Hi,

Congrats for Fatty182 & Kieran17 for getting there!
And also congrats to all the others who at least tried
to make reality from a dream!
@Kieran17: thanks for the lumosity.com idea.
It seems really interesting and tempting, I've always
loved mind/logical games. :)

As for the actual tests from ASA I understand you guys
are not allowed to share the contents, but can you at least
give us a hint, like are they more oriented towards math,
memory, speed of reactions or multitasking?
Is there any other advice that comes to your mind
to help us prepare for the whole process (beside patience :) )?

Thank you and best of the luck in the Academy!

Fatty182 7th Feb 2011 10:58

Hey Simon, I might be interested in the room. Your email didn't come up in you rmessage, but I sent you a message through the forum which should go to your email I think.

How was your assessment day?

Hi all,

I’ve just been through the assessment centre earlier this week. It was an interesting day indeed, especially after almost a year and half wait.

Could those of you that have passed the assessment centre provide some feedback on how you think you went on the day? So that I can have a rough idea of how I went. I was told the result won’t be out for another month so this is the only way to help me to judge my chances.

Here is how I thought I went on the day; of course all post is high level as to not disclose details of the test to those who haven’t been through it yet.

Individual Simulation:
I did OK in the beginning; however towards the end when it got complicated I did went silent for a bit. At no point was I panicking but without realising the option that was available to me to solve the problem it took me a bit longer in the end. So I think I’ve pretty much failed this one.

Diagrammatic Reasoning:
Did anyone actually finished all the questions in this assessment within the given time frame and is confident with their answers? I was concentrating in getting the answers right and in the end only finished just over half of the questions. Whilst I think I got most of the answers right for the questions I did answer, I’m not sure I was fast enough… Another possible fail.

Interview:
I think I did OK with this one, the interviewer was having trouble keeping up with me trying to take notes.

Group Activity:
Nothing special here, did participate where I could, but I suppose only they knew what they were looking for.

Spatial Test:
Bit tricky, I know I've got few wrong answers or were too slow to answer.

Individual Briefing:
My presentation skill isn't very strong, infact it's piss weak, I was quite nervous so I doubt I did well with this one.

I’d really appreciate any feedback on how you think you went on the day and whether you’ve passed or not. Thanks for your input!

Cheers

ATC_applicant_2010 8th Feb 2011 22:25

hey mr. zoo
you're in same boat as me, in fact i thought u were trying to describe how MY day went

mr.zoo 8th Feb 2011 23:02

Hi ATC_Applicant_2010,

So did you pass the assessment or are you still waiting for your result?

ATC_applicant_2010 9th Feb 2011 01:53

:D
same situation as you, sat the assessment centre this week @ nth sydney

Kieran17 14th Feb 2011 07:10

I recieved my offical offer of employment today, to which I quickly read and promptly accepted:)
Did you get the same today fatty182 (possible FW pilot?)?
Enroute training group 50, beginning mid april. Training bond as previously stated, $70K reducing by 20% per year for five years.
April can't come fast enough now...

Stoked!

mr.zoo 14th Feb 2011 07:23

Kieran17,

How long from assessment day to job offer and how did you think you went in the assessment while you waited for the result?

Fatty182 14th Feb 2011 08:47

Hey Kieran,

Yeah, I got my letter of offer today too, and replied with an acceptance of course :) Same details, start 18th of April, course 50. Of note in my letter of offer, they have specified that I will end up in Brisbane. Which I notice means since they have notified me, they don't have to pay for me to move back to Melbourne at the end of the course :P Bit of a bugger there, but I guess I'd rather know I was definitely going home to Brissy than to have some mmoving costs paid.

And no, I'm not a pilot :) Gummark on here assumed the same thing based on the 182 in my name, just a coincidence :)

For me, it was a month and a half between my assessment day and getting a call saying I had been successful, but then another month and a half just about til I got my official offer and a place in a course. Just unlucky to be the last of the october testing days group to get a place, had to wait until they selected some people from the next batch of testing days. But super pumped to be on my way finally and looking forward to it. I'm wondering if there's a way we can find out who else is on the course, since they don't seem to be on this forum. Still trying to work out what my living arrangements are going to be :P

As for my day of testing, thought it was alright. Worst part was the presentation, I thought I had screwed that up royally, but obviously not bad enough to have me excluded :P Everything else I was happy with myself, I guess I was helped by a couple of people on my day being convinced they had failed and would be shown the door soon :P

As they tell you, don't panic if you think you haven't done well in a particular section, they are looking at a lot of different things. Just stay calm, take each step as it comes! And good luck!

Kieran17 14th Feb 2011 09:02

I'm gonna be situated in melbourne (touch wood) at the end of it all...
I'm looking at moving house now aswell, at the moment I'm the south east but I'm looking at finding a place somewhere between the city and the airport, I'm thinking around essondon somewhere at the moment. I think near a river, so I can take my kayak out, not too far to drive to the airport and near a train station so my girlfriend can catch the train to work... can't be too hard to find, surely:rolleyes:...
But at the end of all that I'll most likely be looking for house mates in a couple friendly, study friendly household...

yep, still stoked
Kieran

Andiator 14th Feb 2011 10:18

ATC

Hi,
Sorry to but in on your conversation. A buddy of mine who has nearly finished his year of training at the Learning Academy put me on to this so I thought I'd check it out. I see you'll be starting training? I've just accepted an offer that I recieved recently to start in April. May I ask when your course begins/what course you're doing?

Cheers

-Andrew

Fatty182 14th Feb 2011 10:30

Hey Andrew, Kieran and I are both on the Enroute course 50, starting on the 18th of April. Are you on this course too?

Kieran, ah ok, sounds promising. As I've said, I'm looking for somewhere to live, and I like to think I'm easy to live with :P I'm hoping to pay around 120 a week plus bills, other than that, I'm not fussed, as long as its not too far to the airport :) Only other thing is my wife will visit occasionally and as long as it's ok for her to stay :) More often than not tho, I woluld be heading home, rather than her come down :)

Kieran17 14th Feb 2011 10:56

Hello Andiator,
good to hear you got through and welcome to the site! when did you sit the testing day? I'm guessing that you're enroute aswell?
Fatty182, it's all still in the dreaming/hunting stage at the moment as to the housing situation, but we have a couple of months so we have time to hunt and hope for the right place at the right price...
Do you have any plans yet as to when you'll head down? I suppose it's all still pretty early days, don't wanna get too carried away...

Fatty182 14th Feb 2011 11:02

I'm not heading down until about the 7th of April. Have to work as long as I can to keep paying the mortgage up here :p yeah it's too early to look for a place yet, anything available now is almost certainly going to be gone by the time we need it. I had a quick look and there are a couple of places in essendon, 3 bedroom, under $350. Something like that would suit me :)

YAASB 15th Feb 2011 05:28

Assessment Days

Regarding the testing day, we were asked not to inform other candidates about the datails of the day in order to keep it even keel for all... however, there's nothing to stress about. All the assessors (spelling?) are very friendly and happy to have a chat... During the day at lunch and morning tea I had the opportunity to talk to the other candidates and the assessors, I recommend you do this if you get the chance you should, and more importantly, listen to what they say (lots of good advice)...
Hello All,

I am one of the ATC Assessors involved with the ATC Selection Programme.
What Kieran has posted above is very true, we do not want in depth details of the day revealed.

Two main reasons for this.

1. Spreading the information lessens the impact of the day, allowing people an opportunity to do better than you might have done. Remember that there is usually a few weeks between the assessment centres and the offers! Also, the scenarios do change slightly from centre to centre; deliberately, to mitigate the chatting between candidates. If we feel that there is a candidate with prior knowledge then things will be quite different for them!

2. Your interpretation of the day may actually be quite different to the way we, the assessors, saw it. There has been several people who walked out at the end of the day thinking they had excelled, but won't be getting a place on a course. The reality is, you don't actually know what it is we are looking for. And I am not about to tell you....;)

What I will say is that the people that conduct the Assessment Centres are all wonderful people and are spending a lot of time (usually away from home) trying to find the right people for the job. Take the time to chat with them during the breaks and lunch, we are more than happy to have a chat and provide an insight.

Here are some tips for those soon to be assessed.

*Try and visit a Centre or Tower, if you haven't already. It is good to be able to relate to the job you have applied for.

*On the day, be yourself. Its that simple. Don't pretend to be someone you think we want to see.

*Keep going. It is a deliberately long day. If a session didn't go too well, don't drop your bundle. Move on and do your best in the next exercise.

*Be proud that you have got this far, it is an achievement in itself.

The next assessment centre is in Melbourne in March, maybe I will meet some of you there.

In the mean time if you have any questions, feel free to post, email or PM me.

Cheers,

Boonie.

Enroute Course 50

Hi Keiran and Fatty,
yep I'm starting Enroute Course 50 on 18th of April. I had my interview early last month followed by the Assessment centre day a week later on Wednesday the 12th of Jan, 3 weeks later I had the phone call and offer for the course. I too was pretty stoked (and still am). I'm really looking forward to getting stuck in to the training.

max1 15th Feb 2011 10:03

Boonie has outed himself. Who wudda thunk it?

Kieran17 15th Feb 2011 10:25

I say it's a big thumbs up to Boonie, good to see some advice come from the top:ok:

YAASB 15th Feb 2011 11:12

Max1 , care to join me on the "outside"?;)

Kieran17 15th Feb 2011 22:03

Andiator, sounds like you were on a pretty similar time line to me, I went through assessment on the 9th. I agree, April can't come quick enough now!
It'd be good if we could find a few of us who got through a meet at at some time...

Kieran

LeviTate 17th Feb 2011 10:20

I've accepted a place on Course 50 - April 18th as well. I first applied in 2007, go knocked back almost a year later after the interview stage as it was then. Reapplied again April 2010 and managed to get all the way through.

Real stuff happens now - well in 2 months time anyway. Looking forward to it.

I've lived in Melbourne my whole life and have been offered a place in Melbourne Enroute at the end of it. Good luck to those relocating from the training.

Fatty182 17th Feb 2011 11:17

Congratulations mate :) I'll see you down there in a few weeks :) They have specified that I'll be returning to Brisbane to work, which I am very happy with :)

Niblib 17th Feb 2011 11:45

Hey all, I found this site using google and it's been incredibly informative. So, firstly, thank you everyone!

I still, however, have a few questions.

How long before the psychometric testing do you receive an email inviting you? I did the online testing in October and passed. My most recent email was early January which basically said "thanks for being patient, not long now.". If the next center is in March, I should be getting an email soon?

Also, when do I start looking for a trip to a tower. Before the psych test or between it and the interview? Or do they hold them on the same day these days? (I think I read that somewhere.) How receptive are they to letting prospective employees have a look around? How much time would they give me? And what sort of things should I be looking at/Questions to ask while I'm there?

Sorry, that's heaps of questions. Any info would be awesome. Thanks heaps.
-Niblib.

Kieran17 17th Feb 2011 11:52

Congrats LeviTate:ok:it can be a long wait at times but it's finally paid off...
Good to see another one of us here... I'm in the process of house hunting now for some where closer to the airport. In the south east currently and I don't really want to have to drive an hour and a half each way:rolleyes:...

We'll all have to catch up at some point soon, hopefully we'll be able to get in contact with all the others in our course before it starts.

All the best
Kieran

Andiator 18th Feb 2011 06:02

Hey LeviTate,
Kudos to you for persistance! Looking forward to meeting you and everyone in April! Congratulations!

-Andiator

Andiator 18th Feb 2011 06:10

Hi Niblib,
I had my online testing in September. I then didn't hear anything till January. I got a phone call, had an interview on the spot and was invited to an Assessment centre a week later so I was given one weeks notice. I've heard of vastly differring timeline scenarios for diferent people. It seems hard to gauge when you might be contacted based on other people's situations. My advice, just hope and pray and then forget about it.:)

-Andiator

Niblib 18th Feb 2011 09:39

Thanks Andiator. So still a bit of a wait till the next stage :)
I did my testing in september too. Guess you scored higher than me :) unless it's alphabetized. For the sake of the Z's I'd hope not since I'm B.
Anyway, thanks again. Look forward to working with you one day. (that's a bit hopeful considering how early on in the application I am. Still, fingers crossed)

tobzalp 18th Feb 2011 12:10

I am greatly concerned that Boonie is involved with selections. Normally with anything Airservices you have to think of whatever the right thing to do is and expect them to do the opposite. It seems that this time they forgot. Good to see. The place might actually have half a chance at being 'a great place to work' if this keeps up........

Hmmmm, will wait and see on that one

Fatty182 18th Feb 2011 12:27

My timeline has been very long too, applied in November 2009, and finally offered a place in a course in January 2011. Just glad to be finally on my way!

act2atc 19th Feb 2011 03:23

Hi,

Does anyone know how can one get to visit a Centre or Tower, as YAASB suggested? So far I assumed they aren't open to the general public. So can you please share what's the procedure or who should I contact for a visit
(Canberra / Sydney / Melbourne area)?
Thanks in advance.

TroyMcClure 19th Feb 2011 13:06

Hi guys, I applied in 1957 and i'm still waiting for phone interview. Even though i'm now 87 years old i feel as fit as........oh oh oh fuuuuccccccccckkkkkkkkkkkkk

Niblib 20th Feb 2011 02:15

Haha. It's a bit that way isn't it? :)

YAASB 20th Feb 2011 03:02

Also, when do I start looking for a trip to a tower. Before the psych test or between it and the interview? Or do they hold them on the same day these days? (I think I read that somewhere.)
The Assessment covers interviews and associated testing all on one day.

How receptive are they to letting prospective employees have a look around? How much time would they give me? And what sort of things should I be looking at/Questions to ask while I'm there?
If you are interested in becoming a controller, then a visit to a Centre or Tower is pretty important. Actually seeing what goes on, and taking in the surroundings may give you a better understanding of the job.
We are always happy to show prospective controllers around, and give them the grand tour.

I will get the correct contact details for you and post them here. In the mean time you can call the main switchboard in Canberra,1300 301 120, and they will be able to direct you, or you can email me, and I will organise.

Timing is up to you, but I would allow a couple hours if you want to see the both the centre and tower.

While I am on the subject of Centre and Tower, remember that 80+% of controllers work in Centres, and that the chances of landing a plum job in Gold Coast Tower are extremely remote!

Make sure you look at the enroute sectors, and try to talk to a a couple of controllers to see how they enjoy the job, Also newly rated controllers are good to talk to, as they can give you some insight into the Learning Academy.

With regard to the timeline of application process, it does take some time. Please be patient, there are a lot of applications at the moment and the Recruitment Team is working through them as fast as they can.

Topzalp, Thanks for the compliment, I think........:ok:

Rolloffthetop 21st Feb 2011 03:11

Are tower places on offer for these courses or any future ones?

Kieran17 22nd Feb 2011 07:18

Share House

It looks like I'll be getting the lease at a place at Taylors Hill, which is about 20Kms from the airport, relatively new place, 2 story, 3 bedrooms. We are signing the lease on friday if anyone is interested in sharing. Rent will be around $120 plus bills each. If anyones interested let me know...

Kieran

Fatty182 22nd Feb 2011 10:55

I'm interested :P But you already knew that :)

Niblib 22nd Feb 2011 11:44

Thanks Yaasb. I'll give them a soon and see if they can't organize a tour of Tullermarine for me. Thanks heaps.
