For those interested, look into demographic shifts in nearly every western economy, go and look at www.abs.gov.au

Have a read of Occassional Paper 2 on demographic shifts

Well worth a read

..............freddy as mentioned well written post.....................why do pilots do what we do for all the crappy reasons you showed??.............well simply 'cause we love the exhileration flying, & sadly that comes at a cost.............cost being the operative word !.

The rich (those that don't fly that is ) might be smart, get well paid, have all the 'toys' but do they get the boyish (girlish) thrills we still get when we are at the controls of a plane where the sky isn't the limit !

Answer to pilot shortage

ALAN JOYCE: We think there's great opportunity for a business that trains pilots and provides them for the group into the future in all those different areas. It can be a profit centre in its own right.

Well said Fredie

In a lot of cases the question for those in the sought after bracket, is really two questions:

1. Do I want to move on to better things (Happy where I am), and

2. Can I move on to better things (wan't to but can't for what ever reason).

The way I see it there are a few categories for pilots in this senario:

Those that want to move up reguardless of anything, (usualy low hour/experiance)
Those that are considering moving (just waiting for the right job)
Those that want to move up but can't (lifestyle or ability)
Those that are mostly happy (will move only for that very right job)
Those that are happy where they are and will not move

Lots of companies will now look again at those that they have rejected in the past.

I belive that there is a large pool of experienced pilots out there in the last few categories, Ie will move but it has to suit them.

There is a shortage of Pilots that are eligable or WANT to take these jobs. but there is a pool of pilots out there who can fill the positions IF the right conditions are in place. (life style, basing, money, get through on second go, reduction in requirments etc)

It would be nice to stand here with my hand on my heart and say that I am happy, but the sad truth is that money rules the world, and most of us (myself) included need more to continue with our lifestyles (wife, kids, house, drinking, fast cars/girls etc).

So I am in the category of wating for the right job, or untill I get desparate enough (soon).

PS I don't belive that companies will improve conditions enough to stop the drain from upper GA. They know that it wont stop the drain and will hold off untill things start to get really serious for them.

Agreed. I've said before that I'm convinced that employers view the current shortage as a cyclical event that will swing back in a year or two. But the article linked to by Anonymus6 showing how drastically wrong they are. In the order of 10,000 jet drivers needed per year until 2025!! It'll be hard to get anyone to fly your Dash/Bras/Conquest while those sort of numbers are flying around. Unless of course T & C's start getting addressed on a large scale.

Scenic tours around the Kimberley and other parts might become a thing of the past if the Alteon "beta test" works and newbies go straight into a heavy jet...

I'd love to fly around there again in something other than a 210. Not sure though that I'd want to do it twice a day three times a week for six months again plus other flights... I actually loved that area.

How would a Hawker 850XP sound. Ex Broome Av pilot did a scenic over the Horri Borri Boogi Woogi just a few months back in his new toy, a Hawker 850XP with Maroomba.

ETIHAD are looking for 425 Capt/FO between now and the end of this year, not necessarily type rated 1000 hrs on jets over 60 tons http://careers.etihadairways.com/ehi...obListing.aspx

QATAR are also looking, as are EK, China Airlines, EVA and every Pilot employment agency you can think of. Some nice deals going on the financial side of things too.

Unfortunately "medium, multi crew, jet" is need for the better jobs, but its all got to filter through. Requirements are definately coming down and what was previously "required " is now "advantageous"

Metro Man, What you have failed to divulge is that the age limit has now moved to 65. Even the USALPA have finally accepted the increase. Therefore it’s going to be a few more years before the so called shortage actually bites, by then the cycle might have turned. At the moment there is a shortage of experienced Captains.

There is no shortage of wannabes, when we see airlines paying for endorsement training one can start to assume the shortage has arrived. As long as young guys or even older guys are willing to pay for an endorsement just to get into a jet, the situation will not improve. Terms and conditions are still going south, putting a 400 hour wonder into the right seat is becoming the norm, as long as the guy in the left seat is experienced and competent. Things are getting worse, with experience levels that are required getting lower which means the right seat is easier to fill at no cost to the company because a lot of the Fo’s are self sponsored. The good days are over. I guess it’s better than GA.

Talking The Australian

.... The Australian today had again, quite a few jobs...

I saw a quote used which I quite liked in D&G.. I can't exactly remember where it was - but it was something like 'The airlines are gonna rip the guts out of REX!'

If they're gonna rip the guts out of REX, what are they going to rip out of... say Skytrans in FNQ? They have a minimum of 1000hrs and 200Multi now.

I fear what we're about to see? (In a good way )

Jobs Galore

I was particularly impressed by the one offering in today's Australian saying "Choose a lifestyle rather than just a job"

POTO,
Before you get too impressed with the "Lifestyle" blurb, best to talk to a few of the guys that work there. Company tried to get the ATR on line without any increase in conditions for the S340 crews. Pilots divided on what terms they will accept to fly it (surprise surprise). Rostering is a shambles. Safety manager resigned (maybe not a bad thing).Pilots leaving to other carriers in droves and not just for more money. Some just had enough.
I would rather express interest in an operator that delivered on T and Cs, stable predictable rostering and had a cohesive pilot group (the two former follow on from the latter) rather than an operator that offers the ethereal, intangible lifestyle bull.

flying-spike,

I think Poto's remark may have been tounge in cheek. At least I hope it was.

No such thing as lifestyle left in this game mate.
