More likely to be buying the land with a disused airport on it rather than buying an airport that has no traffic and has been making claimed losses.

Peel saying today they still have received no credible offer and they still don't know the identity of the buyers.

Nice flat site with close railway line. Great space for Shed building. Sorry I will be surprised if Peel sell to anybody who wants an airport.

I guess most military airfields that get sold off have an Overage clause for 20 years ? if Doncaster had one it would be expiring sometime soon?

All over bar the shouting, then. A case of Peel’s long term plan coming to fruition?

What happens to the large hangars such as the one NPAS built when the planes leave at the weekend? Do they get their money back?

Harold77 3rd Nov 2022 21:34

The large hangars will just be turned into warehouses, pretty simple.

The NPAS hangar is a new purpose built hangar only a couple of years old. So would expect compensation to be given.

NPAS in Dorset used to operate from an Industrial site, they did eventually move to BOH. The all weather capability improves with airport navigation aids. However a helicopter operation doesn’t necessarily need to be based at an airport. I would expect the NPAS operation to continue at the site.

NPAS Doncaster is all fixed wing!

Maybe not....

Ros Jones

Today as we see the last flights land at DSA, I understand that a significantly improved offer has been made to owners Peel from an international conglomerate after the first substantial offer was astonishingly turned down. I urge Peel to take this enhanced offer seriously and enter into a suitable process of due diligence which is a normal part of business dealings. I understand the monetary figures involved are well above the market value and present a very attractive investment offer. So why don’t Peel enter into serious negotiations with the prospective buyer? You have to ask yourself why don’t they want to sell? Perhaps Peel are speculating that there might be higher land values in the future whilst a critically important strategic piece of infrastructure gathers dust, jobs are lost and economic advantages are wasted.
We can’t let that happen and will use the legal remedies we have. So this week, Doncaster Council has secured a legal agreement from Peel that they will not formally close the airport before the end of November and have issued a claim for a judicial review of Peel’s decision to close DSA. This gives more than enough time for Peel to seriously enter into negotiations with the prospective buyer. Doncaster Council is also actively working on a Compulsory Purchase Order which will unfortunately not keep the airport open just now or retain the jobs sadly lost but will be the final legal step if a sale is not agreed. It is not too late for Peel to do the right thing and sell.

It will be turned into warehousing as the land and close rail link make it attractive for that purpose. The Rochdale Mafia aka Peel Holdings do have a certain amount of Form in doing this.

Cheers

I flew out with Wizz to Warsaw for a long weekend back in October just because I'd never have the chance to fly out of DSA again. The "Finningley Windmill" airside pub had already closed for good and some of the doors to the gates already had the gate numbers removed. It was fairly busy in first wave but would then sit empty for hours until the first TUI departures got back.

The only observation I would offer is that the totality of the Wizz and Thomson operations have been moved to nearby airports without much fuss whatsoever. That for me is a clue, the DSA experiment brought nothing that was really net new to the market, in later years it was all about fragmenting the existing market and grabbing a bigger share from competitors. I am a huge fan of competition but in this case, there was just not enough of any ROI.
The remaining bits and bobs have had to relocate across the country which leaves Vulcan XH558 in a very precarious place.

Whatevers happening, the price is going up.

Still don't understand how you can have a judicial review of Peels decision.

I feel the language has changed slightly in the last few days in regards to the statements from Ros Jones and Oliver Coppard, possibly due to some legal advice? Either way it’s seemingly becoming quite vague.

My suspicions are that DMBC are aware owing to the nature of the talks with bidders, there’s not an awful lot they can do. Clearly a lot of mistrust in Peel from them and general public, bit of pandering to that perhaps? Not sure whether DMBC have commissioned anybody to do a review of the airport independent of Peel assessment. Nor whether any actually assessment of regional economic GVA estimates of the site under other uses have been carried out. I feel it would be a bit irresponsible of DMBC/Oliver Coppard to not do that, so I suspect they know more than they’re letting on, after it’s good for nobody should it be left in a state of disrepair for years.

Id like to know what Ros Jones is using as a benchmark for ‘market value’, the airport as it is or the land that can be built on? If former then with the losses it can’t be worth all that much, surely, irrespective of the sunk capital? In which case Peel will inevitably be placing unrealistic targets for the offers. More positive is that Peel have alluded (in the leaked minutes from a staff meeting at DSA) that one of the interested bidders are also interested in the wider Gateway East development, if that could be incorporated into the airport operating company the could that subsidise any losses the airport continues to make? I’m naive to the legalities of such things.

Cabby 4th Nov 2022 15:56

BBC report and analysis - graph shows how the airport compares to others in the area for passenger numbers.

That’s all very well if there’s a grass verge!

From what I’ve seen and heard, the Doncaster aircraft always tended to use the full 2894 metres of tarmac….

I think I started the rumour about Gamston! ;) If they do, I’ll be sending my consultancy fee in.

Ive seen the same, and often questioned their choice of aircraft. On one engine you’re effectively a lawn mower apparently. Much better platforms out there in my opinion.
