of the line..... Success was had in preventing SQ partnering up with Ansett....after the AN collapse QF grew the Orange Fungus in place of capitalising mainline...now it's cannibalised yield the same way GO did with BA...

Dixon and Joyce.. You two have screwed and ruined QF.. I hope you enjoy your fancy lunches with Sydney's socialites...because 30,000 employees are paying the price for your fcukups...:ugh:

Ngineer 3rd Dec 2013 09:13

$400 million loss is what I heard.

When will they make the announement? I am sure it will be followed by an announcement of major job cuts.

DirectAnywhere 3rd Dec 2013 09:29

Interim results are due Feb 2014. If it's price sensitive - and what isn't in this mess - continuous disclosure is required.

S70IP 3rd Dec 2013 10:21

I just thought Qantas was behaving like a 3 year old, lying on the floor kicking and screaming flailing its arms around, 'cause they didn't get their way.

Is everyone saying Qantas a fly on the window spill spinning around after being sprayed?

Wave the white flag. Raise your ticket prices. Give up the resultant market share. Get over it.

The Australian Aviation market is like the dark side of the force. "Always two there are. No more, no less".

Jabawocky 3rd Dec 2013 10:54

Raise your ticket prices.
I have been saying for years, the problem is easily solved for $5.

Add $5 to every ticket in economy, $15-$25 in Business, and maybe 25/100 for the long haul routes.

Does anyone know how many tickets are sold each year? It is simple maths. And at those small margins I doubt there would be a loss of sales.

VA should do the same. Would do wonders for the bottom line and solve much of the slash and burn mentality. You can only cost cut so far. And maybe QF has a lot of waste still, but fixing revenue is far easier but nobody does it. :ugh:

porch monkey 3rd Dec 2013 11:09

You can guarandamntee that whichever airline puts it's prices up by $5 the other will follow with a $4.50 increase within the hour. It's just that neither one wants to be the first...:ugh:

Stalins ugly Brother 3rd Dec 2013 11:16

Reading comments in Crickey, it appears that Tony Abbott has no idea what AJ is on about or what he wants.
He wouldn't be the only one!

Could it be though that the government already buying up shares but are being vague so as to not trigger a price spike? Isn't it only about the 5% mark when a substantial shareholder has to be disclosed to the market?

Maybe the wheels are already in motion. Although Al still would have no idea that Rome is burning and we would still have no idea what he wants. :ugh:

At the end of the day, despite our opinions on little Al, it comes down to this in a nutshell. Quote taken from the FinReview yesterday.

Qantas has served Australia valiantly over the years and foreign ownership is not the order of the day for our national airline. No government could condone foreign companies plunging unlimited funds into supporting a failing business model (Virgin) at the expense of a national carrier.

Buttscratcher 3rd Dec 2013 13:11

Emirates will buy-out QANTAS

(AJ and the board will concentrate on Jet*)

QANTAS will fail to provide sufficient profits and will be dissolved by Maktoum within the first year or so, and be replaced internationally by his own fleet.

Jet* will run domestic routes in a few countries

......and eventually fail everywhere ( tho, that wasn't part of BGA's plan, as the accountants made it look so good he actually believed the hype...... Dumbass)

Happens kinda like this about every 10 years here..... Odd, that

Berealgetreal 3rd Dec 2013 14:48

Stalin, would you have a link (or date and page) to that quote?

Not a penny from the three owners has been given to Virgin to conduct the business transformation. The money has come from the piggy bank.

At this stage, it looks like the investment is working quite well as Alan Joyce has gone from "they aren't even a competitor" to "we will dump 2 for 1" (regardless of cost/ACCC investigating) to "we need government help immediately or we won't make it".

Indeed, it seems that not even a relaxation of the Qantas sale Act to completely level the field would fix the situation. I don't know about you but to me that rings alarm bells.

You're better off completely forgetting ideas of the government buying a share of Qantas. Its way too public, more than likely it will be a continuation of the dodgy little deals in the background that no one knows about. You know, like the comfort letters and sinking Ansett etc. Gee I wonder what else there is that we don't know about.

Very simple solution:
1. Let go of the market share and run the business like everyone else in the world does. (It's an ego thing I think).
2. Put up airfares.

And the core of the problem is this:
1. The monopoly on business class is over.
2. JB knows QF better than anyone else.
3. Out of the two CEO's which one would you pick?

Just keep going with the line in the sand I say!

P.s. If I was Emirates I wouldn't buy QF thats for sure. Why? Well they sort of have everything they need from QF without the overheads and headaches.

Buttscratcher 3rd Dec 2013 15:02

Why buy it?
Beats me, but Air NZ bought Ansett for some reason
......to put it out of it's misery perhaps?

dragon man 3rd Dec 2013 18:00

Qantas is so strapped for cash that although last year new Xmas decorations were purchased for the lounges they will not pay contractors to come in and put them up. I also believe that three of the Jetstar Hongkong A320s will be coming to Australia put on the registrar here and then placed in storage. No prizes for guessing who will foot the bill.

73to91 3rd Dec 2013 20:29

2. JB knows QF better than anyone else.
3. Out of the two CEO's which one would you pick?
Lets say they survive, who would you pick as the new CEO?
Interesting question because when AJ goes, so should the board. So a new board would be responsible for the new appointment of?
1. Bruce Buchanan, :=
2. Jayne Hrdlicka,
3. Lyall Strambi
4. Simon Hickey
5. Rob Fyfe, :ok:
6. Brett Godfrey

Only 1 person there that I'd nominate and he did turn Air NZ around.

like everyone else in the world does. (It's an ego thing I think).
2. Put up
airfares.
1. American airlines have Chapter 11 protection, other airlines have different forms of government support e.g. lower fuel prices or lower or no taxes.
It just ain't a level playing field.

2. As the flying public vote with their pockets raising fares will only drive customers to other cheaper subsidised airlines.

IMHO

Cheers.

Vote #1 an inanimate carbon rod

itsnotthatbloodyhard 3rd Dec 2013 22:49

I would like to vote for the carbon rod as well.

Something that shouldn't be forgotten:- When FWA terminated industrial action after the grounding of a couple of years ago, Joyce and Wirth did a lot of trumpeting about how this was an endorsement of 'management's right to manage'. So if they've had a couple of years where their 'right to manage' has been unchallenged (and during which we've had constant self-congratulatory statements from them about how 'our strategy is working', etc), then maybe it's time they stopped blaming everyone else and took a bit of responsibility for cocking it up.

Let's also not forget that less than ten years ago, Qantas was in a very strong position, with little domestic competition and having got through SARS, 9/11 etc in much better shape than plenty of other airlines out there. Sure it's had to cope with a few things in the meantime (though it's not as if QF was the only company to be affected by the GFC), but even so, they've managed to stuff this up in an amazingly short period of time.

Ok, this quote right here really worries me. At what point do they need "Contractors" to come put up Christmas Decorations? Why aren't the staff they already have able just to take a little time when it's quiet to tack up some Decorations?! Isn't this a massive sign of stupidity and wastefulness when they require Contractors to come do something like this?! :suspect:

If their staff had to do it they would have to have special OH&S training, do a risk assesment of the hazards involved at working at heights, and all the rest of the proforma crap you have to go through just to do your job, Christmas would be over. (Qantas just following legislation)

No wonder we are pricing ourselves out of the market. I mean it's OK to be safe in your employment but you don't need the "cotton wool effect".

All these rules cooked up just to keep the non productive employed?

Cheers.

VH-ABC 3rd Dec 2013 23:57

Xmas decorations around your house are one thing. I'm not a huge fan of step ladders, but I'll do it.... Xmas decorations around an airport terminal requires cherry pickers, scaffolding, fork lifts, electrical work, heavy lifting and time. Let the staff do their actual work. I'm positive the customers would appreciate it more.
