getting to whitley/swanwick
Hey i have my stage 2 next tuesday flying in from NI the day before. Probably staying in Southampton. Is it easy enough to travel from Southampton to test venue by taxi or train? I cannot hire a car
Any advice would be greatfully received. |
hi all,
I have my S1 at Preswick on the 10th September, give me a shout if you are heading along that day aswell. I have already sat the appitude tests for pilot in the airforce and got a pretty good score so have some idea of concentration levels and general skill levels required. I was told by a mate who works with NATS that eventhough they are still putting people through recruitment etc that they have upped the pass rates to silly levels and only hiring a select few for the next year or so. any truth in these rumours? |
@ treebeard04
I'd believe that, I sat my stage 1 a couple of weeks ago and got through the first two tests (ATC & numeracy) and took the remaining two tests (cubes & diagramming). I was quietly confident and thought I had done well enough to get through but got an email saying I hadn't. Can't just go off what one person thinks I know, but Im just giving my opinion. Best of luck |
Treebeard, i'll be there on the 10th as well.
Been reading these forums quite a bit now and i'm starting to brick myself just a tad. Therefore, i'll be visiting these forums very very rarely up till S1, feel free to PM me with whatever. Could go over some more sample papers if you can find any, i've not had much luck :ugh: |
To Treebeard and Thomolithic, I'll be at Prestwick on the 10th aswell, will see you guys there!
I have been practising s/d/t sums and reading the document with all the basic ATC stuff over and over so far. I have been using this website Speed Distance Time | Test to practise my s/d/t and am getting pretty quick... Although could someone confirm if this is of a similar standard to the actual test i.e. are the real questions harder, easier, roughly the same? (By the way if you hit refresh it generates a new set of questions each time) I think I seen someone post that ALL questions in the stage 1 selection day are multiple choice? Is this right? Also have any of you guys found anything on the net to practise for the cubes and logic diagrams? I've been struggling to find freebie practise material for this part of the test so far. Either way good luck to you guys for the tests on the 10th! |
ATC application
I applied for ATC yesterday and have today received an email asking me to complete an online test? Could anybody give me a bit of info as to what to expect,i.e. do I need a lot of time to do it? Is it hard or is it more of a personality questionaire?
Thank you :O |
same here, ill be there on the 10th @1300. Though tavelling from Belfast so going to be a long day for me lol
|
Hi all,
This is my first post in this thread. I'm Armenian but living in Madrid since 2000. I tried to apply for ATC selection here in Spain but unfortunately, two months ago they changed the requirements and any person who isn't of European Union nationality, is automatically out of selection process :\. I decided to try my luck with NATS and I have my Stage 1 on the 10th at Prestwick as well. Wish everyone good luck!!! |
Start Date
I've just heard that my start date will be for the aerodrome course in July 2011. I had originally heard that I should expect to start in January at my interview so I'm quite disappointed that its now going to be an even longer wait till July. Has anyone else heard anything?
GavDarv |
@gavdarv
When did you do your medical and send it along? July 2011 would be perfect for me as I could complete my MEng in case anything goes wrong with the training. When did you specify that you wanted to do Aero? I would too but nobody has asked me for a preference yet. |
@cjshields
I passed my medical the first week in July, a few weeks after I found out I had been accepted! I never specified aero thats just the course they've given me, quite happy with that though. When did you do your medical? GavDarv |
@gavdarv
I passed mine last Friday (Aug 20th) but I got accepted and filled in my security questionairre on the 6th of July. It could be that the delay for your start date was pending security clearance, whereas mine may be already cleared (wishful thinking maybe but I don't like the thought of having to wait 6 weeks). Has anyone else had a chance to specify Aero or Area or does everyone get streamed into whichever course they are best suited to? I would much prefer Aero. |
I passed my medical in April and still don't have a start date!
|
Good luck to you guys doing your stage 1 at Prestwick :) its really handy to get to, taxis outside the terminal know where it is, was #3.50 when i went tho its about 1.5 mile walk. If your early your probably better to stay in the airport to chill as at the Prestwick building, we had to wait in the reception area, one guy needed to go to the toilet but had to wait till they were ready to take us all through due to security lol.
Yeh, the 4 tests are multiple choice, but answers can be similar. I couldnt find much at all on cubes, just an example put somewhere in this thread somewhere and a few online google searchs threw some very easy examples lol. Didnt really get anythin on the diagrammatic reasoning either. The first online test you get when you first apply is a checking test where it gives you a time limit in which you have to select the matching number from 5 options as is displayed on the left hand side. After every 5 questions the time gets reduced. Just completed that Bio Personality test and I gotta say it was nasty, askin some crazy ass questions lol... hope its not too long a wait! |

Hi all
I have just completed my online assessment and i have been invited to S1, had to choose a slot between November and December and i went with December in Fareham, has anyone been given a slot around that time, it just seems a long time to wait :bored: |
@SKOS hey, yeh there were 98 questions of which you had to say whether you Strongly Agreed, Agreed, Disagreed or Strongly disagreed with them. The first 30 or so were handy enough about your self, but then it goes on to ask about how you assess other people psychologically and how peoples behaviours effect you an how you effect them, sorry i cant remember exactly but it was nuts stuff that I had no real idea how to answer. Lots of stuff on how you view rules and regulations too lol. But got the invite to stage 2 so really happy :)
There were dates available in oct, nov an dec, does anyone know if it looks bad to select a date in Dec, which is 4 months away? got a chance to head to asia for a couple months and would love to take it before i settle. Thanks again |
hi guys
i have my first stage on the 23rd of september in fareham, anyone else booked on these dates |
SKOS,
Sounds a load of horse!!!!! to me. Surely you can only assess people psychologically if you have a 'psychology' degree. :E Sharmanat0r, Best of luck. :ok: |
SKOS,
Could that be 'Simple Knowledge Organization Systems' by any chance? You ask quite a few questions on this forum, but have yet to share with us any of your own experiences of the 'NATS interview process'. Go ahead, over.........:E |
Hey folks, booked my stage 2 for December 6th, anyone else going then? I know its agesssss away lol!
I'm just looking into flights and accommodation, gonna fly into Bournsmouth airport but need to stay 2 nights due to flight times, but im pretty broke and was hoping someone who knew the area a bit might know a dirt cheap place to stay not too far away ;) thanks in advance! The Bournemouth college is just right beside the airport? |
"The Bournemouth college is just right beside the airport? "
Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't your stage 2 at Fareham which is about 40 miles away? |

assessment day one
hi,
i juts got an email from NATS telling me to book an assessment day, can anyone help me on how i can be really prepared for it and what kind of questions might be asked. Also am trying to decide when to book my test how long do you think it will take to revise everything, am not sure if to take the 10sep assessment. thank you and plzzzzzzzzz help!!!! |
@ dcp359/sportzbar
Have just got back off holiday and done the personality thing and booked my stage 3. End of November at Swanwick was the earliest available without going to Scotland. Have you booked yours?? @WbATC Hope yours went well. |
I have my stage 3 at prestwick on the 29th september. I have a few questions.
Is it necessary to arrange a visit of a site before the interview? Is there anyone out there who didnt visit a site and got through? What tests do you have to do at the medical? If I am not particularly fit is it something to worry about? Any other details about stage 3 in general would be much appreciated. Kind regards |
I would strongly recommend that you book a site visit before your stage 3. This way you can really see what the job is about and it will really help you answer some of the questions. Plus it shows that you are willing to go that little bit further for the job i.e. you've used your own initiative and done your own research. Not only will it really aid you in the interview it is also a really good opportunity and lots of fun! I went to Heathrow which was just awesome! I got to plug in and listen to all communications for as long as I wanted. I also had a tour of swanwick the day before which was good for asking last minute questions.
As for the medical - you aren't required to do any fitness things other than blowing into a tube to measure your peak flow. Your height and weight are also taken but I wouldnt worry too much about being fit - I'm not and it didnt affect me! |
Ok so how would I go about organising a visit? Would it be more useful to visit a tower or Swanwick?
Also is there now no technical element to stage 3? So is there any point in reading books on Air Traffic Control? |
Jonathan, you sound well keen! Sort yourself a visit off your own back and do some reading. It's definitely worth it, stage 3 is tough.
|
@sharmanat0r Hey, I've got my stage 2 on the 8th of this month - i.e. 1 week (ish). I've bought the SkyTest disc and and am really struggling to understand the often contradictory instructions of the SDM test :ugh:, which I have basically given up on practising, as well as the co-ordinate system test, where I'm finding it takes me at least 10 seconds to read and process the question. My available answer time? 10 seconds...
Anyone also possess this abomination of a piece of software who can give me some advice? Cheers, Fred |
@ flaming jupiter
I saw some dates available in October for Prestwick but managed to hold out until Swanwick became available on 24 November. |
@ sportzbar
will see you there then! |
just a quick question, would practising on an atc-simulator be of any help
thanks |
Nats interview process
Dear all,
I am a spanish guy really interested in attending the selection process of Nats college in bmouth. I am really motivated to do this but at the same time I fear to fail the selection process for the difficulty of all of this. This is why, I would like to ask you a few questions regarding Nats selection process: Do you know more or less how long the selection process last? because I think I am going to attend the first stage in january...then, I guess I would know the results of all the stages by the end of january already. By the way, do you know the dates to attend the selection process in bmouth? Does Nats college allocate you automatically to some airport to work as an ATCO upon you have finished the course at Nats college in bmouth? Do you know more or less how much money It would cost me, in case I passed through the selection process, the whole course at Nats college? Thanks so much in advance Regards, Michael |
Stage 1 Questions!!
hello/Hola!!
hi eveybody hope all is good!! on the 10th of sept i will be attending the stage one of the recruitment process and il quite sure there r many of them who attended the stage one and has gone through...i basically know what sort of wuestions will be coming and if it is possible please give me some hints on wat questions will be coming or will be asked from the 25 Pages of the test material they hve give... anyone who has already been through stage one please let me know what squestions were asked...thanx a bnillion fpor the help (in advance)...oh yes and the dress code ? :D thanx alot!!! |
I have a quick question regarding the NATS Stage One Assessment as i've noticed that the recruitment process seems to have changed slightly since i last considered applying to become a Trainee ATCO. As i understand it the Stage One Assessment now begins with the ATC Test followed by a numerical reasoning test.
Can anyone confirm whether or not the numerical reasoning test covers mathematics in general or if it is solely restricted to speed/distance/time calculations? Also, are questions given in both mph/miles and kmph/km? If i have understood the NATS website those who are successful at these two stages are then invited to take the spacial and diagramatic tests. Is this correct? Thanks in advance. |
Nats Stage 1 - Shl
I have my NATS Stage 1 assessment coming up soon.
I have been onto the SHL website and find the example tests difficult to do without using a calculator. Could someone who has recently been through the stage 1 process explain wether or not the stage 1 tests are anything like the SHL tests? |
