A massive amount of the MAN traffic to Spain has fallen due to a number of reasons:

1. Merging TCX/MYT and TOM/FCA
2. XL are gone
3. Egypt and Turkey have surged and traffic has been more focused on these regions than ever. The airlines determine the market and flying 767s everyday out to these two countries especially will have contributed.

However, the drop is still not pleasant reading.

wheres IOM BLK in the analysis of sunshine route traffic:ok: its always sunny over here;)

Hey, someone likes us out there...

A Trip to the Fylde Riviera! - IgoUgo Blackpool Journal

Ernest Lanc's 31st October 2009 01:26

Might like us but is out of date, or the interview is Sandgrown.

Jet2.com - Alicante, Belfast, Faro, Geneva, Ibiza, Mahon, Malaga, Murcia, Palma and Tenerife.
Ibiza gone - Mahon gone - Jersey knitted in, what a good swap.

very quiet on the real BLK front - I get the odd email from the BLK info service to tell be what the bargain of the time is, but no news on anything exciting like a new route.

BOH

Any chance Jet2 would consider doing a weekend summer only (May-Oct) service to BOH? I think there is strong potential for the VFR, leisure market between the two 50/50 outbound/inbound

Prestonian 31st October 2009 09:43

Such a BOH offering would be great. Bournemouth is quite a popular resort for many in the NW but the 6 hour drive from central/N. Lancs or the Fylde is a real problem.

Sandgrown 1st November 2009 14:29

Sometime during this summer, the Glidepath went U/S.

It is still U/S.

3 Cheers...???? (Excuse my cynicism...)

Didn't LS offer MAN-BOH at one point? Quickly and quietly dropped, I seem to recall.

Sorry-please ignore-was BFS-BOH, thanks to subsequent posters. Old age...

BLK

I recall Man - Edi, Blk - Ams, but not Man - Boh. It does not mean there was not such a service though, but it does not spring to mind.

BKS Air Transport -sounds like you are thinking off BFS-BOH

I have been visiting Blackpool Airport for 40 years and remember travelling to the IOM in a BIA Handley Page Herald. In those days the old wooden airport terminal seemed to survive mainly on those flights. Today’s terminal might be now made out of cladding, rust and canvas but after paying my respects to the terminal last week nothing much seems to have changed. The day’s total movements seemed to be to Belfast via the IOM and one flight to Dublin.

I actually wonder how profitable the airports bread and butter route actually is, as I have lost count of how many airlines have failed flying out of Blackpool while heading across the Irish Sea.

One thing that does strike me is that the old terminal always seemed to be busier than the new terminal. The café with its views over the tarmac seemed to have a constant trade of customers while I note that the replacement café has shut down. I think that maybe in those days it was used as a café by the locals.

It can only be a matter of time before WH Smith closes as I have never seen anyone use it and it must be the company’s worst performing shop anywhere in the country.

So what of the future? To be honest I don’t think it is ever going to be successful airport and hit the mainstream. I guess that the airport has already lost around a quarter of its land over the years. More land will no doubt be sold off to keep the airport afloat but that can’t go on for ever. With housing set to be built at the end of the runway on the Pontins site the future does not look good for jet operations with the new locals complaining about noise.

Housing will soon be built ALONG the runway LTN, never mind at the end of it....

Geneva flight reduced

Just received following email from Jet2 re: Geneva flights I had booked next year

Schedule Change to Jet2.Com Flights LS741 and LS742 between Blackpool and Geneva operating on Saturdays only from 27th February and 27th March 2010 inclusive. We are advising you of this withdrawal of service.

Timetable on Jet2 website has not been changed yet to reflect this.

Ernest Lanc's 2nd November 2009 19:45

I see the BLK cynics rise again.

Sandgrown can you tell me: Has there been any planning permission granted to bululd houses on the old Pontings site?.

And IF that does happen, who is going to be stupid enough to buy property at the end of a runway?. Not just JET2 traffic is it?, there is constant traffic from BLK even is JET2 dissapeared.

Ernest Lanc's 2nd November 2009 19:52

I am not surprised with the JET2 cut on the Geneva route, I forecast it was not last like other routes like Amsterdam and Prague. BLK seems to perform best on the sunshine routes catering for property owners on the costas, and occasional sunshine holiday business like myself.

Bad time for airlines - I booked Malaga for end of July at £59 and £39 from BLK, and price has fallen to £59 and £29 on that date.

I also booked Lanzarote for May/June from Man, and that cost me less than Faro from BLK . Hard times.

It happens all the time. People buy houses on flight paths and then complain about aircraft nose. Blackpool would be no different.

What is different is how close new homes are proposed at Blackpool to the airport with no noise buffer zone.

You say it yourself LTN. Uncharted water buying residential property so CLOSE to a busy runway at times, with as you point out no noise buffer zone.

I doubt this would make a good selling point when such homes are advertised.

I asked is has any planning permission been granted yet, as that is no foregone conclusion I would not have thought.

Blackpool council are aware of the proximity of the noisy runway to the proposed homes, not counting the fact that they still have a small stake in BLK airport.

take-off 4th November 2009 08:49

Doesnt the airport come under Fylde council in terms of land (planning), wheareas Blackpool council WAS the owner, so any housing plans would go to fylde surely, with BLackpool council and now the new owners putting their '2penneth' in, Fylde council like many others have to find land to build all these new homes, I had heard previously that Blackpool council would object, as they are looking for gov't money to help regenerate the inner town areas , new housing etc... and not building houses on the old Pontins site would go some way to help .. who knows, at end of day would seems things are very quiet down at the airport, while Jet2 have been very good, their intrest lies elsewhere now, and BLK will only be a token base, sad times yes, but can only hope the airport can pull something else out of the bag. what that will be remains to be seen.

Well I hope the residents are charged a tenner every time they want to go home...
