Im sure there are text they give you there or something like that. But is there anything you wish you had have memorized (ie a list of acronyms) that would have made that first week a little easier.
You will receive a pre-course training package approx 1 month before the course start date, this package is in the process of being changed so I cant tell you what is included.

I would suggest that you actually read the pre-course material when you receive it unlike some trainees and you should be fine. There is nothing too complex in the first week or so.:}

The only other thing I would suggest is if you are not proficient with the phonetic alphabet you learn practice that.

tobzalp 25th Sep 2009 08:53

Fivel

Learn the Phonetic Alphabet

Alpha, Bravo, Charlie etc

A bit of study into how temp, altitude and pressure change with relation to eachother will be useful.

Some work on converting Knots to 'miles per minute' again is going to assist. Eg, 420 Knots os 7 miles per minute, if there is closing between 2 aircraft of 60 knots, that is one mile every minute and so on. Do some work on the halves and thirds etc as well.

Have a gooogle for True Airspeed (TAS), Ground Speed (GS) and Indiicated Airspeed (IAS) and how they relate to what an aircraft does speeds wise at altitudes and in winds.

This should get you started and probably see you through the first 6 weeks with a little leg up.

fivel 25th Sep 2009 12:14

Thanks heaps guys.
I just can't sit around doing nothing and waiting anymore. I may as well get a bit of an idea.

Toboto 29th Sep 2009 05:17

To anyone who knows

What email addres(s) are you using to contact ASA for information and updates because i emailed them 7 weeks ago and then 2 weeks ago and i still got nothing. Cheers

Rolloffthetop 29th Sep 2009 08:24

Toboto,

The best way to get an answer is to call the HR person. After emailing once quite some time ago and never getting a response, I decided on calling to get answers I required. The woman was helpful and answered everything I needed. She also said she was very "under-resourced" so I suspect she has lots of unread emails in her inbox...

And if you are checking on the recruitment process, please give us all a heads up too! ;)

The human resources human dealing with recruiting more human resources is under resourced with humans. That tells you everything you need to know about A$A.

SEEK jobs database and employment advice

mikethepomme 5th Oct 2009 03:13

Only just found this post from whirlpool, it nice to find people who have gone through the same thing as I have... I applied back in September 2008, and (3-4 weeks ago) was offered a melbourne based position which started a few days ago, or brisbane based one next march which I accepted, assuming the course will be run (someone posted something similar to this before, i hope this isn't a bad omen)

Good luck to all, it has been a very long process and although I have another 5 months to wait before I start, at least at this point I have a verbal offer... waiting on the merit list was irritating as I really had no idea if I was going to be offered a job at the end.

146 days to go...

If anyone else has been accepted to the march 1st 2010 intake, (i'd assume it’s the same one as I'm in) please send me a PM. It would be nice to get to know a couple of you before hand, go out for a drink if you’re in brisbane etc.

Laino 7th Oct 2009 08:18

Hi All,

I was after some guidance. I have completed the testing so far, up to the phone interview. After that there is face to face interview and psychically test is that all?
If I get to face to face interview, is there anything I can do to prepare for the interview?

I has seen the book below is it worth while reading?
Air Traffic Control Career Prep

gemmy 7th Oct 2009 22:33

Laino,

Just read back over this Thread & there will be plenty of advice for your Behavioural Panel Interview. 3 people will be on the panel.

It will run for approx 45mins. It is based on the STAR technique. Suggest you google STAR Interviews. It was the best advice I was given on this thread.

I suggest you also arrange a visit to an Air Traffic Tower/Enroute facility. This is good prep for the Interveiw, as they tend to ask if you have down this.

The only advice I could give is learn to be VERY VERY Patient.. :-). A lot of us applied back in Aug/Sept last year & our referees are only just being contacted now !

Good Luck !

brissyboy 12th Oct 2009 05:03

Hey EnemyMIG

From your suburbs I'm assuming the classes are at Essendon airport or nearby?

Cheers

The classes are conducted in the air services complex a Melbourne Airport

I'd suggest you make such a visit, regardless of whether or not you think it will assist your application.

Seriously, if you're applying for an ATC position, knowing what is actually involved in the job should be a prerequisite for your own preparation, & self-determination of your suitability.

gemmy 13th Oct 2009 00:56

5Miles..

Very True. However Melbourne Facilities (or at least the Liaison Officer) will only allow you to visit once you have been given a Panel Interview Date. (This could've changed over the past 9mths though)

Brisbane however didn't stipulate the same rules. It may also be different now though?

I was lucky enough to have a lot of exposure to ATC whilst in the RAAF.

But yes, I agree with you.. one should get insight to the job even prior to applying.

enemyMiG 13th Oct 2009 01:41

Hi brissyboy

Suburbs to the south of Melb Airport give much easier access to the ASA complex, which is on the western side of the airport

mont 24th Oct 2009 10:27

Has anyone heard from ASA since referees were checked 5-6 weeks ago?

gemmy 24th Oct 2009 10:54

I have been advised that I will most likely be on the March course due to my spot on the Order of Merit list... but they may also be running a Tower course next year now.. so they (AsA) are going to ask those on the order of merit list if & who would be interested etc...

If anyone is on the March course, I'll be looking for room mates as I am moving from interstate & will get all my furniture moved down... :-).

enemyMiG 24th Oct 2009 22:23

Great news gemmy!

Did they contact you via phone or email?
Tower hey? Interesting!

gemmy 24th Oct 2009 23:41

It was via email..... as I emailed them first to advise I will be overseas as of next week for a few weeks.

Yes Tower was always my preference as I spent a bit of time visiting the Tower when I was in the RAAF... just the posting opportunities after successfully completing training could be any one of the 26 locations.

fivel 25th Oct 2009 05:57

Good news hey gemmy. Actually any news is good news.
I just wish they would send around a group email to anyone still on the merit list.
Just to say " You are still being processed we haven't forgotten about you."
That can't be so hard to do can it?

If they were feeling really nice they could even give an approximate month, even if it isn't definite.

Did you email Casey Fulton gemmy? or was it someone else?

mikethepomme 25th Oct 2009 09:08

Well like I said before, I did get verbal confirmation I’d be on the march course... but haven't heard anything concrete since. I'd hope I hear something soon, but I really wouldn't be surprised if I didn't hear anything until early next year.

If reference checks have been done on you, I’d be pretty confident of getting offered a position, but it’s probably going to be a lot more waiting.

I understand the slight possibility of courses getting cancelled, resources etc, so i think they wouldn't want anything in writing until much closer to the date. While it would make it easier for us if we all got a confirmation now, it would make things a lot harder for AsA if it all goes pear shaped.

Rolloffthetop 25th Oct 2009 12:32

From what I was emailed/told, positions will only be offered 3 to 4 months before the course start.

Therefore, for a March start one would assume an offer would take place somewhere around Dec.

Who knows though.... You probably wouldn't believe you have a course until you start day one of it!

nick83 28th Oct 2009 05:38

For people currently in the phone interview stage, check your e-mail!

Now time to prepare for the interview

fivel 29th Oct 2009 09:16

Well, i don't know how any of you get any information. I'm hitting dead ends and getting no correspondence at all with emails or phones.
I do think after 6 months of waiting, it's not to much to ask for a little whisper.
Ahh well

talentedparsley 29th Oct 2009 09:43

yes I just received an email today stating that my telephone interview was successful! now to re-read all the lovely helpful information regarding panel interviews...I honestly never thought I'd get this far, I've even started a new job recently because I couldn't be sure how far, or even how long it would take to go through this process! (if I get through) I could be a senior staff member in this job before I even get an offer! :p

mikethepomme 29th Oct 2009 14:27

I went for my panel interview 11th March, nothing concrete yet, so I think you will be a senior staff member before you hear!

talentedparsley 30th Oct 2009 08:52

oh I know that I could call any amount of phone numbers before I find a real person; so where is the Liason Officer for the Melbourne Facilities or their phone number located?? :D If no one knows I will play hunt for the phone number ...

gemmy 30th Oct 2009 21:20

Phone:+61 2 6268 4040Phone:+61 2 6268 4040Phone: +61 2 6268 4040

This number should get you to the right person. It's the media number for visits etc. I used this initially for Melbs, But I ended up visiting the Brissy facilities !

Good Luck !

talentedparsley 31st Oct 2009 08:24

...gemmy you are... A GEM! :D

gemmy 4th Nov 2009 06:59

If you are still looking for a room come mid Feb (somehow I don't like my chances that the room will still be available!), Shoot me a PM.

cattledog 4th Nov 2009 22:50

Parsley,

:oh:

enemyMiG 5th Nov 2009 04:05

Finally!

Received a verbal offer, today, for a Tower course starting Jan 11!

Obviously said 'Yes'.........

Toboto 5th Nov 2009 10:29

Why the #@%$ is everyone getting referee checks and verbal offers after 4 emails to ASA i aint got nothing :{

mont 5th Nov 2009 11:12

Congratulations and well done EnemyMig.

fivel 5th Nov 2009 11:33

Dont worry Toboto, we'll all get there soon.

Congrats MiG glad to hear you've heard something.

Although with post like cattledog im starting to wonder why im still excited about getting this job.
But friday night beers and poker does sound good

1208PUNK 5th Nov 2009 13:00

tick tock tick tock.......

TOBOTO understand your situation.i gave up along time ago emailing because i waited so bloody long on replies.....ive had my references checked but nothing else has come of it.everyone keeps saying be patient but to be honest this whole process is a total piss take! im forever getting people asking me did i make the whole thing up about possibly becoming a trainee for ATC and i just shrugg my shoulders and laugh!! in the UK it takes 3 months from your 1st test online to starting college, unfortunately i failed the last stage :*.i would say i started this whole process nearly 16-18 months ago.....hilarious isnt it?? emailing aldonna or casey is your best bet though so all i can say is hang in there.i wanted this so badly but the lack of progression is slowly beginning to irritate me and make me hope that this has all not been a waste of my time!! jon

enemyMiG 6th Nov 2009 22:33

Thanks mont and fivel

9 weeks notice isn't much, maybe someone dropped out and ASA needed a position filled quickly by a local who doesn't have to move etc?
Either way I'm stoked
Have to organise my medical now

Hang in there all :)

talentedparsley 10th Nov 2009 04:05

i've got to admit cattledog, I do have a job with all those things...

I just feel like since I've got so far I have to keep pushing on...its terrible but when I started this process I wasn't incredibly fussed how far I got through and I feel like i've just tap danced my way so far, each time I got the ok for the next round I was completely surprised more and more the further I got...

Plus at this rate even if I do get through i won't be far enough on the merit list to start until my daughter is in high school (she's currently 10 months old)...:p

Dizzy Llama 10th Nov 2009 06:59

(she's currently 10 months old)...http://images.ibsrv.net/ibsrv/res/sr...ies/tongue.gif
the timing should be great - just ready to start Primary School in Dubai/Ireland/Germany (select appropriate) !! :ok:
