Good luck to all going through the interrupt testing! I've completed my video interview, and I'm through to the Assessment Centre.
Some tips for those doing the interrupt test: Get a good nights sleep, have coffee for concentration if you'd like, manage your time well during the test ;). If anyone has done the assessment centre recently, would you be able to say if its virtual or in person? The email I got told me to stand by for an invite to it, but was otherwise pretty vague. Pretty pumped to get through to hopefully the last stage of selection, however I shouldn't get my hopes up. |

Interrupt test
Well for those following, I did the online interrupt test today and actually thoroughly enjoyed it.
You are required to complete a task following commands from planes but ensuring you comply with 'rules' set out also. Meanwhile you also need to answer questions and follow instructions on a completely different subject. It requires concentration, accuracy and the ability to prioritise and forward plan. There's really no way to prepare for this beforehand. We were told we'd receive results within 24hrs however I received an email within 10 minutes saying I'd passed and am now onto the video interview. There's a deadline of one week to complete this. The facilitator also told us what to expect moving forward and that they're hoping to hold the online assessment centre before Christmas. So still lots of time to go. I hope everyone else did well with the test and have progessed to the next stage. |
Thanks for letting me know, and best of luck to both of you! Hopefully it's not too far in the future for me.

Hi I am doing the interrrupt test in a few weeks, pretty nervous about it.

Assessment centre
Is anyone else booked in to do the assessment centre next week? I'm Thursday 3rd Nov at midday.
Good luck if you are |
Assessment Centre
Hey Haylsa!
I’m booked in for the same time slot (1pm if you’re in Sydney or Melbourne). Congrats on making it this far and best of luck for the day! |
Haylsa and Sketchy06, now that you guys would have finished, how did you guys go? I felt like I did well on the 1st exercise of the day, and the 1st part of the interview, but my behavioural interview was not so great. But hey, I made it through this far, so that's nothing to be ashamed of. If you guys let me know when you get something back, I'll do the same. In my session they said a few business days, so I'm thinking ~ Monday/Tuesday. My fingers are crossed for both of you!
|
Hey Exiflame!
I think I did pretty well. I mean, I think I did my best on both sections but whether that’s enough to make it through… I’m not sure. The biggest thing that hit me straight away in the group task was that everyone there was exceptional, and I’d be really happy for anyone in my group that made it through. In the interview, the people that took me through it were really cool so it felt far more like a conversation than an interrogation which was nice. And don’t stress, I’m sure you did better than you initially thought. What’s done is done - don’t overthink it! There’s no prize for second place, and I’ve never been one to take much solace from just getting close to something I’m striving for, but after meeting the group of people I was in with today, it really is an achievement to make it to that stage. I was told a maximum of 2 weeks to hear back but obviously if it is a few business days, that would be ideal. Let me know how you go! I’m pulling for ya! |
Assessment centre
Hi Exiflame,
I was the opposite. Not a fan of the group exercise but was really able to show myself during the individual session. They also advised it'd be a week before hearing anything. I'm trying to stay positive 🙂 They said that the March 2023 training school is full so it will be after that if we make it. Hopefully there's one shortly after that 🤞 I'm so ready to get started! Good luck!! |
Yeah I heard the same Haylsa, and that no Tower courses are planned for a while. Looking back on it, I'd be pretty surprised if I made it through to references. My behavioural situations weren't bad, it was just my delivery that was all over the shop. Completely different to my prerecorded interview, I think it was just nerves on the day. Oh well, no matter what happens it was a fun day and I've really enjoyed going through the process! From what I gathered there's 12 slots open in the course, and around 24 people were put through the assessment centre all up for this round, although I can't speak to their selection process / chances of making it through.

For those following, I just got an email requesting I submit referees. Fingers crossed you guys get the same news shortly!!

I'm so excited 😊 (BTW which one were you in the assessment? It's obvious who I am 👗 🤣) |
Good news here as well, congrats to both of you!

G'day all,
I've been going through the application process since about April this year. Got through all the testing up to and including the group day on the 14th Sep. Reference checks have been done and met the requirements to date, and as of 04th October I've been told Airservices are now finalising the dates for training next year and my application is pending that! Anyone have any insight if there are any further steps or am I now awaiting an invite to commence the role subject to medical and security checks? Good luck to all who have just submitted their referee's recently as per the thread! |

Offer
Did anyone else get a phone call today with a verbal offer??
I've been given a date in March for Tower stream! So excited now, really looking forward to starting. She said all the details will be sent this week via letter :) Hope everyone else hears soon |
Yep, except it was a verbal offer to be on reserve for the March enroute course, otherwise likely July for the next course when they actually schedule it. Exciting times!

Hi all, I can see that trainee ATC recruitment is open again and wonder if anyone applied?
Not sure how many trainees they are recruiting this round. Does anyone remember if they send out the online assessment a few days after you've applied or after the application closes. Do you know anyone that is successful in the recruitment being a permanent residence only? As far as I know Darwin Airport is shared with RAAF so I'd imagine you'd need to be an Australian citizen to work at that tower. In the recruitment ad they mentioned PR is eligible but I'd imagine there aren't many that make it am I right? Fingers cross hopefully I make it! |

Hi everyone,
That's incredible that you only got maybe one of those maths questions wrong, I just did that test and I must say I found the radar simulation test difficult especially at the end. I did really well in the practice part though, but I guess in the real exam you kind of get worried and have hardly any time. I guess the best method is to just pick the first thing that comes to your mind without thinking further. Also maybe I shouldn't have done it sitting in the dark at 3 am in the morning either lol Anyways I still have to do a cognitive ability test, but I felt other parts were pretty easy. Has anyone here actually proceeded to the next round or been offered a role after not acing the radar sim test? |

I finished the 2nd round of testing yesterday and got an email today saying I passed and the next round is the interrupt test on an MS Teams call with one of the recruiters. I'm a bit surprised I made it this far but I feel I did better on the 2nd round of testing than the first.

Hey dude congratulations!!! I was wondering did you study in anyway or did the spatial reasoning and radar collisions just come naturally to you?

Also, because I'm such a nerd I play a couple different ATC simulator games. Mainly Tower 3D Pro which is tower and ground and another called Endless ATC which is an Approach radar Sim. In general I play a lot of video games so staring at a screen having to react quickly to something is not new to me 😂 |

Congratulations for all those who have made it so far. I was wondering if anyone could shed some more light on the interrupt test. When you refer to comply with 'rules', is this like the coded reasoning test we did in part 2? And with the answering of questions and following instructions on a different subject, could you give an example of one?
|
I completed the interrupt test today and about an hour after got an email saying I passed, onto the recorded video interview! The exam was pretty interesting, I don't think I messed up on any of the planes but got a couple of the shape/math questions wrong which is to be expected. If I had to guess I would say I got like a 90% pass on it. The recruiter said they expect a high level of accuracy on the exam so I wonder what the cutoff is.
|
I was so confident when I did the practice test that they sent earlier. But I think I got hammered in the actual test. It is not quite same as the practice ones LOL
|
Good luck ImGonnaMakeIt! I did the online tests today. Some of the tests felt easier than the practice tests but they were definitely different. I felt I did well on Numerical Calc, Inductive Reasoning, and Checking. Verbal Reasoning is my weak spot, in the practice I always struggled even though English is my first (only) language. Hopefully I did well enough. The Spacial Ability test was by far the hardest. Turns out I'm not great at folding and unfolding cubes in my head. The OPQ was just interesting, who knows what they're looking for there...
|
I thought I was confident in numerical and checking, but the way they time it is different, and with a crappy mouse + crappy computer, you kinda lost like 1~2 secs every question, about 30% of alloweable time so there's that. Otherwise I find Spatial and Inductive Reasoning to be very fun! Verbal Reasoning is also definitely my weakest spot :)

I felt reasonably confident after the practise questions for numerical, and I'm reasonably good with numbers. I unfortunately had a few questions in round 4/5 where I took too long to get an answer, and at least 1 where I rushed to get an answer in at the last second and mistyped it. I also had one question with the verbal reasoning where I didn't realise the text had changed, and answered based off of the previous text... I'm hoping that this won't cause me to fail, as I feel pretty good about it otherwise. I struggled a little bit with the spacial reasoning and I felt like I was a little bit slow, finishing with about 12 seconds to spare. I did enjoy the inductive reasoning, and felt that most of the patterns were very easy to see. |
Hi All,
Someone care to explain the pros/cons of Tower v Enroute stream if one was lucky enough to pass the selection process? cheers |
Of course as I'm not an ATC this is what I've seen online.
Tower: Much harder to get into + You work with a view + Shorter training course length + If regional, you're most likely going to have an easier schedule (no overnights) - Likely to be working in the middle of no where at start - Harder to go from tower -> approach (maybe?) Enroute: + Based in major population centre - Almost certainly will have rotating 24/7 roster - Longer course / more stressful? |
I'm gonna say with tower most of the time you'll have less time to make a decision as well and deal with a lot of immediate or sudden changes?
with enroute you'll have some time to plan ahead probably. BTW just got an email for round 2 of assessment, sent from a New Zealand email address! All the tests this time seem more complicated! |
For anybody waiting on a response... I got an email today telling me I was successful and have been invited to do another 3 online tests. Good luck to anyone waiting!
|
Very true, but I'm sure the additional traffic in enroute sectors makes up for it.
Jzt, I think I'm in the same cohort as you. The last you heard from AsA was your app being placed on hold late November following the Assessment Centre right? |
As some others have mentioned I have also passed the video interview and been invited for three more tests. Find it interesting that during the interrupt test the assessor said it would be the last of the testing we would have to do. I'm curious to see what these ones involve.
