I fly for Monarch and generally find Cairo Radar and the airfield approach controllers courteous and professional. Recently Cairo have become particularly helpful by readily providing weather information for destination and alternate airfields in the absence of a functioning Cairo volmet. There does appear to be a problem with consistent radio reception across the Cairo FIR. Some days it is good, other days appalling.
A few years ago I had an engine failure in the cruise when returning from Luxor. The response to the MAYDAY call was outstanding. Within a minute of the emergency call Cairo Radar had given us descent clearance and radar vectors for Cairo together with a precis of the Cairo weather. That incident has given me a lot of confidence in Egyptian controllers!
