Are the sdt questions really as easy as the ones on this site? -

Thanks for your advice all. I'll apply now while I have a relatively free timetable this semester. Hopefuly I won't have to do any tests/interviews during January exams.

sambatc 6th October 2010 07:55

just be grateful you don't have to take a day off work every time you have to go to a stage! If only I'd thought of doing this while I was at uni...

I found out this morning that I passed the initial online test I took yesterday :D and I've booked myself in for Stage 1 at Bournemouth on 12th November :ok:

Personally I think that's too far away :( but the only doable option that was closer is this friday!

nevermind eh! :D

anyone else at Bournemouth on Nov 12th?

Sammy H 6th October 2010 18:39

Hi all,

Got my stage one on Friday in Prestwick. Just setting up my satnav and think it may be out of date.

The postcode for Prestwick isn't coming up. Has anyone else experienced this? I have e-mailed Nikki at HR so hopefully she will get in touch tomorrow.

There is a setting to locate me to 'Prestwick Airport' so I should be ok. Is it hard to find when you get there?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks
Sam

AS1988 6th October 2010 19:13

KA92NR - Atlantic House is the place you're looking for.

The vehicle entrance is around the back of the main building, past warehouse buildings. *You may see articulated trucks around, it's near that area*

Once you find the gate just follow it to the control booth and say to the guy you're here for stage 1 assessment. You'll then go to the security booth, get a pass and then drive round to the car park.

If in doubt there are usually a lot of cars heading for the car park if you're going early morning. Easy enough just to follow them.

Crazy Voyager 6th October 2010 19:49

We'll just miss eachother, I'm there in the 11th. And so far I seem to be the only one from here doing the tests on the 11th, to bad I was hoping for some company (will be sleeping there the 10th-11th so I have some time to spend :p ).

Speedb1rd 6th October 2010 22:44

Hey Everyone,

Newbie alert! :)
Have booked my stage 1 for Oct. 28th at Fareham, anyone else booked?

More PPRuNe bedtime reading for me....:8

Prestwick Friday 8th October

@Sammy H

Hey Sammy, I live about half an hour from Prestwick. Im booked on the 5/11/2010 stage one there, but my flat mate Jamie is going to the same one as you. The place is really easy to find. Just get there in plenty of time and ask someone in the general vicinity of the airport and you will be alright.

Good luck for stage one, oh and feel free to post on here what it was like and some example questions ( I can get this off my flat mate, but he stoopid! lol :p )

Good luck!!!

28th? that wasn't one of my options....would have snapped it up if it had been!

NDW 7th October 2010 13:27

Afternoon All,

I am booking mine today for the 3rd December at Prestwick!!

Best of luck to those of you who have theirs in October & November and let us all know how you get on!! :ok:

All the best

kwagga 7th October 2010 17:37

sambatc, I am booked on the 12th @ 09:00. Are you staying nearby the night before or driving down in the morning?

I thought that was a good date, but just want to get it done now i think!

Can anyone please advise on how important the Aircraft statistics in the test materials are.

Thanks

AS1988 7th October 2010 18:42

Kwagga,

The aircraft statistics are there for a reason which might not be apparent right now but trust me, it's beneficial to have a rough idea of aircraft size and what types of aircraft fly where.

I'm not going to give much away but suffice to say it'd be good to know what sort of aircraft would be used for a transcontinental flight as opposed to a regional flight from Newcastle to London, for example.

Since I studied Aeronautical Engineering i've always had a big interest in any type of aircraft and generally know most of the models inside out, so these stats weren't surprising to me. It's worth reading over them once or twice though. You wont need too much detail, they wont ask you how many seats a SAAB 2000 has for example.

kwagga 7th October 2010 20:19

AS1988,

Thanks thats good info.

I have relatives in Christchurch (so annoyed the college is leaving Hurn!!) so I'll be staying there the night before... it's a 50min drive across to Fareham so I'll be leaving nice and early to make sure I'm good for 9!

Can anyone offer any advice about the distances between cities portion of the test? There's no mention of it in the test material NATS provide.... any guidelines would be appreciated!

AnnaColes 9th October 2010 13:10

I've got my stage 1 14th October in Bournemouth, pretty scared if I'm being honest!

One thing I'm wondering though is how long is the paper for the S/D/T test? I'm assuming it's the 'basic checking' test? I've been practicing online and can do them, but I'm starting to worry that the time limit for this test is going to be really short and I won't complete them. Are they looking for speed or accuracy?

Any help would be great thanks :) Also, has anyone found any extra practice examples for cubing or diagramming?

Thanks :)

online application/test

sambatc,

congrats on passing your online test.:D

im new on here and have struggled to find any recent info on the online test itself. i.e. what does it actually involve, is it just a general application etc etc. have looked through the sample test papers on the nats website but i am still unsure if this is what is included in the online stage.:ugh:

i am just about to do my online app and was hoping someone - anyone at all:) - may be able to give me some info about what to expect, how to prepare etc.

any help would be greatly appreciated. :ok:

Crazy Voyager 9th October 2010 18:03

My online test was only basic checking (you recive a sequence of letters or number and you are to match it to the identical one out of four options given). I have no idea how it went (I belive it went quite bad though) but so far I've not heard of anyone from PPRune failing the online test (pre stage1 test) so I'm not sure it's acctually a "real" test or if it's just for statistics (like comparison to see if the ones who do well on the online test usually go far in the selection process etc).

NDW 10th October 2010 08:59

JMSCOT,

The online test is as Crazy Voyager explained, Its basically a 6-7 letter or number code, which will be in the top centre of your screen.

4 options will appear and you have to select the correct one which matches the code above.

for example: RTYHUG:

1) RYTHUG
2) RTYHGU
3) HUGRTY
4) RTYHUG

Answer 4 is the correct option, it is basic, but in the near future the tests at a NATS centre will be horrendously hard!!.

This will have to be completed in 9 seconds, and If I remember there are about 5 questions in each section.

(TIP) Look at the end letters and the front letters of the Code, then scan down quickly at the options and find the matching one!!

In regards to the Online Application, fill it out as best you can and be honest, it states to put down all of your GCSE's or other quals. and it also states to put down the ones you failed on, so just be truthful, my GCSE's were terrible 7 A*-C grades and the rest were D's and E's.

In regards to what to expect, look at the NATS website and that will give you everything you need and search on this forum, their will be current and ex. ATC im sure who will guide you.

All the best with your Application

JMSCOT 10th October 2010 21:08

AT 25MPH, how far do you travel in 2 hours and 24 mins??

Urghhh im actually good at maths... I just cant find an easy way to do SDT in my head quickly.

Apparently If i know my 6 times table, then its easy in your head. Can someone give some examples... not with easy numbers, but with difficult ones that are not easily split...ie at What speed covers 23 miles in 2 hours 47 mins...

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks

BarryK 11th October 2010 14:44

AnnaColes - What time? I'm on my second go at things, booked in for Thursday at 1345, going to drive down and drive home again.

Seconds out, Round Two!

separation 11th October 2010 16:48

crash - this is how i do it. although there are different ways.

@ 25mph how far do you travel in 2hr 24 min.

2hrs is 50 miles

A 5th of an hour is 12mins so in 12 mins @ 25mph you go 5 miles as a 5th of 25 is 5.

So 12 mins x 2 is 24 mins making 10miles in 24 mins.

All added is 60 miles in 2hrs 24mins :ok:

sambatc 11th October 2010 20:31

@ Sammy H and Crazy Voyager

so, how did you stage 1s go guys???? :)

Crazy Voyager 11th October 2010 20:37

1 month to erly mate ;)
Even though I hadn't mind if it was today so I would know the result sooner :p

sambatc 11th October 2010 20:46

:) woops.....

i wish mine would come sooner too!!

AnnaColes 12th October 2010 09:47

BarryK - Mines at 10.45, so will all be over by the time you're in! I'm so nervous! Am I right in thinking that for the S/D/T questions you do get scrap paper?

Thank you x

Crazy Voyager 12th October 2010 10:35

Indeed, when I booked the time I thought it would be nice to have some time to prepare, but now I just want it over with!

Might feel diffrent when I'm on that train to Swanwick though, I'm already feeling a bit nervous :uhoh:

crash323 12th October 2010 11:00

Hey

For anyone who has completed stage 1 - are the SDT calcs pretty standard? ie - if you can to the ones on the RAF website, you can do the NATS ones?

Thanks

Chris

autumnleaves10 12th October 2010 11:01

I have the Stage 1 test on the 18th of this month at Fareham. Anyone else on that day? Any tips please? I was not aware there will be calculations involved though. The information I received did not mention this.

sambatc 12th October 2010 11:09

are you sure it wasn't mentioned in the emails NATS sent you inviting you to book the assessment, and then to confirm it? It was mentioned in mine....

autumnleaves10 12th October 2010 11:18

I received a link to the following:

The event will consist of selection tests & ATC paper.

The questions for the ATC paper are drawn from this link:
Test document material

Practice examples of the tests can be found at:-
NATS Practice Leaflet
Practice Tests on SHL Website

AnnaColes 12th October 2010 14:11

Could anyone give an example on the sort of 'compass direction' questions they are likely to ask? I thought it was mainly S/D/T caluclations!

Thanks

BarryK 12th October 2010 18:37

Anna,

So far as I remember you do. It's not overly hard, just there to sort the wheat from the chaff. If I'd known someone from here would be on an earlier one, I'd have booked it! Damn!

Sofia ATC 12th October 2010 19:52

Hi guys!!!
Best of luck for the ones are taking stage 1 soon. I have booked mine for December, I an pretty busy at work and i want to be prepared.
Any idea where could i find SDT exercices?
Thanks,

AnnaColes 13th October 2010 09:37

Barry,
Why don't you try and re-book it for the earlier one? Or have they all been taken? This wait is absolutely killing me, I just want it over with now!

So the standards pretty similar to those questions given on the RAF website?

Thanks

AnnaColes 13th October 2010 09:42

Sofia,

Speed Distance Time | OASC: RAF Officer and Aircrew Selection Centre

is good for practicing. Everytime you refresh the page there are new questions - so pretty good!

Good luck in your prep :)
