CV is right, ICAO level 4 is the minimum to hold a rating, NATS require their staff to attain level 5 as a minimum.

Let's face it, you want to work in the UK, least you can do is perfect the language.

Pretty sure your countrymen demand near perfect French despite the requirement for all controlling to be done in English (unless you are Air France of course)

RossGeller 17th August 2012 19:29

whitelighter, or swiss ;) Indeed, I agree, actually I think ICAO 4 is not enough to be honest. Well, my countrymen don't speak french. Some of us do, but it's the consequence of hard work ;)

initial online test

Hey guys, could anyone help me?

I've applied to NATS a couple of weeks ago, still waiting for the reply, could anyone explain how is the initial online test before stage 1?

Thanks in advance and good luck

Frenchmax 20th August 2012 08:00

Whitelighter,
I find absolutely normal that NATS asks a very good level of English. Its a very important think especially when you are responsible for "people life".

I just try to know If NATS is a bit flexible or not regarding English at the time of selection. Maybe NATS can judge someone able to undertake the training even if his English is not perfect. Then this people will have at least one years to achieve a ICAO level 5.....

I reiterate my request: Does someone have the NATS documents (Test material and NATS_Practice_Leaflet2)

Thank you

I'm training as an ATCO in Australia at the moment. I assume it's the same with NATS trainees; believe me when I say you don't want to be worrying about anything other than your course curriculum during your training, let alone trying to get your English up to level 5. Think two exams per week, and a lot of it is rote learning of stuff you've never dealt with and won't until you get into the sim. It's a foreign language to a lot of native English speakers...

If you think getting into the job is hard, wait till you start training. And I'm not saying that as an old fart. I never studied this hard when I was doing my degree...

Kimmikins 20th August 2012 08:28

Got my invitation to the online test on Friday :uhoh: Have been at work so will be doing in on Tuesday; I have nooo idea what it consists of, so into the abyss I go!

finchyp1 20th August 2012 12:39

kimmikins. Good luck!
- I am however, exceedingly jealous as I haven't heard anything yet, (which I appreciate isn't a no either). Has anyone else heard back from nats??

sambatc 20th August 2012 15:40

Kimmikins, when did you submit your application?

Good news though....things are moving

Kimmikins 20th August 2012 18:14

I submitted my application on the day it re-opened, something like the 22nd July? I think they're incredibly swamped with applications, and the old adage of "no new is good news" probably applies.

sambatc 21st August 2012 08:47

ah... well, me too, so hopefully I'll be getting that email soon as well....

mts1 21st August 2012 12:22

Same here... Waiting for invitation test!. I applied some time around the second fortnight of july.

Kimmikins 21st August 2012 14:28

Well, it's not a personality questionnaire like I thought it'd be! Only takes 10mins tops, including the practice test. It's one of the tests that used to be on the Day One assessment. I won't spoilt it, in case there are different ones for each applicant.

I hope you all get your tests soon, I'm intrigued to see how you all found it, and which ones you had!

sambatc 21st August 2012 14:36

Kimmikins - if it was the basic checking test, then nothing has changed - NATS used to tell you that's what the first online test is on their FAQ, and also give you examples on the PDFs they linked to.

Those links seem to have disappeared in the new NATS website, so I won't explain what the basic checking tests are, but there are details back in the rest of this 400 page thread

Kimmikins 21st August 2012 18:52

Ah, I never saw where they listed that as being the first online test. When I was looking around the careers section of the site, this was never on there! As it's been removed, along with all the previous downloads, I don't want to be at risk of sending people down the garden path. But yes, for me it was the Checking test.

sambatc 21st August 2012 20:49

well, do let us know how quickly they invite you to stage 1, and whether there are dates available!

Kimmikins 24th August 2012 15:57

Received the invite today. My heart is racing and the nerves have definitely kicked in! The dates are for the next 3 weeks, the first one is next friday.

Has anybody else heard anything?

Iceman_1223 24th August 2012 20:35

No Test Document Material or NATS Practice Leaflet. Please help?

Hello all. Have been a frequent visitor to this rather wonderful forum for some time now but I have a dilemma that I'm hoping somebody can help me with. So I registered :)

I received my invite to Stage 1 of the selection tests for the Trainee Air Traffic Controller today (I've been waiting since 2010!). Am booked in for the tests on Friday 31st Aug 2012 and am looking to start preparation now. The problem is, however, that the resources that I need to practice with and study are dead links. I cannot access either the 'Test Document Material' or the 'NATS Practice Leaflet'. When clicked, the hyperlinks simply take me to the NATS website and display a rather disheartening 'Page Not Found'.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Can anyone advise me where I might be able to find these essential documents?

I've called NATS to let them know but, understandably, nobody is home at this time of day and I'd rather not be waiting until after the bank holiday weekend. That's valuable practice time!

Thanks so much in anticipation.

cregganite 24th August 2012 22:20

Heard Today

After waiting so long, found out today that got through to stage 3 assessment.. all dates seem to be in Fareham and also the link doesnt seem to work to practice papers anyone else having problems?

conc1845 25th August 2012 10:35

Aye, I've received mine (after about 18 months of waiting). None of the links to the support material are working though. Did you manage to get the documents? I still have mine from 2 years ago but I'm pretty sure some info will be outdated by now!

Edit: Tuesday 11/09 @ 10:45am - all set.
Going to email HR now and see what the crack is about the links to the files.

Kimmikins 28th August 2012 09:35

Did you ever receive a response from HR regarding the missing material?

I've been trawling through the back pages of this thread, and it's freaking me out a little bit! So, from what I've read;
  • S1 still has the diagramming, spatial reasoning and the materials test
  • What is the operations test? Not sure this was in the last time I went through the stages :\
  • Definitely learn Speed, Distance, Time calculations (or dust off the cobwebs for the brain, in my case)
  • Learn some distances for airports, or get a little grip on European Geography?
Like I said, still trawling and reading and learning. Seems a lot quieter on this thread now...nobody heard anything yet?

sambatc 28th August 2012 10:28

seems like just a handful of you from the responses on here. Plenty more of us sat here waiting, getting more and more jealous by the day...!

Kimmikins 28th August 2012 10:36

I'll be intrigued to see how many of us there are on Monday then :bored:

finchyp1 28th August 2012 12:07

Still waiting.
Still wondering if my application has been lost.
Still telling myself it will all be fine.
Still checking my e-mails more often than is healthy!

conc1845 28th August 2012 17:59

No word from HR yet but this is the first working day of potentially 10 they have to respond so I'm not surprised.

Going to be a case of using my old (probably outdated) info to re-familiarise myself with the gist & fill in any blanks with new documents once I get a reply (this is also why I booked Sept. 11 instead of 3rd - means I have to pull 2 sick days instead of 1 but will put me in a better position).

lkrd1 29th August 2012 08:52

Anybody else received online selection tests? I applied on 22nd July and still heard nothing? Hmmmm

MattWT 29th August 2012 09:59

hi lkrd1,

I applied back on the 9th July, had the confirmation email but nothing since. Sent HR an email last Tuesday - 21st and they haven't got back to me on that yet.

tonycrfc1 29th August 2012 10:13

Im the same

I applied about 2 weeks ago

Not heard anything.....

Hmmmmmmm

whats HR's email?

lkrd1 29th August 2012 11:29

Hmmm this is making no sense, some people offered tests etc and others that aren't. I had an auto reply from HR that said they are reviewing the situation for stages 1 and 2 on 4th sept. It wouldn't surprise me if they put the applications on hold again....

negativeG 29th August 2012 11:32

Just received an invitation to the online test. Applied approx. 2 weeks after applications opened.

lkrd1 29th August 2012 11:36

NegativeG that's exactly the problem, some people are getting tests others that applied around the same time aren't! I have a very strange feeling that they are massively over subscribed again and if your not given tests by 4th we will end up waiting a lot longer once again!

JackRalston 29th August 2012 11:56

Invite to stage 1

I just got an email to invite my to book my stage 1 test. I applied back in February 2011. I had put my application on hold due to final year University commitments. Very surprised to have received an email to book my stage 1 now but unfortunately due to work committments at Manchester Airport, I can't really get the time off and revise for a date WITHIN the next 7 days (bit short notice if you ask me). Hopefully they can understand if I put it on hold, would still love to go into ATC.

tonycrfc1 29th August 2012 14:30

NegitiveG ,

when did you apply what date?
I applied on 14/08 and not heard anything back

I applied previously last year and got to first stage interview but due to work commitment I could make the interview
(work wont be stopping me now)

chrisbeckett2004 29th August 2012 14:41

I just got an email through confirming my online selection test too.. I applied on 7th August so i reckon people will be hearing very shortly if they aint already!

tonycrfc1 29th August 2012 14:44

I emailed HR there, they replied back to me within 5 minutes ha
still considering my application and will contact me soon.

Is it true the interviews are taking place downsouth only?
No prestwick??

lkrd1 29th August 2012 14:49

Well this is a complete wounder, I applied on 9th july and not heard anything...getting a little impatient now. And I emailed HR around 3 times the last 2 months, still not a thing back... :ugh:

tonycrfc1 29th August 2012 15:14

email hr.servicesrecruitmentatco@nats.co.uk

just now and im sure they should reply

MattWT 29th August 2012 15:15

just had a reply from them

sambatc 29th August 2012 15:43

at least more and more people seem to be getting invites every day. I'm sure they'll get round to us all shortly.... :ok:

lkrd1 29th August 2012 15:48

Yeh well fingers crossed it will come through. I emailed them this morning but had no reply, guessing they having hundreds of emails and if you get a reply you are just one of the lucky ones. Just sitting, waiting and hoping for a selection test now.

Gilley 29th August 2012 16:55

Just got my email for the online test ....... scary!!
