What do you want from your new union and why exactly are you disaffected?

OK I'm 'dissafected' too, but I deliberately joined recently so as to have a say in matters. That was the intention anyway. Do I have a say; course not; all our needs are overruled by the bigger units who don't care about lower band units.
One unit one vote that's what I say.

Are there any more unions other than Prospect that represent ATCOs? At a recent recruitment presentaion by Prospect all we were told was that there are few other but "...............we are the main players".

I agree with 10D.
We were all in Unison, but after the possibility of being dragged out in support of the binmen we all joined Prospect.
Trouble then was that although the Employer was quite happy to recognise Prospect the other Unions opposed them joining the "table", and apparently the Law is on their side! Jury's still out.
Doesn't say much for Unison does it?

if you are that unhappy with the service speak to your Rep... if still not happy become a Rep!!

Or do you want the benefits but are not prepared to do the footwork??

The Reps do their best, and are unpaid for it - anyone who is that disgruntled should try to become one.

It's not a case of "prospect should do it all as we pay the dues"... to work effectively, Prospect need people on the shop floor.

There are quite a few people at our Band 2 unit that are only in Prospect for legal help if they stuff up.Prospect and Nats have completely shafted this unit over the last 15 years. However the traffic has rocketed since the Banding farce. We are getting traffic growth of over 15% per annum and another 5% looming in the winter schedules. That's before the huge increase in helicopter traffic. What do we get from Prospect and Nats.Nothing from Nats and junk mail from Prospect. Can't blame people for getting fed up with it.
PS Anotherthing,
Why do people always trundle out the ''Become a rep'' theme. We can't all be reps. The last time I looked we were only allowed 2.There is no way to improve the situation unless you're at a big unit, and start getting militant.Smaller units don't have a chance

Not sure what "legal help" you will get if you are negligent (i.e. mess up and weld two together) from the union.

If you are unhappy with the union let them know - and leave. Save yrself £15 per month and put it in an account marked "legal fund contingency" (or "Single ticket to Rio fund"!!)

We all have a choice.

I must admit that I had some concerns as to whether I'd get the right legal representation if I had a prang or my professional competence was called into question, so I joined GATCO.

I'm still a Prospect member and still believe they do a reasonable job for myself and my colleagues, but if it ever came down to the technical stuff, I know that GATCO would do as well as anyone could.

legal fund contingency

This is what is being proposed
Is it acceptable for a small unit say 30 staff of which only 8 are unuion members to be in a collective bargining set up.
Even if the Salary, loss of licence, roster change, sickness benifit issues were being addressed the 8 are paying( or not ) for a toothless institution whose only advice is to suggest industrial action, and that is really going to go down well.
IMHO get all the staff to put into a get out of jail fund

I’ll try to answer some of the points raised,
Firstly there is no intention to form a new union or to join another. If Prospect who in theory, have the expertise to represent ATC staff cannot satisfy the aspirations of its members then I would doubt any other union body could.
In past years IPMS (the supposed major player of the new Prospect union) was always considered to be the weaker of the civil service unions, hence the reason why so many smaller airfield managements would rather recognise Prospect, than say the T& G.
It has already been mentioned that the larger units carry more sway than the smaller units, multiply that to the power of 10 and you’ll have some understanding of how the few non state airfield members feel.
Anotherthing mentions get involved do the foot work etc, Been there done that, ultimately to no avail.
GATCO, possibilities when it comes to legal advice but as Alan m states if one F—k’s up absolutely no one can really help you ,That’s why we are Licensed so it can be taken away along with your freedom.
In my experience Prospect has under performed in every department .The full time staff are over stretched and under funded ,Cases are assessed on grounds of cost and not on justice for the members concerned .They promise much, ,as OWZ says a toothless institution whose only advice is to suggest industrial action,
Would withdrawing from the union solve anything, personally I doubt it, but at least the members would not be wasting their money

When has Prospect suggested 'industrial action'?, in fact a common criticism each pay round or WPP renegotiation is the lack of action, ie do we keep our powder dry or not. To answer the question posed, by being in the union you have access to professional legal advice, I personally know of one person being defended from the bullet by a QC brought into the case by Prospect.
No organisation is perfect, and given that the bulk of Prospect negotiations etc are done by our colleagues, in their own time, I don't agree at all that the union has underperformed. It is defending our corner from a very determined employer, who if it had it's way would have us all working significantly poorer working conditions than we currently have regardless of what unit/grade you are at. There are parts of current deals I don't like, in fact they disgust me eg AAVA's when on A/L, unit banding needs looking at, how will they be solved outside the 'union' arena?

GUESS WHAT NATS WE ALL DONT WORK FOR NATS!!!!!!
Its OK for the Nats masses to negotiate on a level playing field and the union take notice of your combined subscriptions , spare a thought for the rest of us. In my experience due to low numbers the union has no clout with the employer so as a last resort to try and justify subs comes out with the all out call.

Prospect hasn't called for industrial action, but IPCS/IPMS definitely did!
