Egyptian ATCs and Pilots

Hi

Been thinking of posting this topic long time but wanted to know what our PPrune Controllers and Pilots think of Egyptian ATCs and Pilots

I have recently made a few visits to ATC Facilites in Cairo and heared that some new ATCs been sent to Paris and some of the old ones been in several visits to Belgium for training

Thanks in advance

I fly for Monarch and generally find Cairo Radar and the airfield approach controllers courteous and professional. Recently Cairo have become particularly helpful by readily providing weather information for destination and alternate airfields in the absence of a functioning Cairo volmet. There does appear to be a problem with consistent radio reception across the Cairo FIR. Some days it is good, other days appalling.
A few years ago I had an engine failure in the cruise when returning from Luxor. The response to the MAYDAY call was outstanding. Within a minute of the emergency call Cairo Radar had given us descent clearance and radar vectors for Cairo together with a precis of the Cairo weather. That incident has given me a lot of confidence in Egyptian controllers!

JAMMIR, I have just spent 3 weeks in Cairo during which time we installed a VOLMET system with audio feeds to eight locations around Egypt. It is a fully automatic system which they immediately put on air. I hope it gives you good service, sorry about the Australian voice but he is currently the best in the business, IMHO!

I was surprised to hear Cairo volmet recently.I don't think it has worked for years.Does it broadcast on a schedule, rather than on a loop? The local authorities need to publicise the volmet being operational and this would cut down a lot of the calls requesting weather.
The sectors seem to be very large with controllers covering the northern fir boundary all the way down to Luxor.Route clearances given are invariably flight plan route but this phraseology is not used.
Sharmelsheik would ease their arrival stream if they routed all their arrivals down the coast and into a left base rather than send us all over the significant lumps of granite!

Hi Tubby, almost as soon as we had the VOLMET equipment up and running they connected it to their transmitters. It is a fully automatic system broadcasting the same information from eight VHF sites around the country. They asked us to set it up for a five minute broadcast every ten minutes starting on the hour. They use local METARS and also METARS from the Vienna data base. It is on 126.2 if I recall correctly. I dont know why they did not want to do a continuous transmission.

If you are a regular operator into Egypt or better still if you are based in Egypt I would like to hear from you.

Hi SU-GCM, what I would like to know from someone living in Egypt is what facilities are available for flight briefing? For example can you get met and notam information online?

Also, is Telex still common in Egypt or has it been replaced by email?

Thanks.

I'll Answer you with the maximum knowledge I know untill I make sure of any one of the working ATCs

To get the MET info that would be only through the ATIS on each airport only HECA,Cairo Intl Currently have an ATIS all other airports don't have an ATIS but controllers Have to provide the latest weather observation for departing traffic before giving them the ATC Clearance

Email usage is increasing in Egypt for governmental conversations and related some are available on the AIP (PM Me if you need something from) But telex is also still there in use

Hope I helped by what I know though I don't think i did much

Regards and will be back with a more preicse answer from a real ATC

Cairo volmet was a surprise to me, i've been flying all over egypt for quite some time now and i came across it by accident when i was trying to tune in to Cairo ATIS on 122.6

The only airport with ATIS in Egypt is Cairo Int'l. Other than that it's either ATC or EgyptAir's Operations frequency which is only available to EgyptAir flights.

It's really great, always updated, and very clear voice with a resonable pace.

But the thing is only few know about it, it's not well publicized... even ATC, when a flight requests fresh weather for their destination within Cairo FIR they willingly transmit it on the active frequency rather than advising aircrafts to just tune in to Cairo volmet.

As for you question Jhon, if you have a subscription to Jeppesen - Transforming the Way the World Moves you will find it very useful. Also there is a very useful tool that came in handy many times, just send an sms to +454 060 6361 with the four letter identifier of any airport and they will sms you back with with the TAF and METAR.

Regards,

Thank you for your comments msr001.

I believe there is an intention to install ATIS at half a dozen or so airports in Egypt.

Cairo FIR etc

Hello,

This is an open request to anyone that can advise.

Can anyone send me a map of the FIR boundaries in the region of Cyprus-Israel-Egypt and if possible would also appreciate a route planning map of the same region........I appear to be unable to obtain from Cairo ATC....or where I can obtain this information on the internet?

I have been trying to ask the situation regarding West Bank and Gaza.....as everyone knows in regard to Gaza....they have a brand new international airport that was totally destroyed by the Israeli Military when they pulled out of Gaza.......the Israeli said unpon leaving that they would have nothing to do with Gaza anymore and yet they said that they would still control the sea aproach to Gaza and that they certainly would control the entire airspace over both locations.......they were condemned by ICAO an yet to this day they still maintain this embargo in and around the airspace.

Can anyone from the region explain to me exactly what the situation is...can anyone flight plan into Gaza say with a helicopter or will they be shot out of the sky......do anyone have an opinion on this situation because Gaza is now like a human prison and is now cut off from the rest of the world....I am looking at this from the humanitarian point of few.

Can anyone tell me exactly what are the FIR's in the area....can one for instance fly from Larnaca to Gaza airport....ie remain in Cyprus FIR and then adjacent to the Gaza coast fly directly into Gaza....one would assume that if the Israeli's have left Gaza to self rule then the airspace belongs to Gaza.....on the otherhand if the aircraft leaves Cyprus FIR and transit via Cairo FIR will they allow the aircraft to fly over the border into Gaza as I believe Cairo FIR covers Gaza........

Would appreciate any thoughts or comments especially from our Egyptian friends as to how they view Gaza?

Kind Regards
