In relation to the S/D/T calculations, I am not sure how much importance there is on converting between Nautical Miles and Standard Miles.
As you would work in the unit of measurement given in the question itself. So if the distance is expressed as NM, the answer will be in NM and Vice Versa. The obvious exception to the rule will be the ones asking for the conversion between the two measurements of distance. Having said that, I haven't done stage one so am not completely up to speed with the types of questions asked. So if someone can correct me, that would be most appriciated, mainly so i can get practicing lol |
Binbrain,
Thanks for the help, apparently they've "reset my application" and I've recieved the invitation for the online tests, so I'll do them in the morning when I'm a little more alert. Thanks for the info on the proceedure, it is indeed my second application, I got through all the stages until the interview, and basically I needed better examples so hopefully with another year of working I'll be able to impress more. I was hoping I'd be able to avoid doing all the tests again, especially with me living in the North East, it's quite a drive to get to any NATS centre, and a really long one to get down to the CTC for final two stages. Like you said though, hopefully worth it in the end! Where abouts are you in this application, and what did you fail on last time if you don't mind me asking. Paul |
so paulfoley30 what an u tell us about the process??? :O :zzz: :ok:
Thanks in Advance...LOL |
Speed distance time calculations
Hey guys
Im pretty cool with doing the speed distance time stuff.... however, i get stuck when some crazy division is needed..... E.G - At 9 mph, how long does it take to travel 6 miles? Now, I know that the answer is 40MPH ( I used a calculator.. ) however, how on earth do you find the mile per minute in your head, as this requires you to do 9/60 (0.15)..... If anyone has a really simple way of doing this, please share. I have stage one on the 5/11/10!!!! thanks |
6 miles at 9 mph....?
speed = distance/time time = distance/speed time = 6/9 hours = 2/3 hours....or 40mins.... |
Im a total idiot.......
|
In fact.... another one... where i find it hard ( not on a calculator , but in my head )
At 12 mph, how far do you travel in 3 hours and 40 mins? That is then 12 x 220, which comes to 2640 Then 2640/60 = 44 miles... I can do it, but just not in my head... can someone write down how to get this answer an easier way??? Thanks! |
Speed,distance time calculations
hope this would help,it depends on the choices it should be less than an hour,since travelling at 9miles/hour at 6miles.but if the choices are somewhat all less than an hour,we should do sambartran's method if estimation doesn't apply :O, but i'm still studying on documents,hope all of you post some helpful advise.thanks-DJ1425.

12mph
3hours 40 mins.. 3 hours is gonna get you 36 miles, right? then 40 mins will get you another 2/3rds of your 12 miles per hour. So 8 44 being the total :) |
I hate speed distance time!!!!!!!! Its all about the way you do it more than anything... i want my mum
|
@12mph it takes 36miles in 3 hours.
40/60 2/3 of 12 = 8 36+8 = 44miles |
Hey.... right... I have the distance ones cracked....
However, can someone apply the same logic to this time one... At 18 mph, how long does it take to travel 30 miles? so... 1hr is 18 miles... leaves 12 miles... Again i can do this on the calculator as 30/18 x 60 to get the answer but since NATS are horrible human beings... we cant use them ( Lol ).... Thanks again.... appreciated! |
18/3 = 6 making 6 miles every 20 mins because a third of an hour is 20mins... so the remaining 12 miles is (12/2= 6) two times 20 mins making 40mins. Add that to the 1 hour = 1hr 40mins
Hope that helps :ok: |
30 x 60 = 1800
1800/18 = 100 :) |
Thanks guys
Can anyone, put down an easy formlua for each ? ie one for speed, one for distance and one for time? Just nice and simple, which I can apply to each one! Im actually good at maths.... lol just takes me a bit to get into the way of doing things :( Thanks again |
now everyone for your Homework please learn the 6-TIMES-TABLE... :D
|
Hi guys I know this sounds like a stupid question and I was wondering if any one knows the pass percentage on the internet test thing? been doing it and seem to be doing ok on first 2/3 then badly the last two getting two or three wrong each time. Any advice? Please
|
EIRE .... Lol... I know ALL my times tables! lol.... its just the METHOD thats screwing me up...:(
Thanks for the help though guys Appreciated |
Lol i know:p
Well ive just done the airforce test... ok took a me a little while but got 9 right ( as opposed to like 1 a few days ago ).... so getting better! |
stage 1
Hello guys, i'm taking the exams at stage 1 on 28th this month and, to be honest, i'm a bit lost 'cos i don't know what the first phase looks like. If somebody could tell what kind of exercises are part of that stage, i'd be really thankful.
|
Schneider, if you look back through the last few pages theres lots of information on the Stage One questions, also on the invite to the stage one theres a link to information about the tests.
A simple search will do the trick :ok: |
thank you for your colaboration, but, the thing is, there are more than 300 pages about NATS interviews and I thought somebody here, who is familiar with this forum, would know some specific page or even websites where i can find information about the first stage.

Anyone got their stage one in Prestwick on the 8th October? Getting nervous now.
Feel fine on the SDT calculations, a little nervous about the ATC material, studying it like mad, has anyone got an example of one of the questions? The next two tests (If I make it that far), I am a little worried about the cube one, and quietly confident on the diagramming. Nervous times ahead.... How's everyone else doing? Thanks Sam |
paulfoley
Its my 2nd application too, and I also made it through to the interview last time. Apparently, my interview was average and so I passed that. My problem was that I didn't speak up enough in the group exercise. I tried to gauge it to be in the middle somewhere; not too quiet, not saying too much. Thought I'd managed, but obviously not. So I've spent the last year waiting for the day to come that I could apply again, and have been trying to improve my interview technique. Really pulling out all the stops, as this is my dream job! I know what you mean about a long drive, its 5 hrs for me coming from Manchester! But I'm booked onto stage 1 on the 14th Oct at the ATC college in Bournemouth. How about you? Must have done your online tests by now? binbrain |
to paulfoley and binbrain,
does it mean,it doesn't guarantee if you passed stages 1 & 2 i thought it's formality only after you get through,it's really hard, i really want to be part of NATS coz it's been my dream job. any pointers? Thanks, DJ1425 |
No DJ, its certianly not a formality. The compotency interview itself is rigorus and plenty of people fail at this stage.
|
Hi Binbrain,
I'm from Morecambe about an hour away from Manchester. You should have booked at Prestwick, surely that's much closer than Bournemouth? Sam |
to ANewHope-Ful,
Thanks for the reminder,any advise on how to prepare for this as this is really my dream job and to be part of NATS is truly a dream come true for me. hope some of you can give us pointers. Thanks, DJ1425 |
@Sammy H
Theres only about 20 mins difference between the 2, so seeing as I've been down south before, figured I go where I'm more familiar. @DJ1425 There is a little preparation you can do. Practice your interview technique!! They'll ask about times where you've gone wrong with something, and what you did (e.g. did you get flustered/work through it/learn from it etc), and they'll also ask for examples of when you've been been successful at something, responsible, creative etc. Its an in-depth interview, mine lasted just over an hour. However, dont worry about if you've said enough, if they want more info from you, they ask questions to guide you, so they'll get all they need. As for the group exercise, you can't really prepare. They'll set you a task on the day to complete whilst they observe you. You've just got to bounce off the grou you're in, and try to speak up without taking over. Hope this helps, binbrain |
@binbrain,
thanks for the pointers.hope we can all get through.i'm really looking forward to be part of NATS.watch pushing tin :) quite old movie but it's about ATC. DJ1425 |
I wouln't mention that in the interview - its rubbish!!

"I've got a hole, give me a plane"
|
hi all...1st post :)
I tried to submit my application online earlier, but the website tells me there has been an error, and to try again later. I've been back a few times to no avail and am getting worried... calling the phone number on the NATS website, it just goes straight to voicemail right away and i'm reluctant to leave a message before I've left the website for a while in case I do actually just need to give it a bit of time before re-attempting my application. has anyone else had their application scuppered by a website error?! :ugh: |
I didn't have any problems submitting my application, however, that was a few weeks ago and i have noticed that they appear to have updated their website quite significantly over the past few days so if you're having problems i would assume they may be having some teething problems with the upgrade.
On the other hand, for those who have attended Stage One i have a few questions i was hoping someone would be able to answer. I have my Stage One assessment coming up in the next few weeks and was wanting to find out more information about the four tests which applicants are required to undertake. How many questions do the tests consist of and are these carried out under similar circumstances as the vast majority of aptitude tests in that you are given a very limited amount of time to complete them? Does the numerical reasoning test solely consist of S/D/T calculations and orientation based around points of the compass? I apologise if these questions have been asked previously but having looked through the vast majority of the post i can't seem to find a definitive answer since the recruitment process appeared to have altered slightly not so long ago. Thanks in advance. |
'lo all,
How long does the whole selection process normally take? The reason I ask is that I heard it normally takes 3 months, and I'm graduating from uni in June. If I [hopefuly] get through to the end, would NATS let me wait until June to start? Or should I wait until early next year to apply? |
Sam,
I applied in February this year and just received my course allocation in mid September. It takes a good 5-6 months to get through the 3 stages, online tests and medical (although I've had to have extra reports sent). My advice would be apply with about 3-4 months of your course left to go at Uni. I was in my final year as well and taking 2 days off to go for Stage 2 and Stage 3 isn't an ideal situation if you have dissertations and other deadlines to hit. I've also found that some gentle prodding is sometimes needed to get NATS/CAA to reply to things, or to find "lost paperwork". |
In addition to my previous post -
Is anyone else here going to be heading to NATS College on 4th Jan on the 226 Aerodrome course? If so, PM me. Also - How flexible is the course structure at college? eg. I'm allocated Aerodrome, but i've noticed you can do joint Aerodrome/Approach. Is that determined by performance or is that just business requirements? I'd like to do something challenging and obviously have the best earning potential so what's the best way to go about that? *Edit* Found a facebook group for Aerodrome 226 |
Any final tips for stage one, the nerves really starting to hit me now!
Bring on Friday. |
Sam I Am. NATS are generally very accomodating when it comes to things like people in their final year of Uni or for people in jobs which require long peiods of notice before they can leave so you could quite happily apply now if you want. You also neve know how long you would have to wait until you get a course start date as this is usually several months after being accepted in the first place.
|
looking back over recent posts, people are being given start dates of October 2011....I think there's going to be a wait regardless of whether you ask for it or not Sam!
