Allow me to kick the hornet's nest

Couldn't think of a better place to bring attention to this.

I, personally am not surprised, since I can imaging there are many high hour pilots who have not "Experienced" non-normal procedures outside of training (More than likely due to their exemplary TEM). They probably sweat just as much in the check sim when S hits the F

I noticed the report mentioned many inconsistencies with the data presented from the 3 airlines. How can you draw conclusions from that data that they admit is inconsistent or incomplete? Were they even Aus airlines?

They also stated something about data collected from cadets at the 5 year mark. Apart from Qantas cadets what other airline is Aus has had cadets flying the line for 5 years. I don't think Rex got a kid online til mid 2009!

Sure, low hours crew will need to build their leadership and SA skills, but I could say the same of many ex-GA/DF with 10-20,000hrs. Even real world experience counts for nothing if you are unable to call upon it.

Murch, the experienced guys you're trying to show are at the same skill level as a newbie will be the ones you're sitting next to for many many years, absorbing some of that experience. Do you think it's clever to discount the value of years of experience before even starting your flying career?

Ask the guys on the front line who are doing the training, not the airline. All of us sweat in the sim, it's because we want to do the best job we can.

To borrow a well-versed saying - you don't know what you don't know.

One of my offspring attended the Melbourne assessment, happy with their showing. Not expecting any news on progression to next stage for a couple of weeks.

Umm... the assessments start on the 26th for the Sydney people and I'm pretty certain the Melbourne guys are on the 28th?

Actually, my bad, the Melbourne people were last Wednesday.

But the Sydney people are definitely this Monday.

No indication of numbers. Was pleased with how interview went, but then no indication from panel as to what they thought or what they were looking for in regard to flying experience/age etc.

Having been on line for a while now I can confidently say that the majority of Captains I fly with say that they would prefer to fly with an ex cadet than a direct entry.

We provide precise, intelligent and robust applications of the required procedures and when it comes down to it this is what provides the best practice and safest outcome.

For all of those applying for the Virgin cadetship, best of luck!

Remember that in the interview they want to see someone who is confident and able to speak up when required.

For the first few years of your flying career you will be flying with many old Captains who think that they know so much more than you, have seen it all, done the hard yards blah blah blah but the reality is you will end up saving their a*rse more than once because they can't see past their own ego.

It is the way of the future and 20 years from now just about all RPT Captains will be ex cadets and as the statistics already show the standards, professionalism and consequently safety will all be improved!

You mentioned panel...so this wasn't a one on one interview as indicated on the cadetship website? Do you know what is involved with the rest of the process? Further interviews and the likes or are they making a decision from the assessment day
.
The email my son received from virgin about the recruitment process is slightly different to what they say on the virgin website.

I'm only guessing here, but I'm under the impression they make a decision from the assessment day and if they call you for a further interview it is because you have been accepted in and they just want to double check that your the right person for the cadetship and to make sure you have sorted out your class 1 medical etc.

Panel of 2 - check captain and someone from HR. Next stage is another interview, not too sure of makeup but imagine it will be similar.

To my knowledge none of the applicants were told if they "passed" or "failed" on the day. To be notified by phone call. They said they will give feedback to those who don't make the next stage.

Funny you say that cause I have spoken to very experienced Capt's who have been Capt's for many years on many continents flying everything from F27's to A340's. They all agreed that while cadets were great and regurgitating the company manuals, they were a little less confident with flying the aircraft (with the odd exception). It was almost like single pilot most of the time until they had maybe 50 sectors under their belts.
We provide precise, intelligent and robust applications of the required procedures and when it comes down to it this is what provides the best practice and safest outcome.
So you know how to read a checklist. Good for you.

Some advice for this years applicants. I went into the AC with a bit of flying experience last year and the questions in the panel interview reflected where I was at.

Hadn't flown in the previous year so was rusty on the knowledge and drew donuts to a fair few questions. Told them honestly I didn't know the answer to those ones and didn't want to make one up for the sake of an answer. Walked out of the interview thinking there was no chance I'd make it through and wrote myself off. Got invited to the next round.

Know your strengths and play to them

All of your posts are about your son here, are you taking him by the hand to interviews and stuff? If he ever gets the job will you tell him what to do in the cockpit too? It looks like junior needs to grow and live a little before he can be trusted human lives, how about he learns to drive a car first.
