I think if you look at where the money came from for the Saab aircraft it would have been Air New Zealand. I think if you look at the history you will see many seconded staff went from Air New Zealand to Air Nelson in the early days, especially in the engineering department and QA.

If Air NZ had not put their money into Air Nelson it would not be here today. Just like Eagle and its new aircraft, all Air New Zealand money and control.

I think your wallet is wound too tight.
Maybe those people wanted a different lifestyle....?
QA, I don't think so. I gather that their QA chap ain't from Air NZ. Maybe a few in ENG, but they tend to train their own...
Pilots, a few, but not huge numbers.

It was to effectively stop the pilots swapping from fleet to fleet. Now you start on the Saab and if you want to go up the ladder you apply to the next operator, Mount Cook or Air NZ.
I don't know from what far off land that comment came from. And re progression, Lad, (I'm guessing you stand to pee) it's always been like that. There has never been any god given right to enter Air NZ.

THUMPA do you know someting the rest of us don't? As the perennial drive to push costs down will inevitably impact on training, do you believe the current standards will prevail? Of course not!

Try engaging your brain before going off half cocked! The lack of good training in parts of Asia and Africa sees those two continents with the worst safety records on the planet. Just so happens many of those operators pay the lowest wages, thus attracting the lowest common demominator to the industry.

If it is disgraceful to draw comparisons with other proven failures, well I am sure as hell guilty, and do not apologise! If you want to bury your head in the sand, go for it! Many others are not quite so naive.

Listen here Sperm

If anyone with an ounce of experience in the Airline Industry would be aware of the high standards of training and performance required. Now I don't think checkers are going to let loose anyone not up to scratch. I know it wouldn't happen in my Airline.

Come on you must realise. And we do not have the same culture as that of Asia and Africa. Hence we do not need comments of hull losses etc. Because mate it is not going to happen. Good luck to anyone he gets to drive a 73.

Spermbank.
Maybe when one is expressing ones point of view, one should have the facts.
Having first hand experience with the shearers strike let me point out that the wide combs were not the main issues in this industrial matter. The huge influx of kiwi shearers resulted in our annual shearing season going from 11 months employment to 6 months. They worked for less per sheep, they worked on sat and sun (this was taboo in the excisting award), they shore cancer and disease ridden sheep (taboo), they slept and lived in less than adequate dwellings eg tents, cars, the shearing shed itself (all taboo)...the list goes on and on.
I am neither a unionist nor a scab.
In the future consider all the facts before making statements presented as fact.
ps. It is a documented fact that NZ's have taken advantage of industrial disputes in this country over many years in many different industries to their advantage and our disadvantage, ie shearing industry, SEQEB dispute, previous and present aviation disputes and many more. Open your eyes up.!

Nike, Tape it Shut has got the basic facts correct. The point being that ANZ needed some thing to replace the F27, aircraft and crews, without any disruption to the domestic routes. If they had had no backup, in the form of Eagle and Air Nelson, do you think ALPA would have let them lay off all the F27 crews without considerable industrial action???. This was the first time that ANZ had ever laid off any aircrew, and it created quite a shock for many people. To achieve this ANZ had to get in behind Air Nelson an Eagle Airways, who at this time really were third level, and get them up to an acceptable alternative to the Friendship fleet that they were to replace. If ANZ did not have the necessity to replace the Friendships, and did not have the requirement to invest much finance and expertise into Air Nelson and Eagle Air who knows what the state of play would be now, the two small third level airlines may well have gone way of their predecessors in the third level airline world in NZ.

Guys & Gals,

You all have too much time on your hands. You spend tooooooooooooooo much time bitching & moaning.

Unions only get establised when there is poor management. A good manager gets rid of 'turbulence'. They want a smooth ride - just like the passengers.

Now children, before you start sniping at me. I work in an airline that sadly has a 'dinosaur' mentality union. I recently flew with an F/O on an all night 2 sector duty. On the return leg all he did was work out which of the next months 3 all night duties he was going to pull sick on. Or what about the pilot who refused to do a sim session because he was 1min - YES ONE MINUTE under the required minimum rest period after positioning to the sim lcation and incurring a delayed arrival. This attitude makes me sick. Aviation personeel are meant to be 'of good character' and have integrity. What I often see fails to even register in the same planet as 'good character'. Integrity I spell -I N T E G R I T Y- is a quality pilots are meant to have. Pulling sick because they dont want to fly is unprofessional. Perhaps some of these individuals have not been unemployed long enough - or ever. In some airlines, this culture of 'sickness' is not tolerated. Immediate dismissal is the order of the day.

Now genuine 'Sickness' is tolerated. But I've had cabin crew report for Sunday morning flights having come straight from the night clubs! Do you as Capt allow them to board and operate?

RYANAIR have a gem of a system to reduce sickness. At the begining of the year, all employees are entered into the christmas draw- a Landrover Freelander (4x4) . When they have a day off sick, their name is removed from the Christmas draw. Needless to say, come Sep, people will report to work with the worst flu ever and sperad this around via the efficient acft ventilation system. Hows that for CRM!

I give an honest days work and in return I expect a fairs day pay.

Is that too much to ask?

I need to top up my tan before doing another all night 2 sector duty, so will keep QF incidents that I have observed about crew bitching when they got a duty change. ie wanting 3 days notice for a duty change - which was only departing 5min later, going to another city, and returning to the original base 20 min later than their original duty. They wanted this , that and every thing under the sun. Perhaps thats why Dixon wants to make 25% of them casual employees asap.

What is the significance of 'UB40'?

Bye for now- and dont thow sand in the sand pit.

You mentioned the Sandpit. Build up some hours on jets in NZ and come to Emirates etc to make some money.

I hope your situational awareness is better in your 737 than your awareness of how the market is presented at the moment.

Emirates has 1800 on the hold file. All suitable for interview with differing experience and priority-basically jet experienced, many with command jet time and some 777/330 endorsed. Pilots are flocking from the low cost carriers to what is perceived as one of the last bastions of well paid flying jobs.

Will Emirates notice the market by the time you qualify for a hold pool BCF? See the big picture now? Eventually the market gives.

For an improvemnet in New Zealand pilot conditons I here PIA is recruiting. That's Pakistan Airlines and a choice of Karachi, Peshawar or an Islamabad base. Imagine how much you could save and send home living there!

BCf Breath, you are way wide of the mark with your comments on TPC. It was that simple and it was a fuc king disgrace how the NZ ALPA behaved when it all turned bad. It was also a disgrace when those lecherous bastards at the NZ ALPA that line their own pockets often refused to go into battle for their members over pay and conditions when those members weren't senior Air NZ or Qantas.

People paid their dues for years and when they needed the union for legal advice it was nowhere to be seen. I, like a few other NZ ALPA members, have not particularialy found memories of sitting at ALPA house for hours on end begging for help.

They are basically thieves. They take money and offer nothing in return. I'd be surprised if it had changed.

Yes - the union should be called the Air NZ Jet Pilots Union. The one that doesn't give a damn about anything that doesn't have jet engines and a Koru on the tail. The one that puts a scope clause on the Link guys so they will never see a jet.

The TPC drivers were about as significant as a student pilot in a 152.

It may be rumour but I think you will find that the main Air NZ pilots have done the deal where they get to fly regional jets if and when they turn up, not the Link pilots.

Funny union where they allow the Mount Cook/Freedom pilots onto their seniority, but not the Mount Cook/Turboprop guys. Funny union that allows the main Air NZ pilots to cream millions in super while the Air Nelson guys had nothing for years.

If you don't fly a jet you are very low priority to the New Zealand Airline Pilots Association.

I've yet to see such a beast as a Mount Cook/Freedom pilot on Air NZ senority. There ain't such an entity. Remember that Mt Cook is Link as well.

Freedom yes. Mt Cook, Nah!

That rumour refers to, I think, any regional jet over 70 seats. And as far as I've heard, not in any Air NZ contract. I could be wrong.

Re the TPC thingo, it didn't make a lot of waves outside alpa house then. The few I've talked to didn't seem to jump on a high horse. Maybe they'd all been beaten up too much. Or looking for a length of rope.....

Whatever.
Like I said b4, get your job and be happy. Join or dont join. Your call. Just don't bag it to those that like the benefits (& aren't card carrying .......)....

But if you want change then put your hand up to do something about it!

You loose your job

You get shat on by the a ssholes at the union

You can't afford to pay your dues any more

And you actually wonder what's the point since you've been paying them since your first GA job many moons ago and only really needed the union's help now.

Not a very good time to start thinking about "putting up your hand and doing something about it"

I did at the time, however, look at suing them to return all dues paid by me in the years I had been a member. Mainly because the money could have been better used to put food on the table for the family.

I very much doubt anything has changed and the mismanagement goes on. Sad thing is that, should you really be in an accident or incident, chances are NZ ALPA would leave you to hang.

Not a nice thought to have in the back of your mind when you head off to work

BCF,

I think if you look closely you will find that Freedom is a Mount Cook company operation.

Only by the fact that they are possibly under their AOC or similar, otherwise the two (seperate) companies couldn't be further apart.

StillA
Fair point. Obviously I didn't get all the gossip on all the goings on. One wouldv'e expected that whilst not employed you wouldn't have to pay dues. That kinda sucks.
Although they did look after those dash pilots.
