Jerez course July

Hello, I passed my stage 3 back in January and recently found out I will be on the Jerez course starting in July, assuming I pass my medical later this month. I am wondering if anyone else here is on the same course?

I would say get a good night sleep the night before, give yourself plenty of time to get there. Make sure you know the info booklet as best you can. Also interact with the other candidates, it calms your nerves and also helps you remember you're not in competition with each other.

Height restrictions

Has anyone before been told they are too tall to go to Global, or what height restrictions there are on being an aerodrome/approach controller?

Did you get an option for area/approach/aerodrome? I got the impression it's basically whatever they need at the time, logic suggests there would be more positions for area at any one time but when I asked at CTC they seemed to say it's relatively balanced.

No, you get put on a course based on their needs at the time (or in x months/years ahead based on training timescales) - unless you have a choice of CTC/Jerez or Global. Global will be Aerodrome/Approach, CTC/Jerez could be either but more likely Area based on recent courses and what we've been told on needs.

There's two of us at the moment - do you want to message your number and we can start a WhatsApp group? 😊

Tom, I'm on the same July, Jerez course as yourself! Congrats.

To anyone waiting for a response after passing stage 3, definitely get in touch. I'd waited the 2 weeks they'd told me it'd take, upon ringing them the day after they had courses ready!

TiffLangham 12th March 2019 14:42

Hi all, I've been long-time lurker of this thread but posting now that I can happily say I have passed my Stage 3 and have found out where I'm going.

For fellow lurkers out there wondering about timescales - my Stage 3 was on 5th Feb, I took the call on the 11th Feb with the good news (I was told I should wait up to 15 working days to find out, so I was quite pleased with having to wait just 4), then I took another call on 6th Mar saying I'm off to Global ATS.

I'm on the July course in Gloucester, is anyone else on the same course? Send me a message if so; we can get a group going.

Medical

Hi, has anyone had their medical recently. Got mine next week and was just wondering what to expect.

TiffLangham 12th March 2019 21:41

Thanks StuBob , I hope you hear back soon and best of luck.

Beany1889 re your question about being too tall to go to Global - the only question I was asked was if I was over 6' 2", so I assume that anything above that perhaps qualifies for "too tall".

The tests started out very straightforward and progressed in difficulty, but they really ease you into it and with the right mindset there's no chance you will panic.

Just tried to PM you, but your inbox is full...

Hearing test, sight test, ECG, BP check, urine test, reflexes, height/weight, medical history (yours and family) etc. As this is your initial medical, there may be a few more bits than that to it - it's been a long time since my initial one

Trevor Hannant 13th March 2019 19:14

Pretty much what TMT says although there is also cholesterol check in there (pin prick on the finger for a small blood sample - test only takes a minute or so to give results) and a lung capacity test there also.

thanks for the info. How long does it take to find out if you pass or not? Is it usually pretty immediate or do you have to wait for any test results? I feel pretty confident I should be ok, however you never know until you know.

Trevor Hannant 14th March 2019 08:01

If there are any issues, you’ll know immediately. If you need anything further (specialist assessments, further tests), they’ll tell you there and then.

If you need these, it won’t necessarily stop you starting - there are a couple on our course that still don’t have it...

Congratulations!

I must say, after seeing the NATS infographic about how, on average, only 25 of 3,300 candidates are successful, I'm finding it incredibly encouraging to see just how many people on here are successful. It's almost as if there's a correlation between posting on here and being successful :-)

Once you've booked in a date for stage 3 how easy is it to change to another if a more ideal date comes up? Is it just case of swapping over on the system like it was for stage 2? Thanks in advance!

Is it as specify on the fteJerez website or is it different ?

The Area course is somewhere around 9-10 months at Jerez/CTC combines - or CTC on it's own. You'll come away with a student license at the end of it which you will then take to your unit to start unit training and working towards your full license and validations.

If there's dates free, you should be able to change it similar to how you would have done Stage 2.

AnakinXCIV 19th March 2019 13:07

Hi everyone, I've been lurking since I applied and now I've got a date for my stage 3 assessment I thought I'd join in! For those who have their course dates - I know that they place you for training where they need/think they will need people but do you get a chance to give a preference? Just out of curiosity since I do have a preference but it's not like I'd turn anything they offered me down! If I get selected of course (fingers crossed!) :)

Reading through the recent posts it appears I was in the same group as you (The bald guy crazy enough to travel from Sydney), so congratulations!

I have personally received the stage 3 email already so I'd definitely get onto the recruitment email and let them know, having spoken to them over the last two days they are very quick to reply and help out.

All the best for the future and perhaps we'll cross paths again sometime.

Hi sir, good to know you're here too, I did what you advised and I have my stage 3 on Thursday 21st - how about you? Hoping you get through. I know that they are looking for a high volume of new ATCs this year so the odds are in our favour.

I share your question about Jerez accommodation - my partner lives with me and would have to cohabit with parents again if he can't accompany me to Spain! Still 3 months doesn't seem that long though...

boxface from what I've been told, Jerez is a 6 month placement and that is what others previously have detailed. Gloucester and CTC appear to be the shorter basic courses.

MEDICAL query - does anyone know or gone through the medical with a history of medical issues? I admit my health history is pretty much non-existent but in the interests of disclosure I detailed that I had been diagnosed to suffer migraines when I was a kid, some 20 years ago. I've looked everywhere to find further info on this issue in relation to Class 3 ATCO medical clearance and there doesn't appear to be specific reference to it being an issue. However I have received my medical date from NATS who inform me I may require a specialist neurological report relating to this historical issue?

Has anyone else come across this with highlighting previous medical issues or incidents?

I was asked to bring paperwork regarding my health issues when attending the medical.
The doctor at Swanwick seemed happy with what I've provided but he said that he'll speak with the CAA and they'll decide if it's enough to give me the medical certificate.
The day after my medical I received an email saying that I'll have to see a neurologist at Gatwick (waiting for the date of the appointment now).

I suggest you take whatever paperwork you've got regarding the migraines with you. It could be enough or you could be referred to a neurologist for a further review.

Hope it helps.

Hi, long-time lurker here. I've just got my placement - going to Gloucester in July!
I saw a couple of others have posted that they're on the same course, is there a whatsapp group I can join?

Btw, did you guys get a confirmation email about your placement? I got a phone call but was wondering if there'd be an email with more details coming out?

AustralianSam 22nd March 2019 19:09

Got the call today at work to let me know that I'm off to GTC in July! Very glad to have gotten through all the interviews unscathed.

Is there a Whatsapp group floating around for the July course that I could possibly join?

Yes, you'll get an email - then several more emails with pre-learning to do, forms to complete and send back etc.

Passed my stage 2 assessment today. We started with 6 (10 no shows!) and were down to 3 by the time we got to DART.

The assessor said the last of the current process stage 2 assessments will be this week and the final stage 3 dates are throughout May. Everything else is on the new system which goes live April 1st but she recommended waiting a week or two for the teething problems to be worked through before applying.

Whris 29th March 2019 13:21

Another lurker here!

Just had my Stage 3 interview on Wednesday. So waiting to hear back. How were you notified; email or phone?

Just had the call. I got through stage 3! Over the moon!
Just waiting on a placement now.

TaelS 3rd April 2019 07:39

Hi guys,
After not getting it on my first attempt with what they call a nearly miss, I finally got it and couldn't be happier :) So for those of you in a similar scenario, focus on the big picture regardless timescales and keep trying!

Anyone in the CTC course (in Hampshire) starting in July? (I've read here a few talking about a Jerez and a Gloucester course for July, but nothing about CTC?). Any Whatsapp/Facebook group created already?

TaelS 3rd April 2019 09:51

Awesome, thanks Hannah!

If that's true, I could have saved myself the stress of going through the old process last week! :O But I wasn't going to throw away the chance of having two attempts at it. Fortunately I got through stage 2, so that's no longer relevant.

But, surely it's not in NATS's interest to move the goalposts too much in the direction of making things easier, is it?
