GA stands for General Aviation, meaning charter work or work not relating to the airlines in general.

Hi Reda07,

GA stands for General Aviation. It can also be referred to as OB "Out Bush" UN "Up North" or DTHY "Doing the Hard Yards".

If you ask them, pilots who have been through GA are generally better equipped for the rigors of modern airline flying.

Just finished the testing. Wasn't great - I think I may have completed 31 out of 51, a couple of which I'm iffy about. Anyone else done it yet?

I finished my application early in the last week and is still under review.

Does anybody know the number of cadets they are looking at taking for 2013? Is it the same as last year a number of around 8-10?

What kind of questions were they?

Numerical reasoning?
Verbal reasoning?

Numerical, verbal and abstract reasoning. Identifying patterns in shapes, words and numbers, basically.

I actually started my application the day they opened 4th, but had to wait for the prerequisite report... so actually got submitted 15th... I have a strong feeling the my ~185 hours will let me down, so I think I might just finish CPL and work on from there... BTW anyone got ideas for where to find fresh CPL work? Any threads on pprune?

There is information available and not really that hard to find over in the GA forum.

What kind of questions did they ask you in the testing? Basic math physics questions or were they aviation related I.e. distance and speed calculations?

I had a small problem with the test.

You can only do this test once every 12 months. I completed it last August as part of the recruitment process for the VA Cadetship. That now means that I have to re-submit my results from last year. In other words, it wouldn't let me actually do the test again - it only let me submit my 2012 answers.

Anybody else have this problem?

EDIT: Here's from FAQ on the test site:

Why can't I complete the recruitment assessments more than once in a 12 month period?
To ensure that all candidates for employment have an equal opportunity to perform and that no-one is over-advantaged by practice, you won't be able to complete a Onetest recruitment assessment again within 12 months.
If you apply for another position with the same organisation, or another organisation, within that 12 month period, you'll be asked to release your previous responses. These will then be compared to the relevant comparison group for the new position, therefore your percentile score may be different from the first time you completed the assessment.

Nothing to do with aviation at all. They were just your usual IQ test type questions - basic algebra and numerical reasoning, word matching, and shape matching. Not really the kind of stuff you need to study for. Just do a couple of online IQ tests, like the MENSA workout to warm yourself up for it.

Maybe, but it's the way of the world: start small & step up by increments. Having multiple levels of automation at your fingertips in a jet is very helpful, as opposed to man-handling a steam-driven aeroplane with props (not that I'm specifically accusing the ATR of being steam-driven). Flying from ILS to ILS under the umbrella of constant ATC monitoring is certainly easier than ducking & weaving around traffic & weather OCTA & at CTAFs. But what about the fact that things are happening a whole lot faster in just about every phase of flight? What about energy management? What about the fact that it's a lot easier to slow a prop from 250kts inside the terminal area than a heavy jet? What about when you've got your profile looking just right, & all of a sudden ATC reduce your track miles to tighten up the sequence, & suddenly you're scrambling to get it under control?

Jets may be easier to fly than props, so long as it's under optimum conditions. But the increased levels of automation can be just as much a trap as a help (if you don't have a solid understanding of the numerous modes of operation & how they interact), & with regard to the other stuff, as soon as ATC start dicking you around & messing up your game plan, props start looking a whole lot easier to manage.

Whilst I have no problem with cadets, I would not want to see one thrown into any seat of a jet (including the jumpseat) without first having gained some consolidation experience in props. That's just the way it is.

I am yet to receive an email but my status is still under review. What time did the applicants who have received emails submit their application? Maybe because i sent mine in a little later?

For those of you who revived an email for a psycometrics test, does your application still say "under review" ?
