Hello,
I've just a couple of questions about ATCO selection and training with ASA.

- What's the age limit to be able to apply as an ATCO and does it differ between ATC positions?

- Candidates average fail rate during the selection process? How many candidates are screened yearly?

- ATCO students fail rate during training?

Thanks
1. There is no age limit, however from experience people over the age of about 30 have a higher failure rate.

That being said older people can and do get through the training it just depends on the amount of effort the individual is prepared to put in.

2. Well I'm not sure about the averages on this one however I was able to find out for my course they had just over 1200 applications, about 400 were invited to the testing day's, about 120 were interviewed and 12 of us were offered training slots.

3. It really does vary from course to course i.e one course recently had all rate and another recently had all but one fail.

The average seems to be around the 50% mark give or take.

Dont let those numbers put you off, this really is the type of job you don't want to be doing if you are not suited to it and it's better to find out before you have thousands of lives in your hands.

However if you do make it through you will find it is a fantastic job if you can handle the shift work.

Thanks MelbATC for the info, don't have questions yet but I'll come back to the thread if something pops op... :)

I've heard a rumour there's a class starting in Brisbane next year instead of Melbourne. Anyone know anything about this, or received any offers for this course?

Hey guys, recieved my offer via phonecall today. Its for the new Brisbane course starting 28th February. I agree, it was a bit of an anti-climax as I was kind ok looking forward to moving to melbourne but also glad that I've finally got a start date and can start planning my next 18 months.

ATC_actual 14th Dec 2010 11:45

Howdy,

I got the call today for the Brisbane course.
Croupsurf and television, we should catch up sone time before the course. Would be great to meet anyone else on the Bris course too. And naturally all the trainees heading south are more than welcome.

Guessing post Xmas will be easier for everyone.

Heh, if you're that disappointed about not going to Melbourne, I'll swap with you :P Apparently the people for the Brisbane course were selected at random....

Johnny_Chase 15th Dec 2010 04:12

Another one for the Brisbane course here! I was quite surprised and a little disappointed to not be moving down. I suppose there will be fewer delays in the sim this way! I call for a catch up as well. Hamo Hotel again?

Anburoozu Kun 15th Dec 2010 08:02

ATC_intrain,

May I ask how long did you have to wait after your phone interview before receiving an email invitation to book your assessment day?

Thx

ATC_intrain 15th Dec 2010 12:51

I dont expect the cource to start untill april or may:zzz:, coz the feb and late jan people are alreading being selected... if you know what I mean..:hmm:

ATC_intrain 16th Dec 2010 07:52

Hi all,

Just got a email sayng........

Thank you for booking into our assessment centre in Melbourne.

Please note that all days are now fully booked for our Assessment Centre and you are not able to amend your date of participation through our online system. Please contact us if you are no longer able to attend on 02 6268 4868.

The Assessment Centre starts at 9.00am. Please arrive by 8:30am to ensure a prompt start to the day. The Assessment Centre venue address is:

Airservices Australia Security TAAATS Building
212 Tower Rd, Melbourne Airport
Tullamarine, 3043

Six candidates are invited each day:ok:. We have a number of Assessors made up of Operational Air Traffic Controllers, Managers and our Human Resources team. These people are trained in the assessment and selection process. We try to keep the process as relaxed as possible, as this is the best way to get to know you and determine if there is a real fit between you, the requirements of the job and our organisation. On some days observers and/or trainee Assessors will be present.

You will be advised in as soon as possible after the assessment centre if you have been successful in being offered a place on a training course.

The assessment day is staggered for each candidate. You will take part in:

- A group problem solving activity
- An individual simulation exercise
- A behavioural based interview
- An individual briefing exercise
- Spatial & diagrammatic reasoning as well as verification of your original online test results.

So the questions are:-
a. What to expect in the group solving activity and what to expect.
b. What is the individual simulation exercise.
c. What to expect in individual briefing exercise.
d. What are Spatial & diagrammatic reasoning??

Any help would be appreciated.....

As discussed at the Assessment Centres, it would be appreciated if actvities and assessments were not discussed to ensure a fair recruitment process for all.
Many thanks,

Might get some answers about the proposed (?) Brisbane course now ....

or not.

Plazbot 21st Dec 2010 09:55

Haha, If anyone doubted my advice that Airsevices was indeed watching them on Ppprune, I would think that doubt would now be removed. Employer of choice?

I agree, Hmmmmmm.

Baileys 21st Dec 2010 12:42

That is hilarious - we always thought it and now we have the proof.

The funniest thing is that you can guarantee that it would have taken several meetings and approval of numerous managers for someone to make that post.

At least we can rest assured that 'they' know what a 'great' job they are doing running the place from reading the pprune boards.

What a load of sh!t.

I Have been in the job now for 2 decades with 4 ISPS in 3 countries and that is just bollocks.

Thank christ when I returned to Australia I bypassed the college and recruitment team.

C-change 24th Dec 2010 03:56

Isn't it interesting that the Airservices Australia Recruitment Team have staff available and the time to read Pprune !
Must be bored after filling all those vacancies. ;)

trueline 25th Dec 2010 08:56

Many thanks,
Airservices Australia Recruitment Team.

I hope they told you the pass rate is currently below 50%. You could pass the college after 1 year, do 6 months field training and still miss out.

Think about what you're giving up before you roll the dice.

Has anyone starting the courses in teh new year recieved any pre course material yet?

TranceX2 29th Dec 2010 10:04

Just curious as to who's still waiting on the assessment day or maybe the phone interview?

ATC_intrain 30th Dec 2010 09:09

hey trance x,

TranceX2 30th Dec 2010 10:44

Waiting on the phone interview. Last email I received said it will be in Dec or Jan.

Undercover Brother 31st Dec 2010 02:55

As it is January this Saturday, curious if anyone doing the course in Brisbane has been given a start date and course joining instructions as yet?
People from Brisbane don't even know what's happening with the Brisbane course, let alone the Canberra crew, who will be fresh from there Xmas break. :oh:

Johnny_Chase 31st Dec 2010 08:27

Brisbane start date: 28th February.

Jimh91 1st Jan 2011 03:20

Hey Mac

I start 21st Feb on the tower course and received my pre-course material a few weeks before Christmas. Lots to study, but am enjoying it all. Anyone else getting through the study?

Johnny_Chase 1st Jan 2011 07:56

What do you mean?

Kieran17 1st Jan 2011 09:46

Hi all,
just wondering what info people may have on the service contracts? as in service time, bond repayments etc...
Congrats to all that are in so far and good luck to the rest of us...

cheers
Kieran

rr007 4th Jan 2011 03:07

There is a few posts early on this thread about the training bond, but from the top of my head it's a 5 year bond if you actually pass the course and get rated. The number $70,000 comes to mind but don't quote me. Rumors are airservices only makes you pay if you leave for another ATC gig, not if you give-up ATC all together. There is no repayments, just have to do the 5 years.

Undercover Brother 4th Jan 2011 19:04

$70,000 is correct, from the day you rate, which could be up to 2 years after you start your training. 7 years is a long time.....

Also ASA recently told a near-rated field trainee, that the bond would be payable even if they didn't use their license elsewhere. Trainee resigned.:hmm:

str8shooter 4th Jan 2011 21:17

Hi Trance

"Just curious as to who's still waiting on the assessment day or maybe the phone interview?"

Sorry for the late reply, just got back into things after the silly season. I'm in the same boat as you. Was told to expect an email Dec / Jan to book a phone interview, but no word as yet. We still have another 3 wks of Jan left, so I'm being patient.

If you, or anyone else in this situation, hears anything, please let us know.......

maton325 5th Jan 2011 06:27

str8shooter, I got a phone call yesterday asking if I was available for a phone interview today (and of course I was)

Thought it didn't go too well, but got an email quite quickly asking me to book my assessment centre day. Apparantly theres one next week but it's booked out, and another one in the 2nd week of March which is when I'm booked in.

This is my second go at it, last attempt over 2 years ago I got through the assessment centre and had a panel interview but got rejected. Hopefully things go better this time..

From the correspondance I've had, it seems as though the assessment centre is the last stage before referee/medical checks.. there's no mention of another panel interview?

str8shooter 5th Jan 2011 20:30

Good luck with it Maton, hopefully being your 2nd time round with the assessment day will give you a bit of a "heads-up". Hang in there...., and, well done for persisting........ :ok:

Me...., well, I just wait. It's been almost 12 mths since first registering my expression of interest, so I've learnt to be patient. As an old African saying goes: "Slowly, slowly, catch the monkey!" :)
